UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MARTIN AND JOSIAH MERRILL, OF GREAT FALLS, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,684, dated May 17, 1881.
Application filed J annary 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN MARTIN and J 0- SIAH MERRILL, of Great Falls, in the county of Stratford and Stateof New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to lasts for the manufacture of boots and shoes, and it has for its object the production of an improved and durable last, and one which can be changed to suit the style at a small cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section. Fig. 2 is abottom view, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line a: a: of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the wood portion of the last, the bottom of which is formed with the side grooves, a at, extending along the instep and ball, and with the studs or projections b b. The
metallic bottom B is formed with the slotsc-c,
(Mod e1.)
It is obvious that, instead of forming the wood portion with studs or pins and the me tallic portion with holes, this might be reversed by forming the bottom with pins and the wood portion with holes, and accomplish the same result; or the pins and holes might be omitted altogether, the side ribs serving as sufticient stays; but the plan shown and described is preferred.
' We are aware that it is not new to make a last of a metallic body recessed between its heel and toe to receive a wooden block having plug-recesses and provided with longitudinal grooves on its lower part, or to hold a metallic plate by tubes on the plate, screwsleeves, and bolts, or to use on a wooden body a metallic toe and heel connected by edge strips; but
What we claim as new and of our invention is A boot or shoe last consisting of the upper wooden portion, A, and the bottom metallic
