Description
JOSHUA W .1HOUOH1N AND JOSHUA n. HOUOHIN, or BROOKLYN, nssreN-- ORS TC) THE "HYDROCARBON FURNACE COMPANL'YfOF NEW YORK, N. Y.
nwonotarissen-suarten.`
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,662, dated May 1*-7, 1881.
' Application' nien september 1s, Isso. (No moan.)
, `To all whom it may concern v Be it known that we, JOSHUA W. HOUCHIN and JOSHUA It. HOUCHIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new 'and useful Improvement in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the lfollowin g is a specification. Y
4The object of our present invention is to pro vide a simple and effective device for supplying 'atomized hydrocarbon liquid as fuel in furnaees in a manner calculated to insure com.-
. plete combustion (thus not attendant with smoke and cinders) and without necessitating Ythe use of exhaust-steam to promote the draft in the chimney.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lrepresents our invention as applied to a locomotive-boilrfthe furnaceTA beinshwiiiiiloiigtAV tudinalvertical central section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the boiler, fur-nace, and apparatus, the latter being partly broken out.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g part-s.
, A designates the furnace, B the smoke-box,
Vand G the smoke stack or chimney, of, an ordiing bend closed at its upper end. Those walls 5o pulley, M, drivenV by a small separate engine of the flue F which are exposed to the outer air should be made double and filled with slagwool77 or other non-conductin g material, as indicated in the portion thereof which is below the furnace in Fig. 1, wheref designates the inner and f' the outer plate, which form the double Wall, and s' the filling between them.
In the upper rear end ot' the flue F are laterallyopposite openin gs, G, which constitute the centrai inlets to the casin gs H of two fans, I, fastcned upon the same shaft J, which latter is revolved by pulley K and belt L from a larger or other suitable power. The ordinary' tan-1 gential outlet'pipes N of the fans I H are arranged to-enter the rear end bf the furnace A, as seen in the drawings. The furnace A, or the lower portion (or actual lfire-pot) thereof, is lined with fire-brick a, and partly covered with an arched fire-brid ge, also made of lire-brick andinclining forward toward the lower edge of theboiler-tube plate in about the mannershown in the drawings.
P is a central pipe leading to the upper rear' end of the fine l? and connected to convey pe suitable tank to two'branchpipes, Q, leading,
yone to each of the fans l through the central opening, G, and ending within the easing H. Each 'of the pipes Q is provided with a etopcock'it.
Thefoperation is simply as follows; Glhe Iair, entering the valve E on top of the drum D and heated (from the box` B, the boiler, vand the furnace A) along its passage through the ain flue F, is drawn in by the fans l in direction of arrow l, and discharged through the outletsr N into the furnace. rlhe liquid hydrocarbon, entering the casings El through the pipes P R.,
troleum Or other liquid hydrocarbon from a is beaten into atoms by the rapidly-rcvolving the drum D, as shown; but for a stationary furnace the said valve E may be applied in any other suitable part of the ilue Il, though we prefer the arrangement shown.-
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desi rc to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a furnace, A, of one or more revolving fans, I, discharging into tile said furnace, and one or more pipes,' l,"sup
plying Vliquid hydrocarbon into the casing of roo the said fan or fans, substantially as and for 3. The v'alveE, arranged upon theinlet-drum the pui-pose set forth. i i D in front of'the boiler, in combination with i 2. The air-flue F,continuous from the front the iue F, fans I, pipes R, discharging into of the boiler to the rear of and in proximity to fan-casing, and furnace A, substantially as 15 5` the furnace, in combintion with the laterlallygspecified. l
opposite fans I, secure upon acommon s ia y l J rcvolvin g in the said liuc F, and having their i g' outletsN into the furnace, the liquid-fuel-sups y ply pipes P R, discharging into the casings H Witnesses: 1o of the said fans I, and the inclined fire-bridge C. SEDGWIQK,
O,substantiallyas andforthepurpose setfmfh `v A. W. ALMQVIST.
