GRAlN-CAR-DOOR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,923, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed February 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON BURNTRAGER, of Mulberry, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Grain Oar Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
None of the grain-car-door fasteners in common use fully meet the requirements for a perfect fastener, all of them failing to draw and hold the door against the door-frame sufficiently tight to prevent some leaking of grain and most of them becoming less efi'ective from continued use.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple fastener that is free from these objections, being strong and durable and always making tightjoints between the door and its jambs.
The invention consists of vertically and laterally swinging bevel-edged metal cams, that are pivoted near the edges of the outer side of the door on inclined or wedge-shaped metal blocks, so that the said cams may be turned down laterally on a suitable inclination against beveled door-jambs, which also constitutea part of the invention, and thereby hold the door close fitting and securely.

B represents the false jambs, made of an gleiron or other metal, and having their opposite faces on the inner sides of the door-jambs A beveled or inclined from within outward, as shown at a.
C 0 represent the wedge-shaped blocks, each of which has on one face a projection, b, on which a cam, D, is pivoted, and on the opposite face two projecting lugs, c, which latter are designed to enter corresponding inclined sockets, d, in the door E, in order to steady said blocks 0 in position. 7
On the inside of the door E are secured vertical panels or braces E, for strengthening the same.

The blocks 0 0 being placed in position with their lugs c in the sockets d of the door E, and their thin edges in close proximity to the false jambs B, the cams D are set over and upon the sleeves I), and held in place by bolts F, that are passed diagonally through sleeve 0, block 0, door E, panel E, and a wedge-shaped washer, G, which latter is on theinner face of the panel E, and by nuts F that are screwed on the ends of said bolts F. The headsfotthe bolts F are of large diameter, so as to extend circumferen tiall y from the sleeves I) over the cams D, and thereby hold thelatter in place. These cams D have their semicircular or rounded edges beveled, as shown at g, to correspond with the bevel of the false jambs B, so that when turned and forced down against the bevel of the false jambs B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said cams D will draw the door E outward and hold it firmly against the outer faces of saidjambs B. By striking up the cams D the said door E is loosened, and can then be pried up for the removal of the grain from the car by inserting the end of a bar under one of the steps h of the block H, which is fixed centrally at the lower edge of the door E, on the outside thereof, a suitable fulcrum being placed in position for the prying-bar.
It will be seen that the false jambs B and beveled edges of the cams D form opposite inclined planes, that will continue to bear the same relation to each other and together operate to hold the door tightly closed, however great may be the wear on them.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the car-door E and door-jambs A B, of the wedge-shaped blocks 0, beveled cams D, and bolts and nuts F F, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A grain-car-door fastener constructed, substantially as herein shown and described, with wedge-shaped blocks 0, beveled cams D, and bolts and nuts F F, arranged and operated as set forth.
3. The combination, with the car-door E, having sockets d, of the wedge-shaped blocks 0, provided withlugs c, beveled cams D, wedgeshaped washers G, and bolts and nuts F F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
