3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to lamp shades and more particularly to a frame member construction for accommodating a socket having a threaded portion thereon.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple yet durable lamp shade frame which may be made inexpensively on a volume production basis for mounting on threaded sockets.
A feature of the invention resides in the provision of a single-edged element forming part of a combined socket holder and lamp shade mounting member, said edge accommodating a threaded portion of a socket so that it may be screwed upon said edge to a desired degree and removed therefrom as required, said edge being formed not only to accommodate a thread, but to hold the threaded socket firmly in a, desired position.
Another feature of the invention resides in the provision of a mounting member capable of supporting Wire elements on which a lamp shade cover and frame therefor is positioned, said member including an edge formed to accommodate a threaded outer wall of the socket.
Another feature covers the combination of a single sheet of metal in the form of a mounting member having an inner edge arranged to mount a threaded socket and a body portion supporting a plurality of frame members mounting a lamp shade.
These and other features will be more apparent from the following detailed description of one form of the invention to be read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a socket holder and mounting member for a lamp shade;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, in part in section, showing the inner edge formation of the member for accommodating a threaded socket and integral means for clamping a lamp shade frame member; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a lamp shade supported on the mounting member threaded upon a socket.
Considering the drawings, similar designations referring to similar parts, numeral 4 generally represents a lamp shade mounting member and socket holder having a body portion 5 preferably formed from a single piece of material. The material will preferably be of a suitable metal or alloy. The body portion 5 is in the form of an overlapping surface having an inner peripheral flat portion terminating in edge 6 with a pair of notches I therein. The inner edge is shaped to follow a spiral course so that the body member 5 may be threaded upon a socket or the like having a corresponding threaded body part on which the edge 6 may be screwed. The notched formation, it will be observed, not only permits the inner edge to follow a, threaded surface, as on the outside of a socket, but will hold the body portion firmly in position when the edge approaches the end of a thread, at which point the edge can proceed no further and will flex slightly when pulled up to assume a secure position. By slight pressure in a clockwise direction, when the end of the threaded path is reached, the mounting member 4 will be tightly screwed in place due to the tendency of the edge 6 to move sidewise and bind with respect to the thread on which it is positioned.
The side 8 of the mounting member is integral with and a continuation of the top as shown in Fig. 1. Thus, strength is retained although the member may be formed from a single piece of material.
In order to mount a lamp shade, a plurality of spokes 9 are positioned on the mounting member. The spokes fit within orifices ill in the side overlapping portion 8 of the body 5. Tabs ll, comprising segments of portion 8 at the outer peripheral edge below the orifices, are clamped against the spokes fitting within the orifices, rigidly holding the spokes in place as shown in Fig. 2. Any desired number of spokes, spaced as shown for example in Fig. 3', may be supported on member 5, and the spokes in turn support a frame l2 on which a lamp shade I3 is positioned in the usual manner.
In practice the body portion is stamped with the inner edge formed to be threaded on a socket, such as It of Fig. 3. The orifices are put into the side 8. The spokes are then inserted therein. Tabs H are clamped down upon the spoke ends fitting within the orifices. The lamp shade frame is then attached to the spokes and the parchment or other shade material wrapped about the frame. The complete assembly may thereupon be threaded upon a threaded socket and when in uppermost position is firmly fixed due to the flexing of inner edge 6 upon the thread as hereinbefore described. By rotation in counterclockwise direction, it may easily be unthreaded and removed from the socket.
Since various modifications may be made, it is intended that no limitations apply to the invention other than those specified in the appended claims.
I claim: 1. A lamp shade frame including a combined 3 socket holder and lamp shade mounting member, said socket holder and lamp shade mounting member having an inside edge shaped to follow a spiral course, said edge having a plurality of notches therein, the outside edge of said member having a plurality of orifices therein adapted to receive frame supportingspokes, frame supportingspokes disposedin said orifices and radiating outwardly from said member, and a plurality of tabs formed in said member clamping 1 said spokes in place in the assembly.
