Specication of Letters Patent No. 24,122, dated May 24:,` 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. F. HOFFMEISTER, of Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Bakers Oven; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, represents a vertical central section of my improved oven, the line af, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of do. some parts of the platform being broken away in order to expose the lower flues.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.
This invention consists in arranging a rotary platform over two flues which conduct the heat from the fire place in opposite directions around to a chamber in which the flues unite and from which the heat is carried back through an additional flue which extends over one half of the space in which the platform rotates, to the chimney, so that the dough which is placed on the platform and which rotates with the same,'is exposed to a considerable and uniform heat during the rst half of its rotation, and to a less intense heat during the latter half of its rotation, and that a loaf of bread, or any other similar substance, is suficiently baked after it has been once rotated with the platform.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, is a bed plate which rests on legs a, or which may be supported in any suitable manner, and attached to this plate are two cylinders B and C, constructed of sheet metal or of thin cast iron plates, and anextra shell D, surrounds the outer cylinder C, in order to prevent the heat of the latter from being lost by radiation. In the annular space E, between the two cylinders B and C, and supported by rollers b, is the rotary platform E, which is provided with a toothed rim e, and which receives motion by means of two pinions f, which gear into the cogs in the rim c, and which are attached to arbors g, which bear two bevel wheels L, and which extend on opposite sides from the central shaft i, to which a bevel wheel y' is attached which gears into the two bevel wheels 72 and the shaft c', receives motion from any source whatever.
The arbors g, have their bearings in standards c, which are rigidly attached to the bed A, in the space which is encircled by the cylinder B. The platform E, is covered with tiles Z, and under the platform are two flues F, F which extend from the fire place G, in opposite directions around to a chamber H, which communicates with the flues by means of openings m, in the lower part of the cylinders C, and D, and by openings n, in the flues. The lire is built on both sides of the partition o, which separates the two flues on one side, and both their ends where they meet close by the chamber H, are closed bv a partition o, but they are open sidewise, so that the heat of the fire passes from the fire place in opposite directions through the flues to the chamber H. The annular space E, in which the platform travels is covered over by a cover I, which supports a halfcircular flue J, which extends ifrom the chamber H, round over the lire place where it terminates in the chimney K. By this flue the heat which passed from the lower fiues F, F into the chamber H, is conducted back over one half of the platform Vto the chimney.
The operation is as follows. Dough is introduced on the tiles Z, of the platform from the kneading machine by means of an endless. band, or it may be placed on the platform by some other suitable means, while the platform rotates slowly in the direction of the arrow, (Fig. 2). The speed with which the platform rotates depends upon the intensity of the fire, and experience must show how fast this motion can be in order to give time to the dough to bake properly with one revolution.
In order to be able to introduce dough and to discharge the same, an opening g, is cut into the sides of the cvlinders C, and D, and at the same place an opening is left in the cover I, so that the dough, as soon as it has been deposited on the `olatform passes rightA over the fire place and through that part of the annular space E', where the same is exposed to the heat of the flue F, from below and to the heat of the flue J, from above, and the heat of the fire and the speed of the platform must be so regulated that by the time the dough has reached the chamber H, What I claim as new and desire to secure it needs butlittle more to finish its baking, by Letters Patent, is
