3 Claims.
This invention relates to goggles and more particularly to novel ventilation means for the eyecups of such goggles.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide goggles adapted particularly for use by welders, furnace workers or the like with ventilation means which will prevent dirt, dust, etc., as well as injurious light rays from reaching the eyes of the wearer.
Another object is to provide goggle eyecups of the type having openings formed in the temporal side walls of the eyecups and having a perforated screen thereover in combination with a baffle internally of said eyecups and having channel portions correlated with the inner walls of the eyecups so as to direct air from the perforated screen in the temporal sides of the eyecups inwardly of the goggle through openings formed in said inner bafile plates adjacent the nasal sides of the eyecups with the said inner baffle simultaneously functioning to prevent particles which might traverse the perforated screen rom reaching the eyes of the wearer and also for shunting light which might pass through said perforated screen to the eyes.
Another object is to provide an inner baffle plate of the character described which will be supported in assembled relation with the eyecups by clamping the lenses in position in said eyecups.
Another object is to provide an inner bafile plate of the character described shaped to blend with the face engaging portion of the eyecups in such a manner as to remove any sharp edges which might have a tendency to cut into the flesh and injure the wearer.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and it will be apparent that many changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the accompanying claims. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described as the preferred forms only have been given by way of illustration.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken as on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a slightly enlarged sectional view taken as on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the inner bafiie member.
The invention is directed particularly to the provision of ventilation means for goggles of the type adapted particularly for use by welders, foundry workers, furnace workers and the like who are continually subjected to flying particles and to relatively intense heat and injurious light rays such as are encountered in acetylene or arc welding or in furnaces.
The invention is directed particularly to providing means for adequately ventilating the goggles so as to avoid discomfort to the wearer and simultaneously protect the eyes from flying particles and from injurious light rays.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, the device embodying the invention comprises a pair of eyecups 5 each having a face engaging edge portion 6 shaped to the general contour shape of the face about the eyes. The said eyecups 5 'are preferably formed of non-metallic heat resisting material and more particularly of material which will not readily conduct heat. The said eyecups are each provided with a forward threaded portion I to which a lens retaining ring 8 is threadedly connected as shown best in Fig, 2. The said lens retaining ring 8 is provided with an inwardly extending flange portion 9 adapted to overlie the lenses Ill. The said eyecups, on the temporal sides thereof, have a side wall portion cut away to form a relatively large opening I I therein surrounded by a shouldered seat I2. The shouldered seat I2 is adapted to receive acover plate I3 having a plurality of vent openings I4 therein. The cover plate I 3 is curved substantially to the outer contour shape of the eyecups and is secured thereto by rivets or the like IS. The said cover plate I3 is provided with an integral tongue portion l6 having a slot therein for receiving the headband The opening I I extends throughout a relatively large area in the side of the eyecups to afford ample passage of air inwardly of the eyecups through the vent openings I4.
A baffle plate I8 is positioned internally of the eyecups and is provided with a peripheral flange I9 adapted to overlie the forward lens retaining edge of the eyecups in between the lenses I0 and the inner flange 9 of the lens retaining ring 8. The baffle plate I8 is in the form of a cylindrical member shaped to extend substantially throughout the entire area of the inner walls of the eyecups and is provided with a rear edge portion 20 shaped substantially to the contour shape of the face engaging edge portion 6 of the eyecups. The said edge portion 20 is flared outwardly slightly, as shown best at the location 2| in Fig. 2,, to. intimately fit with the surfaces of the inner walls of the eyecups throughout the inner contour of said eyecups. The said inner baflie I8 is provided with spaced wall portions 22 which are bent inwardly to provide inner channel members 23 spaced from the inner adjacent walls of the eyecups so as to permit the passage of air inwardly of said channels as indicated diagrammatically by the arrows 24, Fig. 3. The said channel portions 23, adjacent the nasal ends thereof, are provided with relatively large vent opening 25 whereby the air entering the channels through the vent openings [4 may pass inwardly of the eyecups adjacent the nasal side thereof as indicated diagrammatically by the arrows 26. The inner baffle I8 is preferably divided on the nasal side thereof as illustrated at 21 and has its wall portions 28 on the opposed sides of the line of division in relatively intimate contact with the inner surface of the eyecups on the nasal side thereof whereby the flow of air beyond the inner ends of the channel portions 23 will be restricted. The nasal side of the inner balile plate i8 is provided with an opening 29 through which an eyelet 30 is adapted to extend. The eyelet 30, as shown in Fig. 3, is adapted to receive one end of a flexible chain-like bridge member 3| which isv extended therethrough and which is locked in place by a clamp member 32 pivoted to the inner wall of the eyecups as illustrated at 33.
The baffle plate [8 is provided with an imperforate portion 34 on the temporal side of the eyecups lying in the rear of the cover plate I3 shaped to extend in substantially parallel relation with the curve of the cover plate I3 and to. fit relatively intimately with the inner walls of the eyecups adjacent the front and rear sides of the opening I l. The flexible chain-like bridge 3| is preferably covered by a tubular member of'heat resisting material 35.
It is particularly pointed out that the outwardly flared portion 2| has its edge surface en gaging the inner surface of the eyecups adjacent the face contacting edge 6 so as to cause the outer wall of said edge portion 2| to lie substantially flush with the adjacent surface of the edge portion 6- thereby removing any sharp edge which might engage and cut into the'flesh of the face of -thewearer.
The inner baffie I8 is so dimensioned as to fit intimately with the inner wall of the eyecups and may be so formed as to have an initial circumferential dimension slightly larger than the circumferential dimension of the interior of the eyecups and thereby depending upon the slotted portion 27 to permit the said baflie to be forced intointimate relation with the internal wall of the eyecups and to be held in said relation by the flange I 9 clampingly gripped between the lenses and. the adjacent edge of the eyecups.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that, simple, eflicient and economical means have beenv provdied for accomplishing all of the ob- .jects and advantagesof the invention.
Having described my invention, I claim:
