ARIATURE IOUNTING FOR CARBON PILE VOLTAGE REGULATORS Filed Feb. 28, 1944 IN1/ mmm BY Gal-men ML2/@mn Patented Apr. 22, 1947 ARMATURE MOUNTING FOR CARBON PILE VOLTAGE REGULATORS John Gartner, Hasbrouck Heights, N. J., assignor to Bendix Aviation Corporation, Teterboro, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application February 28,1944, Serial No. 524,236
6 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to voltage reguy lators of the carbon pile type, and is concerned primarily' with the novel mounting for the armature in the assembly.
A carbon pile voltage regulator ordinarily includes a so-called magnetic pot, which has assembled therewith a movable armature that is affected by variations in the strength of the magnetic field generated by the magnetic pot to vary the pressure on the carbon pile. vHeretofore it has been the practice to mount this armature` on a leaf spring assembly which is intended to accommodate and compensate for movement of the armature under the influence of the magnetic iield. However, various diiiiculties have attended this known practice and it is the purpose of the present invention to obviate such diiilculties.
Accordingly, an important object in viewis the provision of the carbon pile regulator, including an armature that is mounted on a flexible diaphragm. In carrying out this idea, the flexible diaphragm is mounted on the top flange now present in magnetic pots of conventional design, and the armature is carried on the under face of this diaphragm.
In view of the need for supplying a yieldable force which will oppose themagnetic influence of the pot, a further object is the provision, in a carbon pile voltage regulator, of a pot, including a core which carries such yieldable means.
More in detail, an end in view is the provision of ka core, including a plunger that engages the armature together with spring means for actuating the plunger. Associated with the spring means is a thermostatic device that is responsive to changes in temperautre to vary the effective force of the spring.
In view of the tendency of the armature to vibrate the invention has, as a further object, the provision of means for dampening vibration of the armature. This end is achieved by the mounting of the diaphragm which provides an air chamber therebeneath. The air chamber is sealed by a gasket which may be placed around the top of the core in the magnetic pot. This air chamber functions to yieldably oppose movement of the armature and diaphragm in either direction.
Various other more detailed objects and advantages o1' the invention such as arise in connection with carrying out the above noted thoughts in a practical embodiment will in part become apparent and in part be hereinafter stated.
'I'he invention, therefore, comprises a magnetic pot for a carbon pile voltage regulator, which has mounted thereon a diaphragm carryin g an armature. The pot includes a core on which is operatively mounted a plunger, together with a spring and a thermostatic device for varying the effective pressure of said spring.
`For a full and more complete understanding voi theinvention, reference may be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a, perspective view of the magnetic pot g of a voltage regulator on which an armature is mounted in accordance with the precepts of this invention; e
Fig. 2 is a section through the mechanism of Fig. l; and Q Fig. 3` is a. perspective view developing the various elements in exploded relation.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts. and rst more particularly to Figs. l and 2, a magnetic pot, such as ordinarily included in carbon pile voltage regulators, is referred to in its entirety by the reference character P, 'I'he pot P comprises a bottom I0 on which upstands a cylindrical wall I I, which in turn carries a top I2 that is surrounded by a lipiiange I3. A coil, such as shown at I4 in Fig. 1, is positioned inthe pot P and includes lead wires I5 that pass out through a slot I6 formed in the Cylindrical wall II.
'I'he bottom wall I0 is formed with a threaded opening I1 and screwed thereinto is a, core I8, the lower threaded extremity of which projects beneath the bottom I0. A nut I9 may be employed to lock the core in the required position.
The top l2 is formed with a central opening 20, which may assume the conical formation illustrated, and into which projects the upper end of the core I8.
A diaphragm 2| has its outer peripheral edge anchored to theiiange I8, as by fastening elements shown at 22. The upper face of the diaphragm 2| may carry a carbon pile engaging member 23. The under face of the diaphragm 2| carries a disc-like armature 24, there being an insulating disc 25 interposed between the armature 24 and diaphragm 2|. Screws, such as shown at 26, may be employed to secure the armature 24 and insulating disc 25 to the diaphragm 2 I.
In the showing of Fig. 2, it is evident that the ,armature 25 is ordinarily maintained in a position slightly spaced above the top I2 and more particularly immediately over the opening 20.
The core I8 is provided with a bore 21 that extends up thereinto from the bottom to the head of the core. This head is formed with an opening 28, as is more clearly shown in Fig. 3. Fitted in the opening 28 is a plunger 29, having a cup shaped head 30. One end of an expansion spring 3I is received in the cup shaped head 30, while the other end of spring 3I abuts the uppermost of a plurality of thermostatic discs 32. It will be noted that the discs 32 are of convex-concave formation, with the discs of each pair arranged in opposite position. The lower portion of the bore 2'! is threaded, and screwed thereinto is a screw plug 33 upon which rests the lowermost of the discs 32.
When the mechanism is originally assembled, the core I8 is screwed into the opening I1 a proper distance and locked in this position by the nut I9. 'Ihe screw plug 33 may then be adjusted to place the spring 3I under a required degree of compression. In this position, the pin 29 will abut the under face of the armature 24.
As the magnetic influence of the core I8 varies in accordance with variations in the voltage of the coil I4, the armature 24 is affected and through the medium of the member 23 the pressure on the carbon pile is correspondingly varied. Should the armature be pulled downwardly, such movement is resisted by the spring 3I. Any temperature changes are adequately accommodated by the thermostatic discs 32.
It is evident that if the space defined by the flange I3, diaphragm 2|, and top I2 is sealed off an air chamber will be provided beneath the diaphragm 2|. Accordingly a gasket 34 is placed about the top of the core I8, and this gasket has lips that enclose the edge of the opening in the top I2. An air-tight seal is thus provided and air chamber 35 is established. This chamber 35 acts as a dampener to resist and inhibit vibrations of the armature 24.
While only one embodiment of the invention is hereinbefore set forth, it is to be clearly understood that the invention is not to be limited to the exact construction illustrated and described, because various modifications of these details may be provided in putting the invention into practice withln the purview of the appended claims.
