J. S. LAMAR. Device for Converting Motion.

r a MAW &ATT0RNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. LAMAR, OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
DEVICE FOR CONVERTING MOTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,005, dated May 24, 1881. Application filed December 27, [879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs S. LAMAR, of Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Devices for Converting Motion and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description-of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the'drawin gs is a representation of a top view of my improved device for con vertin g motion. Fig. 2is a side elevation thereof, and Figs. 3 anti 4 are sectional details.
This invention has relation to an improvement upon my device for converting motion for which Letters Patent were granted to me August 26, 1879, No. 218,887; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangements of parts, as hereinafter shown, described, and set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the frame-work or supports for the mechanism.
B is the piston and its elongated yoke, the latter being connected to the pulleys D D by means of belts, bands, or ropes of wire, as shown. The pulleys D D, being of equal diameter, are seated on the shaft, and revolve freely thereon by means of suitable hearings in the frame A. Both pulleys are provided with broad projecting rims b, having smooth under faces 0 of the same width, which extend to thecentral portion of the rims b.
Between the pulleys on the shaft ais rigidly secured an intermediate collar, E, which is provided on each side with a set of pivoted friction-clutches, (1 (1 01 which extend outwardly to the smooth inner laces, c, ofthe rims b of the pulleys. These arms or clutches d d d are of the same length and are slightly inclined from the radial lines of the wheel, and have their lower ends forward of their outer ends, the latter being pressed against the smooth inner faces, 0, by springs s, which are also attached by means of slots formedin the collar E in rear of said arms or clutches.
H is a driving-wheel keyed on the shaft a, which also bears the fast collar E and loose pulleys D D.
As the clutches d d 01 make with the rims each a small angle, it is evident that they will freely yield to the pulleys when the direction of their motion is such as tends to enlarge this angle of contact, and will firmly engage with said pulleys when these move in the opposite direction. In this manner it is designed to obtain a prompt and instantaneous engagement between the alternating pulleys and the clutches, to secure smooth and steady motion, and avoid unnecessary noise in the operation of the engaging parts.
I am aware ofthe construction shown in Patent No. 37,806, and would not, therefore, be understood as laying any claim to the same.
I am aware that a device for converting motion consisting of a fixed shaft and a loose flywheel having an elongated hub, each affording hearings to pulleys of unequal diameters, and pawls of unequal length, pivoted to the hub of the fly-wheel and bearing against the rims of said pulleys, is not new, and I do not,
claim such devices; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the rectilinear reciprocating piston B and its elongated yoke with the transverse shaft a, rotating in suitable bearings in the frame A, between the ends of said yoke, and having the pulleys D D, of equal diameter, secured directly thereon, said pulleys being provided with projecting rims b, having smooth under surfaces 0, and the intermediate collar E, rigidly secured to said shaft between the pulleys, and bearing against and separating said pulleys, and carrying friction-clutches (l d (1 of equal length, which engage the faces 0 of said rims respectively at alternate movementsof the piston and yoke, turning the shaft and its rigidly-attached fly-wheel H, the Whole constructed and arranged to operate as shown and described. a
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. LAMAR.
