This invention relates to improvements lin devices fo-r manually twisting or untwisting the strands of a wire rope or cable, and one of its objects is to provide a device by means of which wire rope may be clamped by the operation of a lever, and by continued pressure on the lever may be turned to untwist or twist the strands of the wire rope or cable.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, with a stationary bearing in which the twisting device may be mounted so that a left twisted wire rope or cable or a right twisted wire rope or cable may be manipulated.
With the above and other objects in view the invention comprises certain newand useful constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specication, and fully illustrated in the drawing, in which: Y
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation, showing a -wire rope engaged by the manual twisting tool.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stationary bearing, showing the twisting device mounted therein, the lever being broken away for convenience.

Fig. 4 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Referring to the accompanying drawing 5 designates a vertical support or standard, having a base 6. On the upper end of this support the plate 'I is attached -by the bolts 8.
The plate 1 is formed with integral bosses 9 and I0, which are formed with a slot II, and the plate 'I is also formed with an upwardly extending slot la, which registers with the slot II, the upper end of which widens.
The horizontal slot II is constructed to receive the trunnion or integral stub shaft I2 of the twister base I3, which is also formed with another trunnion or integral stub shaft I4 on .the opposite side thereof. The base is also provided with bearing faces I 3a and I3b which are adapted to have flush bearing against the end face of the boss I0. The base I3 is also formed with a groove I5, which extends through the stub shafts I2 and I4, which is adapted to receive a wire rope or i cable.
The base I3 is formed with opposing bearings I6 and I'I, whichare spaced from each other to provide a slot I8, in which the lower end of the lever I9 is disposed. This lever is supported on the pivot pin 2U, which extends through the bearings IB and I'I and through the lever, and is provided with a screw thread 20a to engage the bearing I6, and a head 20h to engage the bearing I'I.
The lower end of the lever is formed with a lateral foot or jaw ZI, which is provided with clutch teeth 2Ia, to engage the wire rope, indicated at R. These teeth are disposed in a convex curve and the foot or jaw 2| is offset relative to the major axis of the lever, the pivot pin and the bearings IS and I'I being disposed to one `side of the vertical plane dened bythe rope receiving slot or groove I5.
The wire rope or cable to be twisted or untwisted is passed through a standard clamping device or vise 22, mounted on a stationary support 23, lo-
lcated at a suitable working distance from the standard 5.
By swinging the lever to the right in the position shown in Fig. 4, the lateral foot or jaw 2| will be forced into clutching relation with the rope or cable, and by continuing the movement of the lever in the same direction, the rope will be subjected to a twisting or untwisting operation, depending on whether the wire rope or cable has a right or left twist. The cable is subjected to continued twisting, by` turning the entire twisting device, including the base I3 and the lever I9 in one or more complete circles on the bosses 9 and I0 of the stationary bearing support l. By reversing the position of the twisting head and lever on this support, by withdrawing the stub shaft I2 and inserting the stub shaft I4, the device may be adapted for handling a left twisted wire rope or cable.
My invention will be found extremely` useful in connection with the repair and splicing of wire cables, and enables one man to either open up the twisted strands of the wire rope or cable, or to close these strands to produce the correct lay of the strands upon the rope or cable, and
mounted to turn in the bearing, and a lever piv cal slot to receive a wire rope, a base having a slotted stub shaft mounted to turn in the bearing, a lever pivoted to the base and` provided with a curvedangular jaw formed with teeth to bite into the rope and clamp the same so that by turning the lever and the base the rope may betwisted or untwisted.

A wirerrope twisting device, comprisinga stationary bearing having a slot therein, a vise for holding a wire rope against turning, a. base having stud shafts on opposite sides thereof, either of which may be mounted in the bearing, said base having a slot intermediate of said stub shafts and said stud shafts having a wire rope receiving slot, and a vlever pivoted inthe slot 'of the base and provided with a curved angular jaw on its lower end adapted to engage a wire rope and clamp the same against turning in said slotted stud shafts and to permit of the turning of the base on said stationary bearing.
