ICE-PITCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,291, dated May 10, 1881.
Application filed April 6, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ice- Pitchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an ice-pitcher which is provided with a detachable ice-chamber, with a tube for charging and with a spout for discharging. The ice-chamber consists of a cylindrical vessel provided with a screw-cap and an external screw-thread and a conical rim formed on its body, said screw-thread being intended to iit an internal screw-thread in an opening in the top of the pitcher, while the conical rim closes down into a corresponding seat on the outer edge of said opening, so that when said ice-chamber is secured in the pitcher a tight joint is formed. and the entrance of the external air at that place is precluded. The tube for charging the pitcher is provided with a screw-cap which is intended to close tight, but which may be so constructed as to be raised slightly, so as to act as a vent, or a separate vent may be provided. The discharge-spout extends to the bottom part of the pitcher.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents a vertical central section. V
In this drawing, the letter A designates a pitcher, which may be formed of glass, porcelain, clay, or of a suitable metal; but I prefer to make the same of some material such as glass or porcelain, which are bad conductors of heat. In the top of this pitcher are two openings, a b, one for the reception of the ice chamber or reservoir B and the other for the reception of the tube 0, which serves to charge the pitcher.
The ice-chamber B is made of sheet metal in the form of a cylinder, closed at its bottom and provided at its top with a screw-cap, c, which can be taken off for the purpose of introducing the ice or freezing-mixture, or for pouring out the water resulting from the melting of the ice.
On the outer surface of said ice-chamber is formed a conical rim, d, and beneath this rim an external screw-thread, c, and the openinga is provided with a conical seat to receive the rim d, and with an internal screw-thread to correspond to the screw-thread c on the ice-chamber, so that when the latter is inserted into the opening and screwed home an air-tight joint is formed between the rim d and its seat.
The tube (J is secured in the opening I) either by a screw-thread or otherwise, and it is provided with a screw-cap, f, so that it can be opened or closed at will.
The spout D communicates by a channel, 9, with the bottom part of the pitcher, and the lower end of this channel is protected by a shield, h, so that in pouring out the contents of the pitcher the liquid flows out first from the bottom, whereit is the coldest, and, furthermore, if foam should have been formed on the top of the liquid, such foam is prevented from passing into the channel g.
In order to permit the liquid to discharge freely from the pitcher, the cap f of the tube 0 may be partially unscrewed, so as to form a vent to prevent the formation of a vacuum in the pitcher or a separate vent may be applied in the top of the pitcher.
By means of my pitcher water, milk, beer, or other liquids can be kept cool without coming in direct contact with the ice, and, it desired, the chamber B can be charged with a suitable freezing-mixture, whereby the temperature of the liquid in the pitcher may be kept as low as may be desirable.
I do not broadly claim as my invention the combination of an independent ice-chamber with a pitcher, such being not new.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a pitcher, A, provided with an opening, to, having an internal screw-thread and a conical seat, of an icechamber, B, having an external screw-thread, e, and a conical rim, (1, and provided with a screw-cap, a, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2.
