UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARION BARNUM, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
SAD-IRON HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,777, dated May 24:, 1881.
Application filed September 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION BARNUM, of Elmira, Ohemung county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing and Sad Iron Holders, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to holders for polishing and sad irons, and the object of the same is to produce an iron-holder of simple construction, which maybe readily applied to the handle of the iron, to afiord a means for applying a heavy pressure with ease to the operator.
The holder consists of a bar of wood or other non-conducting material and a clamp of the construction hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specifi cation, Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing myimproved holderapplied to aniron; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. a
A represents a bar of wood or other material, provided withrouuded handles a a, and recessed to form a socket, a, for the iron-handle B of the sad-iron X. At the center of said bar A is a clamp consisting of a plate having a vertical'side, c, and horizontal lips cl (1 and a thumb-screw, O. This clamp is secured to the holder Aby a transverse bolt, D, which passes through a vertical slot, 0, in the clamp through the holder, and is secured by a nut, e. .The
(No model.)
thumb-screw 0 turns in the lip d of the clamp, and serves to adjust the latter vertically, and thereby gripe the handle B of the iron between the lip Z and the bar or release it. The bar or holder A is applied to the handle of the iron after lowering the clamp, to permit the lip 01 to extend under the handle B. The latter is then between the arm d and the holder A. The thumbscrew O is then turned to clamp the handle B, when the holder will be practically part of the iron and will afford means for grasping' the same with both hands, so that a heavy pressure can be applied with ease to the operator.
The holder may be removed by turning the thumb-screw to loosen the clamp.
1 claim- As a new article of manufacture, a holder consisting of the bar A and clamp O, bolted to said bar, and a device for adjusting the clamp, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARION BARNUM.
