This invention relates to folding boxes of the type having an integral cover and body and has iorits principal object to adapt such abox to display P rposes. The invention is an improvement on the box of Rosenthal and Wegusen Patent No. 2,090,375 dated August 17, 1937, enabling the box of that patent to be used for display purposes. The invention consists in thefolding display box and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and the blank from which the of the marginal portion of the blank after the first folding operation,
Fig. 3'is a plan view of the marginal portion of the blank after the second folding operation,
Fig. 4 1543. perspective view showing the stage in the operation of setting up the box at which the side walls and outer end walls have been raised and prior to the interlocking of the strips which reinforce the hinge end of the box,
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. i, with the cover completely set up and with the reinforcing, strips in interlocked position, the body of the box being shown in section and portions of the end wall and cover being broken away to show the reiniorclng strips in position,
Fig. 6 is a side elevation, on a reduced scale, a
showing the set-up box with the cover about to be closed over the body,
Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 9-9 in Fig; 8; and.
Fig. 10 isa perspective view of a modified display arrangement, wherein the cover'is folded into the box body to make a V-shaped display rack.
The blank illustrated in Fig. 1 comprises a relatively long middle portion A, that makes up the body, cover and end wall portions oi the box and two side portions B which terminate short of each end of the middle portion. This blank has four longitudinal scores disposed in two pairs or groups oi two, namely l and 3, and 2 and l and eight transverse scores 5, 8, I, 8, 9, III, II and I 2 which divide the blank into a number of metangles or panels.
1 Claim. (on. ate- 44) The panel C between transverse scores 5 and 9 constitutes the bottom of the box. The panel D,
betweentransverse scores it and ii, constitute'sthe top or cover of the box. The panel E between transverse scores 9 and it constitutes a side or end wall to which said bottom 0 and said cover l D are hingedly secured. Panel F, between transverse scores 7, and 8, constitutes the outer wall of a side or end, hereinafter-called free end. of the body. Panel G between transverse scores ii and I2 constitutes the outer wall of a side or end (hereinafter called free end) of the cover D,
said panels F and G being opposite said. hinged -the free end ofv the cover constitutes the innerslde wall thereof. The narrow rectangle K is a wallxE. Panel H, between transverse scores a and i, contiguous with the panelF oi the body, constitutes the inner wall of said end. Panel J, between transverse scores 6 and 62, contiguous with flap that is defined by the transverse score 5 and which, in the setup position of the box, rests on the bottom 0 thereof with its ends under the in her wall members of the adjacent side of the body. Similarly, the narrow rectangle L constitutes a flap attached to the inner end wall J of the cover and, in the setup position of the box, rests'against the inside of. the cover D with its ends under the inner wall members of the adjacent sides of the cover. )his so far described, the arrangement of score lines and panels is as set forth in said Patent No. 2,090,3l5.
The present blank has an additional transverse score I 3 which divides the cover panel D of the box into two parts 11 and d It is this transverse score is with the resulting subdivision a tion of the blank to form the narrow locking strips K and L above described. The other six transverse scores are divided into three groups, I and 8. 8 and i0, and ii and, the scores or eachgroup being spaced apart the same distance as the two adjacent longitudinal scores I, 3. are spaced apart and slightly more than the distance of either endmost score I or 8 and the trans verse score I or it, closest thereto.
The score lines I and 2 extending along the edges of the middle portion A of the blank are each interrupted by a slit l4 extending in alinement with the two portions of said score lines I and 2 from a point at the Junction of the bottom C with the hinge wall E of the box to a point along the margin of the cover portion D of the blank. A transverse slit I5 extends from the end of each longitudinal slit completely across eachside portion of the blank, thus interrupting the slits 3 and 4 in the side members B of the blank. The outermost narrow panels M and N alongside the bottom panel C fold over on the innermost narrow panels and P to form double side walls both plies Q and S cooperating with a notch ll in the lower edges of the plies of the other strip so that the two strips may be interlocked.
The outermost narrow panels U and V adjacent the cover are folded over against the innermost panels W and X to form double side walls extending a part only of the length of the cover walls have diagonal scores whereby they may be folded to form a hinge connection between the bottom C and its free end wall F and the cover D and its free end wall G. The panels have locking tongues l9 projecting therefrom and their edges r .are provided with triangular flaps 20 formed by score lines 2|, for interlocking with the narrow flaps K and L on the end members. Preferably the panels M and N are secured to the panels 0 and P, as by adhesive, indicated by stippling, as are the panels Q and R to the panels S and T and the panels U and V to the panels W and X, said above mentioned triangular locking projections 20 being free of adhesive or other securing means. Similarly, the portions of the end hinge rectangles Y adjacent to the end walls are secured to said end walls, as'by adhesive, indicated by stippling,
After the several side panelmembershave' been folded together to form side walls and.locking strips, as above described and as shown in Fig. 2, the doubled members are folded over onto the. body or middle portion -of the blank, as shown in Fig. 3, the several small hinge rectangles Y being. then secured to the blank. The box is now ready to set up, which is accomplished by raising the free end walls F and G of the body and cover, which action, because of the hinge connections Y 'aciaav'r a v e d a As shown in Fig. 4, the locking strips'QS. RT are bent slightly outwardly to permit the raising of the hinge wall E and the locking strips are then interlocked behind said hinge wall. After the merchandise has been placed in the body of the box, the cover D is folded over, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
The container may be used for display pur-" poses in various ways. Thus. as shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10, the cover member is bent around the hinge Wall E, the panel d overlapping the locking, strips QS, RT and the width ofsaid panel being slightly greater than the heighth of said hinge wall, to permit the cover D to be folded under against the bottom 0 of the box. "The box may then be positioned at an angle, supported by the corners 22 of the folded under side walls v of the cover.
The display arrangement just described, permits display of the contents of the package 'in their original position. After some of the contents have been sold, or if,,for any other reason, it is desired to use a slightly different form of display, the cover may be folded inwardly about the score line 13 an the corner portions 22 of the side walls UW, VX of the cover supported in the bottom of the box body, as shown in Fig. 10. This creates a V-shaped rack or tray for displaying merchandise.
The above described box has the important advantage of permitting display of merchandise in the original package, while, at the same time, the box has all the important advantages of the integral cover and boxconstruction of said Patent No. 2,090,375.
Obviously, numerous changes may be made without departing from the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown.
What I claim is:
A folding display box comprising a bottom, twoply side walls secured to said bottom, a two-ply free end wall having its outer ply connected to said bottomand to the outer plies of said side 45 walls to form closed corners therewith, a hinge end wall secured to said bottom but free of said side ,walls, a cover hingedly secured to said hingeend wall, said cover having a multi-ply freeend wall and two-ply partial side walls having their outer 50 plies connected to said cover and to the outer ply of said free end wall to form closed corners therewith and extending from said free end wall along a-portion of said cover and portions extending from both plies of said two-ply body side walls 55 toform two-ply locking strips, free of said hinge end wall and said cover and interlocked alongside of said hinge wall, said cover having a foldable sub-panel portion whereby said cover may be folded with its major portion underthe bottom of the box.
