This invention relates to cymbal beating devices.

Broadly, it is an object of my invention to provide a beat upon one of the cymbals, the other cymbal descending immediately after this beat providing another beat.

Another object of my invention is to provide an extra beater permittin the drummer further to free his hands for use for other instruments, such as a snare drum, Vibraphone and traps.

Another object is to obtain variou types of beats not obtainable by the foot pedal of the cymbal devices heretofore used.

Another object is to provide an improvement in the usual foot-operated cymbal device wherein both the toe and the heel of the same foot canbe used alternately to actuate the device in or der to provide extra beats not ordinarily obtainable.

A further object is to provide a series of simple linkages. in order to make an economical improvement in the well-known cymbal devices presently used by drummers.

A further object is to provide an adjustable tensioning device to relieve any undue muscular strain upon the foot during the continual movement of the foot in creating beats, and to control the rapidity of return to its original position.

A further object is to provide a device wherein the drum or beating stick may be removable and interchangeable to suit the preferences and desires of the drummer.

Another object is to provide a heel rest immediately adjacent the heel rest directly behind the toe rest of devices heretofore used so that the heel and toe of the same foot can be readily moved into the proper position for alternating action of the cymbals and drum or beater stick.

Another object is to provide an attachment for cymbal beating whereby said attachment may or may not be used, depending upon the effect desired by the drummer. When the heel rest of the attachment is not needed for use, it is so positioned that it will not interfere with the re turn of the foot to the foot pedal on the existing cymbal devices.

My device could be readily adapted to any existing type of foot cymbal beater now on the mar ket without changing the nature and character of the invention. Thus, parts which are stationary to one another may be firmly afiixed by welding, or made from the original stock, or can be made as an attachment, as shown on the drawlugs, so that the attachment could be applied to existing cymbal devices heretofore used by drummers.

Another object is to provide a device for cymbal beating that could be made of any desired height.

Another object of my invention is to provide cooperating parts in such a manner, that the stroke of the drum stick or beater can be adjusted angularly, horizontally and vertically and the length of the stroke may also be adjusted at the desire of the drummer.

If the drummer changes the diameter of his cymbals, the angular displacement of the stick can be adjusted.

Another object is to have the heel attachment independently controllable from the toe pedal of the present device.

For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of my invention, reference is had to the drawings in which:

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the cymbal beating device with part of the housing for some of the linkages partly broken away.

Fig. 2 is a section taken through line 2--2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a top view of the foot pedal unit.

Fig. 4 is a section taken through line 44 of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, numeral I0 represents a tubular post at the bottom of which a frame II is attached to a clamp l2, by means of a pivot l3 so that frame ll may be folded upward for carrying purposes. A foot pedal [4 is attached to frame l l by pivot pin IS. The upper portion of foot pedal I4 is attached to an eyelet I (5 by a link [1; the eyelet I6 being attached to a central vertically movable rod l8. Central rod l8 rests upon a spring I9 at the bottom and within the tubular post l0. At the upper portion of post I!) a lower cymbal 20 is positioned. An upper cymbal 2! is attached to the rod I8. By pressing foot pedal 14 the rod I8 is lowered vertically against pressure of spring I9 causing the two cymbals to strike together.

A. lever 22 terminating in a heel plate 23 is attached to supports 24 and 25 by pivot pin 26. Support 24 is removably attached to frame H by U-shaped clips 2? and 28, and support 25 is also removably attached to frame I l by U-shaped clips 29 and 3s. The opposite end of lever .22 is attached to rod 3| by pivot p n 32 which is adjustable in slot 33 of lever 22. The upper end of rod 3! is attached to lever 34 by pivot pin 35. Rod 3| is adjustable by coupling 36. Lever 34 is 5 attached to the back plate 31 by pivot pin 38.

The opposite end of lever 34 is attached to link 39 by pivot pin 40. A stop 41 is provided for lever 34 and an adjustabl spring 42 returns lever 34 to its uppermost position. Link 39 is attached to clamp 43 by pivot pin 44. Clamp 45 is attached to arm 46 at fulcrum 4'1; arm 45 being adjustable by wing nut 43 so that the position of stick 49, held in

3 and 45, can be varied. Back plate 3? is attached to post I!) by clamp 50. A cover Si is provided for back plate 31,

In order to operate the cymbal beater, the sole of one foot is placed upon foot pedal M, the heel acting as a fulcrum. By pressing the sole of the foot down, cymbals 2i and 2! strike one another. By pressing the heel of the foot upon heel plate 23 and using the sole as a fulcrum, stick 49 will strike the lower cymbal 20, and by then using the heel as a fulcrum and releasing the pressure of the sole against the tension of pring ill to any degree desired by the drummer, the degree of pressure of the upper cymbal upon the lower cymbal gives a. controllable inuffling or damping sound effect and controls the transfer of vibration between cymbals Z0 and 2|.

The heel of the foot can be readily moved from the heel plate 23 to the heel rest 52 of frame 1! in order to obtain different combinations of sound efiects.

It is obvious that various changes and modifications rnay be mad in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention,

I claim:

1. In a cymbal beating device of the character described, having a stick and two cymbals, a pivoted heel plate for causing said stick to strike one of said cymbals, spring means for automatically returning said stick to its original position and a. sole and heel rest for controlling the movement of the other of said cymbals.

2. In a cymbal heating device of the character described, having a stick and two cymbals,

pivoted heel plate to control the stick for striking one of said cymbals and a ivoted sole and heel rest for controlling the degree of pressure one cymbal upon the other whereby a controlled transfer oi": vibration or a damping effect is obtained.

3. In a cymbal beating device of the character described, having a stick and two cymbals, a pivoted heel rest movable downward against spring pressure, said heel rest through linkages controlling the pivoted movement of said stick to strike on of said cymbals, a pivoted heel and sole plate for causing movement against spring pressure to control the movement of the other of said cymbals relative to said first mentioned cymbal.

4. In a cymbal beating device of the character described, including a stick, two cymbals and a movable heel rest, means to pivotally secure said heel rest adjacent a movable sole rest, said stick pivotally mounted upon a support, said stick being linked by a series of linkages to said heel rest, whereby when presstue is applied to said heel rest said stick through its linkages will be caused to strike one of said cymbals.

5. In a cymbal beating device of character described, having a stick, two cymbals, a sole rest and a heel rest, said sole rest actuating said upper cymbal against spring pressure, said stizk pivotally mounted upon supports, one end of said stick being linked by a series of linkages to said heel rest whereby upon pressure upon said heel rest, said stick will be caused to strike one of said cymbals.

6. In a cymbal heating device of the character described, having a stick and an upper and lower cymbal, a foot pedal being linked to means for rais ng and lowering the upper of said cymbals, a heel rest adjacent to said foot pedal to cause said stick to strike said lower cymbal, said stick in close proximity to the lower cymbal, linkages between said stick and said heel rest, means for adjusting the movement of said stick whereby upon pressure upon said foot pedal. and said heel. rest said stick will be caused to strike one of said cymbals, and one of said cymbals will be caused to strike the other 01 said cymbals.
