NrTep STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPI-IUS O. SCHUTZ, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
MACHINE FOR ASSISTING IN MAKING CIGAR-BUNCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,160, dated May 10, 1881.
Application led January 28,1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ADoLrHUs C. SCHUTZ, in the city ot' Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have. invented a new and useful Machine for Assisting in Making Cigar- Bunches; and I .hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation oi" the same.
My invention relates to a convenient table or bench for service in the manufacture of cigars; and the novelty consists in the construction and relative arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set lnth, and specilically pointed out in the claim.
The object of the invention is to construct a machine to assist in making a cigar-bunch. ln such machineI suspend an apron or rolling canvas, which passes over a roller and is adapted to be depressed or sunk between. vertical frames, in which canvas the filling and binder together approximately form a cigar-bunch before it goes to the press. This apron extends downwardly after it passes the roller, and is secured to a pivoted and weighted treadle-le ver, as shown. The vertical standard is horizontally adjustable to form diiierent-sized cigars, and a convenient table or operating-surface is provided for the artisan,
The drawing represents a central vertical longitudinal section, and forms a part ot' this Specification, referring to which- A represent-s the table, having slot d' and set-screw d, by means of which the standard C is made adjustable in relation to the standard a a, which has an open top, within which is journaled a roller, o, over which passes a canvas apron, secured at b to the standard G through the slot E, and also secured to the lever H at h, which lever is pivoted at h2 to the frame, as shown, and provided with a weight, i. The lever H is pivoted to the downwardlyextending iianges g, and is provided with a treadle-standard, K. The roller c is journaled within the standards a upon the shaft B, and c represents the apron or rolling canvas.
From the upper portion of the adjustable standard C projects an inclined table or plate, j', within convenient reach of the operator.
In the operation of my invention the binder ards a O and pressed downward, the weight allowing proper slack thereto. The filling is is then placed within the binder, and by any convenienttreadle or foot-lever the force of the weight is overcome, and the filling and binder 55 are rolled into an approximate form ot' a cigar. As the canvas or apron tightens and becomes approximately horizontal between the standards a O, the cigar-bunch is within convenient reach of the operator, and may be treated and 6o manipulated upon the table j', after which it is placed in the press.
A piece of canvas or other suitable material is passed through the slotE of the front plate,
O, and is secured by the overlapping edge b 65 from being withdrawn in one 'direction through the slot E. It is then carried over the roller B, down through the bottom standard, a., and suitably attached to the cross-bar h. Said canvas is made long enough to allow it to be de- 7o pressed between the standards a a and front plate, O. The weight t pulls down that end of the lever H to which it is attached, and is made suiiciently heavy to allow the canvas to be depressed down between the hollow standard a 7 5 a and the front plate, C, to a depth so as to form a depression or cavity sutliciently large to receive and hold the required quantity ot' filler placed therein. I then take the front of the binder coveringthe table j' and carry it 8o over the roller, then raise the bunch by the rods k k, at the same time draw the bunch back by rolling the same toward the table, and then raise it therefrom and place it in the mold,` when it is shaped for the wrapper.
What I claim is- The frame A, havin g downwardIy-projectin g flanges g and the adjusting-slot d', in combination with the standard a a, the adjustable standard C, carrying plate f, the set-screw d, 9o roller c, apron c ,lever H, pivoted at t2,w`eight fi, and treadle h3 K, all combined and operating as and for the purposes herein set forth.
ADOLPHUS O. SCHUTZ.
