BEST AVAILABLE COPY Urmsu STATES SPECIFICATION forming To all whom it may concerns Be itknown that I, Fasnoxs W. CARPENTER, oi Harrison, in the countv oi \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Toy Horses, oi which the following is a speciiloation.
Toy horses have been provided with wheels nd cranks that are connected to the horses y rigid stri is oi metal, so that as the cranks are IOVOiVOi by the wheels the horses are noved to imitate centering. In this case the horses feet are kept out oi contact with the iloor, so as to allow oi the unimpeded movement oi the crank.
In my present invention the pivoted toy torso is moved by a iiexible connection to the it or head, and the crank is oi a suilioient ength to lift the hind legs oi the toy horse from he iioor and then allow the rear portion oi the horse to drop by its superior weight uml the hind feet to rest on the iioor until the iiexiblo commotion is again drawn upon suilicicntiy to pull down the head aml raise the hind legs.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan ei two toy horses and the actuating-wheels. Fig. 2 is a side view oi the same; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of a single toy horse upon wheels.
The tongue n and cross-barf may be shnliar to those in my Patent No. 234,084 and there is a wire, 0, forming a rivet i'or theitorses A ii to swing n lOll, imt sa d pivot-wire is fastened at its at ili ie to the tongue n and lms the movable pins 1! e, one at each end, to hold the toy horses in place. The cords a a form the traces,
that are slipped ever the ends oi the wire 0 after the horses are put in place and before the pins v are inserted through the holes in such wire 0.
The wheeisooare each mode with teeth around perlphery, toinsurethe rotationwhendrawn over the iioor, and the axle o for said wheels passes through thcdownwurd p ioction l'lOlll the tongue n. Those wheels are mlependcnt oi each other and each wheel has a crank-pin, I, aml a iiexih 0 connection, It, to the front part olt-he horse, preferably to thehoad.. 1 meter to employ a short time of sheet metal or the crank-pin i topass hron h,and connect to the same a small strap oi lea her or other material passing to the mouth oi the toy horse so that the crank will pull down the head oi the horse and swing it upon the pivot-wire 0, raising the PATENT Ur-rice.

TOY HORSE.
part of Letters Patent No. 241,188, dated May 10, 1881. Application itled March its, test. (No model.)
hind part of the horse; and when the crank-pin passes its lowest point the horse will swing the other way in consequence of the back end being heaviest, and the hind leg will rest upon the iioor or other support, and thus a motion will be given to the two horses independently in an amusing manner as the toy is drawn alon mi. 3 shows a sin le horse pivoted on a frame with four whee s, and there is a crank and iiesible connection from one oi the wheels to the head of the horse, so as to give to the toy the movements beiore described.
The bits p for the horses are made oi short. wires passed through the metal at the mouth portion oi the toy horse. There is a washer near each end, secured by the ends oi the wire bein riveted, and the wire hit projects suillcienty for the tioxlbie connect ion to be passed over t.
I claim as my invention- 1. The comb nation, with a pivoted toy horse and wheel ami crank, oi a iloxible connection from the crank to the front portion oi the toy horse substantially as set forth.
2. n a. toy, the combination of a tongue, a, pivot-wire o, toy horses A and 1!, wheels 0 0, cranks i i, and iicxihie connections irom the cranks to the forward portion oi each horse, suhstantlali as set forth.
3. A toy iorse pivoted so that one end is heavier than the other, in combination with a wheel and crank-pin, and a iiexible or yielding connection from the crank-pin to the lightest. emi oi the toy horse substantially as set forth.
-I. The wheel 0, with a toothed peri ihcry and a crank-pin, in combination with up voted toy horse, amt a connection irom the crank to the horse as set forth.
5. n a toy, the iicsibie traces a (I, attached at their book ends mul having loops at. their trout ends, in combination with the toy horses aml the pivot-wire over which the truce-loops are passed, as set i'orth.
0. In a toy horse, a bit iermed oi a wire passing throu h the toy at its mouth, and provided with was zero secured by the riveted ends oi the wire, as set forth.
Signed by me this 20th day oi March, A. i).
