UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT D. HAINES, OF OORNING, NEW YORK.
TOOL FOR HOLDING GLASSWARE WHILE FINISHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,976, dated May 24, 1881,
Application filed April 5, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT D. HAINES, of Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tool for Holding Glassware whileFinishing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and readily adjustable instrument for holding hollow glassware during the processes of finishing the same; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a view of the implement, partly in section, showing the manner of applying it to a lamp-chimney. Fig. 2 is a top-plan view; and Fig. 3 is a verticalele vation, showing the position of the adjustable arms before introducing them within a hollow cylindrical body.
A represents a tube, which is enlarged at its lower end to form a chamber, A. The upper end of this tube is screw-threaded at a, and supports a disk or plate, B, that is adjustable upon the threads at by means of its collar 12.
Within the tube A is a stem, 0, which is somewhat longer than the tube, so as to project at each end. The lower end of the stem 0 is provided with a handle, 0. A spring, 0, is coiled around the stem 0 and rests within the chamber A, so that one end bears against a shoulder, a, at the upper end of the chamber, and the other end bears against a shoulder, 0, on the stem.
To the upper screw-threaded portion of the tube A, above the disk B and bearing against the same, is attached a nut orcollar, D, which is provided with lugs d d, preferably arranged in three pairs around the collar. Between these lugs are pivoted the jointed arms E E,
which are each formed in two sections, the upper sections being pivoted to lugsf f on a collar, F, that is attached to the upper screwthreaded end, b, of the stem 0.
The arms E E are each jointed at e in such a manner that pressure upon the end of the handle 0, by forcing the stem 0 upward through the tube A, will bring the arms into a nearly straight or vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3, so .that the implement can be readily introduced into a small opening. As soon as the pressure upon the handle is relieved the tension of the spring 0, bearing against the shoulder c, forces the stem downward and throws the jointed arms E into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that they will bear against the interior of the vessel or cylinder into which they may have been introduced. By turning the handle 0 the threaded end 12 ot' the stem 0, engaging with the threaded interior ot' the collar F, will vary the tension of the arms E, so that they may be made to bear with greater or less force upon the object, and so hold it with the requisite degree of firmness.
It will be observed that the plate B and collar D are adjustable upon the tube A, so as to form a firm support for the object.
The implement is constructed of any suitable metal, the arms E being of any desired size or form to adapt them to the shape of the article to be held, and are readily adjustable to different sizes.
By the use of this implement the workman can observe the entire outline of the article he is at work upon, owing to the devices being attached within the glass, which also protects them to some extent from the injurious efl'ects of heat.
The various parts of the implement are detachable, and may be readily replaced when necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In animplement for holding glass articles while being finished, the combination of a tube provided with a supporting-plate, a spring-actuated stem, and adjustable jointed arms pivoted t0 collars on the stem and tube in such a In testimony that I claim the foregoing as manner as to bear against the interior of the my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in object and hold the same firmly, substantially presence of two witnesses.
as specified.
