Application October 6, 1944, Serial No. 557,466
1 Claim. l
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for phonographs for cleaning the records during the playing thereof, and the invention has for its primary object to provide an attachment of this character including a pivoted wiper arm having a wiper blade pivotally mounted at the end thereof and overlying the record in gravitating engagement therewith to eifectively clean the surface of the record from dust and dirt whereby to improve the playing of the phonograph.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character of simple and vpractical construction, which is ecient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and install in operative position and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in thedetails of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein likenumerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the oppo site side of the cleaning attachment.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on a line 4-11 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on aline 5-5 of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on a line 6--6 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates an attaching plate adapted for attaching on top of the phonograph cabinet or motor casing 6 adjacent the turntable (not shown) The plate 5 is formed at opposite sides with upstanding ears l on which a horizontal pin 8 is supported for pivotally mounted thereon a substantially U-shaped bracket 9, the bracket being mounted at its side and the bight portion thereof is formed with a vertical slot I for receiving a screw II adjustably positioned in the slot and threaded into the downturned end I2 of a cleaning arm I3.
The cleaning arm I3 is formed of strap metal and has its other end twisted in a vertical plane as shown at I4 and secured in facing contact to one side of a plate I by bolts I6. y
The lower edge of the plate I5 is pivotally mounted in a U'shaped bracket I'I by means of a pin I8, the sides of the bracket I'I being struck 2 from an attaching plate I9 secured to a Ushaped metal backing strip 20 in which a felt wiper blade 2l is secured.
The arm I3 supports the wiper blade 2| in a radially extending overlying position with respect to a phonograph record 22 whereby the wiper blade 2I will gravitate on to the upper surface of the record for cleaning the same during the rotation thereof.
By reason of the pivotal mounting of the arm i3 on the attaching plate 5 the arm and the Wiper blade may be swung upwardly out of engagement with the record, when desired for replacing the record and the pivotal mounting of the wiper blade on the end of the arm will adjust itself throughout the length of the Wiper blade on the surface of the record.
It is believed that the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
A cleaning attachment for phonograph records comprising an attaching plate adapted for attaching to a phonograph cabinet adjacent the turntable thereof, said attaching plate having upstanding spaced parallel ears, a pin mounted transversely in said ears, a U-shaped bracket including spaced parallel sides pivotally mounted on said pin, the bight portion of the bracket having a vertical slot therein, an arm having a downturned end positioned in facing contact with the bight portion of the bracket, an adjusting screw inserted through the slot of the bracket and engaging the downturned end of the arm to vertically adjust the arm on the bracket, a wiper blade, and means pivotally attaching the wiper blade to the other end of the arm for supporting the Wiper blade in gravitating position on to the surface of a record mounted on the turntable of the phonograph, said wiper blade extending radially of the record.
