Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELBERT GAYLORD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO AMZI; M. BARNES, OF SAME PLACE.
HORSE-YOKE.
SPIE(3IFICATION forming .part of Letters Patent No. 241,643, dated May 17, 1881.
Application filed March 19,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, ELBER'I W. GAYLORD, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Yokes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains, to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to horseyokes; and it consists in the combination, with the collars, of collar-bows, horizontal draft-bars, and a vertical clevis-bar; also in the construction and an rangement of parts, as herein specified.
In the drawings, Figure l is an isometric view of a horse-yoke constructed according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is a detached view, showing in detail an adjustable device whereby the hames maybe fitted to collars of different size. Fig. 3 is a detached view, showing the jointed or flexible connection between draft and clevis bars. Fig. 4 is a detached view, showing in detail a suitable device for detachabl y attachin g the collar-bows to the draft-bars. Fig. 5 illustrates a modified construction of the jointed or flexible connection between draft and clevis bars. Fig. 6 is a modified construction of the movable connection between draft-bar and collar-bow.
A are collar-bows; A, name-rings of the ordinary construction, which may be attached either to the collar-bows or to the hames.
B is the upper draftbar, and O the lower draft-bar.
D is the jointed or flexible connection between the draft-bar B and clevis-bar E. This jointed or flexible connection may be had at either one or both ends of the clevis-bar. The connection 1), between the draft-bar and clevisbar, consists of a bolt, m, extending through the draft-bar and pivoted to a vertical pin, it, inserted through the arms of a swiveled bolt,
10, whereby a lateral and vertical movement is allowed the ends of the draft-bar.
E is a clevis of any suitable construction or character. I) is a snap-catch or any suitable device for adj ustably connecting the draft-bars with the collar-bows.
F are the hames,'of ordinary or any suitable construction. These hames are jointed to the collar-bows, substantially as indicated in the drawings; and F is the joint between the collar-bow and hames. This joint is made'adjustable in such a manner that the hames-may be enlarged or diminished to suit collars of dift'erent size.
I do not limit myself narrowly to the specific construction of adj ustin g-hin ge between hames and collar-bow that is illustrated in the drawin gs, as it is evident that this feature of my invention may be varied indefinitely without modifying the character or operation of my device.
Any adjusting connection between collarbow and hames that will effect the object already specified will come within the province of my invention. I
A horse-yoke constructed as already spe- 7o cified, while it serves all the ordinary purposes of the common yoke, possesses the added advantages of allowing the collars to rest easily and firmly upon the shoulders of the horses, be their relative positions what they may. One horse may be ahead of the other or higher than the other, without any displacement or undue strain as to its collar. Each collar-bow is allowed an independent lateral and rotary motion between the upper and lower draft-bars, 8o whilethe jointed connection between the draftbars and clevis-bar allows either collar to move higher or lower than its fellow. Thus are obtain'ed the advantages above enumerated.
The parts described may be constructed. from any suitable material, and in any suitable fashion and proportions.
What I claim is- 1. In a horse-yoke, the combination, with the draft-bar B and clevis-bar E, of the connection 0 D, constructed to allow of both lateral and vertical movement to the ends of the draft-bar, substantially as set forth.
2. In a horse-yoke, the combination, with the draft-bars B O,and collar-bow A, of the spring- 9 5 catch fastening b, substantially as set forth.
In a horse-yoke, the combination, with the collar-bow and hames, of an adjustable jointed connection for securing the hames to the collar-bow, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELBERT W. GAYLORD.
Witnesses:
M. D. LEGGETT, W. E. DONNELLY.
