PANTS GUARD AND REFLECTOR Filed Dec. 27, 1944 INV NTO?,

Patented Jan. 7, 1947 PANTS GUARD AND REFLECTOR Raymond L. Col'lin, Springfield, Mass.
Application December 27, 1944, Serial No. 570,032
(ci. ss-so) 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in renecting devices and is directed more particularly to reflecting devices adapted to be worn on the ankle -by a bicyclist or the like.
' The principal objects of the invention are difrected to the provision of reflecting apparatus which is adapted to be attached to the ankle of a person riding a bicycle and is characterized by means for securing a. reflector to a pants guard device.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a reflecting device embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig.2 is a plan view of a device for securing a reflector to a pants guard;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the reiiecting device shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A securing member 2 is shown in Fig. 2 which may be made from relatively thin metal that is relatively bendable. Amain body portion 4 has arm portions 6 extending from opposite sides thereof. Prongs 8 arranged in pairs extend from opposite sides of the arm portions. 1
A light reecting member I is provided which may be of any usual form. In the form of the invention shown, the member I0 is circular in shape and has a plurality of light reflecting elements I2. f
The member I0 may be secured'to the body portion 4 ofthe securing member in any desired manner but in the form of the invention being described there are ears` I4 extending from the body portion which are bendable upwardly and over the edge of the reilecting member.
A pants guard is shown at I8 which is more or less in the form of an oval having side arms i8. This guard is preferably made from springlike metal so that the free ends of the side arms are relatively yleldable to facilitate the guard being slipped over the ankle, arm or the like.
` With the reflector secured to the body portion of the securing member the said member is secured to the guard as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. That is, the arms 6 are bent downwardly adjacent the side portions of the guard and the prongs 8 are bent inwardly and around the side arms of the guard to secure the member 2 to the guard.
There may be more than one reflector member y secured to the guard bymeans of a securing device such as 2. That is, another reflector or reflectors may be secured to a side arm or arms of the guard, all as maybe desired.
It vwill be observed tha-t the guard may be slipped over the ankle or other part of the body so as to yieldingly engage the same and thereby position the reflecting member as may be desired.
The invention may be embodied in other spe ciiic forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not'l as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being v indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoingdescription, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by vLetters Patent of the United States is:
A device of the class described comprising in combination, an elongated strip of resilient metal formed into the form of a U shaped guard having an intermediate portion which curves outwardly and downwardly from a. central portion thereof and terminates in side arms extending downwardly therefrom in spaced relation, a securing member having a. substantially hat circular body portion disposed on the upper side of said intermediate portion of the guard having opposite side portions thereof over said side arms and spaced upwardly away therefrom, arms extending downwardly from said opposite side portions of the securing member onto said side arms, prongs extending outwardly from opposite sides of the said of the body portion of the said securing member and overlying said reflector to secure the same to said securingmember.
