STATES PATENT OFFICE.
METALLIC SHIELD FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,150, dated May 24, 1859.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JoNAi-I PLATT and MYRON D. BROOKS, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Metallic Shield for Boots and Shoes; and we do hereby declare that the followingl is a full'and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Our invention consists of an improvement in metallic shields for protecting both the sole and the upper leather of the toes of boots and shoes from external injury, with out entrapping sand or water between the cap and the upper leather.
The accompanying drawing represents a gaiter boot with our improved shield attaehed.
The metallic shield A is fastenedv to the boot on the under side of the sole by small screws or in any other suitable manner. It is made to fit neatly over the sole atthe toe. Directly in front and just above the sole,
' the shield has a fissure s, extending nearly the whole breadth of the shield. Above this fissure is a band of metal, completely guarding the upper leather at the toe. By this arrangement and construction sand or water can escape through the fissure s, and
thusprevent either ehaiing or soaking the leather. As this shield is attached to the are attended with several objections. They do not protect the sole of the boot or shoe, and they form a sack or pocket in which sand and water are often caught and retained. This entrapped sand or gravel, chating between the metallic cap and the leather, soon wears a hole through the upper leather. The water permeates the leather and soon dampens the foot. As it is difcult to make a tight joint between the leatherv and the metal, the; cap itself, by being inserted between the' inner and outer sole, causes the boot or shoe to leak. To remedy these defects, we have invented an improved cap o1' metallic shield. This shield maybe swaged into form from plate metal, or made in any other manner.
7e de not confine ourselves to the precise form herein described, as that may be varied to fit different shoes, or for ornament, without departing from our invention. i
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure bv Letters Patent of the United States is:
The construction of boot and shoe shields, having an openingl in front to prevent water or sand from being entrapped between the shield and the leather; substantially as described.
