Application January 22, 1945, Serial-No. 573,950 2 Claims. (01. 77-42) a This invention relates to a universal jig, and more particularly to such a jig adapted for the drilling of holes in round shafts or the like.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved jig adapted to accommodate a variety of sizes of round rods or shafts for drilling.
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a device having indicating means thereon whereby a length of the shaft may be accurately measured for drilling a hole at a predetermined distance from the extremity thereof.
A. still further object is the provision of such a device which may be utilized in conjunction with rods or shafts having either plain or flanged ends.
Still another object is the provision of such a device which will be sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a top plan view of one form of device embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Figure 1 in association with a flanged rod to be drilled, certain concealed parts thereof being indicated in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but showing certain parts thereof in section in association with a rod having a plain end.
Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of the device shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, certain removable parts thereof adapted to be utilized with rods having plain ends being shown in exploded position.
Figure 5 is a sectional view substantially along the line 5-5 of Figure 4 as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows, and
Figure 6is an end elevational View of the device as shown in Figure 4 in assembled position.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference now to the drawings, the device is comprised of a base l0 consisting of an elongated block member having a pair of aligned parallel ridges triangular in cross-section, extending along the upper surface thereof, between which extends a longitudinally extending groove l2. The side portions of the base ID are provided with elongated oppositely disposed slots l3, adapted to engage inwardly extending lugs M positioned at the extremities of a U-shaped clamp IS the upperextremity of which is provided with an aperture through which is passed a set screw I6 provided with a winged head 11.
The clamp I5 is adapted to secure to the base ID a jig member 20- comprised of an elongated block having a V-shaped slot 2| cut in the base thereof, so dimensioned as to overlie the outer angled surfaces of the triangular ridges I The member 20 is provided with a bore 22 extending therethrough, and having an interiorly disposed bushing 23 to serve as a drill' jig through which a drill may be passed for the purpose of drilling a round rod, in a manner to be hereinafter described, positioned or seated between the ridges I! and held in position in the V-shaped slot 2| by means of the clamp I5. p
The block 20 is provided on its upper-surface with a longitudinally extending slot 24 'in'which is positioned a slidable rule 25, the extremity of which is secured to an end plate 26, movable with respect to the block 20. The end plate 26 is mounted on a pair of rods 21 the extremities of which are milled a at 21' adapted to extend into a pair of oppositely disposed parallel aligned bores extending longitudinally into the member 20 and terminating in milled grooves 20', the arrangement being such that the rods 21, end plate 26 and rule 25 are freely slidable with respect to the end of the member 20. A set screw 20" is provided to hold the rods in position. The interiors of the rods 21, which extend through the end platev 26 are provided with bores 28 threaded to receive screws 29 adapted to pass through suitable apertures 30 in an end block 3|. The end plate 26 is provided with an inverted V-shaped channel 32 in the lower portion thereof of a configuration substantially identical to that of the channel 2| while the end block 3| is provided with a V-shaped protuberance 33 adapted, when the block is positioned on the end plate 26 to close the V-shaped recess 32.
From the foregoing the operation of the device should now be readily understandable. When it is desired to drill a round rod 35, as best shown in Figure 2, provided with a flange 3B, the end block 3| is removed by removal of the screws 29, and .the rod seated in the V-shaped depression between the triangular members II with the V- shaped groove 2| of the block 20 positioned thereover. The end plate 26 is then seated against the interior of the flange, and moved outwardly until the rule 25 indicates a desired distance from the extremity of the rod adjacent the bore 22. The wing nut I1 is then tightened clamping the block 20, the rod 35 and the base l securely in related assembly, and the drilling operation is carried out through the bore 22, the bushing 23 being adapted to accommodate the desired size of drill.
When 'a rod 31 having a plain endis adziritd to be drilled the endbl'ock 3] is positioned onthe end plate 26 as best shown in Figure 3, and seated against the outer extremity of the rod 37. The block is then adjusted until the rule 25indicates the desired distance for drilling, and the above operation repeated.
From the foregoing it will now beseen that there is herein provided a. drill jig, adapted to accommodate a varietyof sizes and types of rods to be drilled, and so designed as to provide for a "plurality of sizes of holes to be drilled such was, which accomplishes all the objects of this "invention and others including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive-concept, and as manymodifications may bemadein the embodiment hereinbe'foreshown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely 'asillustrative and-not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. In a jig in combinatioma base block having "agroove therein, a bodyblock having a groove in its lower face and a'transverse bore intersecting said groove adapted to overliesaid' base block,
guide channels in the opposite sidesof said base block, a clamp overlying the body "block and having terminal "ends adjustably mounted in said jguide channels adapted to secure-said 'blo'cksin Lrelatedassembly with arodtobe drilled extending therebetween, an end plate slidably associated with said body block, and an indicator secured to said end plate and slidable along said body block.
2. In a jig in combination, a base block having a groove therein, a body block having a groove in its lower face and a transverse bore intersecting said groove adapted to overlie said base block,
:guide channels'in the opposite sides of said base blddkfa clamp overlying the body block and having depending terminal ends adjustably mounted in said guide channels adapted to secure said blocks in related assembly with a rod to be drilled extending therebetween, an end plate slidably associated with said body block, said end plate having a groove therein of a cross-sectional configuration equivalent to said groove in said body -'block,and an end block removably secured to said end plate for closing said groove in said end plate.
