CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,539, dated May 17, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WORCESTER HADDOOK, of thecity of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Cars or other Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means for preventing accident to the car or its occupants in the event of the breaking of the main brake or any portion thereof.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a car provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one feature of my invention; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower frame-work of the car, showing the various features of my invention.
Ais the shaft or rod to which the brake-wheel or crank is attached, the lower end of which rod is provided with the drum A. To this drum is attached one end of the brakeehain B, the preferable manner of attachment being that here shownviz., by the bolt a, which is passed through the end link, a, and screwed entirely through the drum. The other end of the chain B is attached to the brake-rod B, which latter is attached, in the usual manner, to the brake-lever G. A supplemental drum, D, is provided, the lower end of which is journaled in and supported by the yoke D, which also supports the lower end of the drum A.
The upper end of the drum D is provided with a gear-wheel, E, which engages with another gear-wheel, E, on the rod A. To this supplemental drum D is attached one end of an auxiliary brake chain, 12, the attachment being made in a similar manner to the attachment of the chain B to the drum A. The other end of the chain b is attached to an auxiliary brakerod, b, which latter is attached to the brakelever 0 near the attachment of the rod B. The auxiliary chain 11 and rod 11 are together slightly longer than the chain B and rod B, so that when the latter are drawn tight by the chain B being wound on the drum A the former (chain b and rod 1)) are slack.
The operation of the various features of my invention is as follows: When the brake-wheel or crank is turned the main brake-chain B is wound on thedrum A and the brake-shoe 5 When the rod A pressed against the wheels. is turned by the wheel or crank the drum 1) is also turned through the intervention of the gear-wheels E and E, and as this drum D is turned the chain 1) is wound on it; but there is no strain upon this latter chain, for the reason that it, with its rod 1), is longer, as before stated, than the chainB and rod B; but should the chain B or any of its direct connections or drum or its operating or holding mechanism be broken it will be obvious that the supplemental brake, consisting of drum D and chain b and its connecting and operating mechanism, which are merely auxiliary as long as the main brake remains intact, will take upon itself the office of the main brake. The brake wheel or crank will have to be turned sufficiently to take up the slack of the chain 1), and the brake-shoe will still be held snugly against the wheel of the car, and thus any accident be prevented.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the two drums A D, and chains B and b, and rods B and b, and brake shoes, and connecting and operating mechanism, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the two drums A D,
gear-wheels E and E, and pawl or pawls d, and brake-shoes, and connecting and operating mechanism, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
The combination of the drums A and D,
gear-wheels E and E, pawl or pawls d, chains B and b, rods B and b, lever 0, rod 0, brakebar F, and brake-shoes, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
