UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS DOWDALL AND JOHN M. FENNER'IY, OF VIOKSBURG, MISS.
VENTILATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,794, dated May 24, 1881.
Application tiled March 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS DowDALI. and JOHN M. FENNERTY, ot Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State ot' Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvemonts in ventilators; and we do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifica-tion.
Figure l is a vertical section al view, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s in both figures.
This invention relates to an improved ventilator, the construction and operation of which will be hereinafter more fully shown and described, and particularly pointed ont in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the base of our improved ventilator, which consists of a concavo-convex disk, capable of being secured, in any suitable manner, in the roof or ceiling ot' a room or apartment.
B is a pipe or tube extending upward from the base A and extending above the root', where it is provided at some distance below its top or upper end with an annular flange or collar, C.
D is a tube, swiveled or journaled upon tube B, and having a flange, E, by which it rests upon the annular collar C, which forms a turn-table for the upper section ot' the ventilator. The tube D is provided with a conical deiiector,F, connectedby rods Gr, with a ring, H, adjusted upon the tube B-below the ange or turn-table O, so as to prevent displacement of the upper section of the ventilator.
Secured horizontally to the upper end of the vertical swiveled tube D is a tube, I, provided at one end with a funnel, J, and at the other (No model.)
with a pair of wings or vanes, K. The latter serve to keep the funnel in the wind, and also to balance it, thus causing the device to operate very easily. When a current of air enters the funnel J it passes through the tube I and over the tubes D B, in which a strong upward draft is thus created, the effect ot' which is to carry off the foul and impure air from the room or apartment with which the ventilator is connected. The inclined sides ot' the funnel prevent the admission through the ventilator of any rain-water or other moisture into the apartment. Smoke is also prevented from entering through the ventilator, inasmuch as the current merely passes through the funnel J and tube I and over the tubes D B, in which suction is thus created to carry oft' foul air.
The dellector F, when arranged as shown, will prevent air and rain from entering through the turn-table joint.
This invention is simple, inexpensive, easily applied or pnt in position, and it is automatic and effective in its operation.
Having thus descrlbed our invention, We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in ventilators, the combination, with the base A, having tube B, provided with flange or collar C, of the swiveled tube D, having dan ge E, detlectorF, ring H, and horizontal tube I, provided with the funnel J and wings or vanes K, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as ourYown we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
