Claims. (C1. 51-92) This invention relates to improvements in grinding machines. y l
It has Aparticular referencev to a structure especially adapted for they sharpening of the cruciform blade of a meat grinder, but many of `its features are also adaptable to other grinding problems.
1t is the object of the invention to povide a novel, improved and simpliiied form for the various adjustments and movements of a blade with respect to a grinding wheel, and to make the achievement of the requisite movements as easy and simple for the operator as is possible.
The objects Will appear' in moredetail to those skilled inthe art upon analysis of the 'following disclosure of the'invention.

The table 25 isvprovided, as best showninFigs. 4 and 5, withgibmeans'32, constituting aguideway Vupon which the slide 133 is' reciprocable to and from the main frame. Reciprocation is manually effected and controlled -by a hand lever 34 pivoted to the' slide at 35 and provided with a movable gfulerum at 35 Yupon a link 31 pivoted at -38 'to`the table 25l (see Figs. 2 and 3').

The indexing work carrierY 4l has, on. its outer periphery, a number of lugs at 49 corresponding to a number of bladesk requiring sharpening. `Surrounding theA cup-'shaped support 40 isa gage ring 53 provided with a handle 54 yandwitha clamp bolt 55 extending through the slot 56 into of the work piece are accurately positioned for engagement by the grinding Wheel.
The work piece being positioned on the fixtures 42 of the carrier 4|, and the carrier 4| being manually indexed to engage one of its lugs 49 with the stop 51, it will be found that one of the blades of the work piece Will bear properly predetermined relation to the grinding Wheel |5. This relationship is predetermined, as above indicated, by the indexing of the positioning ring 53; and by the tilting of the table 25.
The sub-frame |1 is now oscillated to move the Work piece upwardly, this being done by pressure of the operators foot on the pedal 2|. The exact ultimate position may be predetermined by the limit nut |8. With the subframe raised, the operator now draws the handle 34 to the right, as viewed in Fig. 3, thereby advancing slide 33 to draw one of the blades 46beneath the grinding wheel. The operator himself Will regulate the extent to which the entire length of the blade may be passed beneath the wheel. Ordinarily, more than one traverse will be made and, in the nal traverse, the slide 33 may be given the extreme movement permitted by, stop screw 39, thereby bringing the edge 48 of another blade into contact with the side face of the wheel |5as shown in Fig. 6.
The surface 41 of the blade closest to the wheel and the edge 48 of the next consecutive blade of the work piece having now been ground, theoperator will release pressure on the pedal 2| to allow the subframe to be lowered to the position illustrated in Fig. 1, whereupon he will manually lift the' indexing Work support 4| sufficiently to enable its lug 49 to clear the stop 51. He will thereupon index the support V90"` to engage its next successive lug With the stopl 51, thereby positioning another blade to be operated on by the wheel. The cycle of operations,'as above described, is then repeated.
When the device has been properly set in the manner aboveA set forth, it will be apparent that n0 skillwhateveris required to` achieve perfect grinding of the blades. Moreover, the grinding may be effected very rapidly, the operators left hand controlling the lever 34,*his foot controlling the pedal 2|, and hisY right hand remaining available for indexing the work support andpositioning and removing the `Work pieces. f l
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame and a tool' operatively supported therefrom, of a fulcrum bar projecting laterally from the frame, a subframe pivoted on said bar and having a portion pivotally movable to and from said tool, means for actuating said portion comprising a pedal and motion transmitting connections from the pedal tosaid subframe, stop means adjustable between the subframe and the frame-for limitingthe pivotal movement of the subframe, a table, pintle means pivotally connecting the table to .the subframe wherebysaid table is tiltable res'pectingfsaid subframe, clamping meansior xingthe'position of tilted adjustment of the table respecting the subframe, means `providing.aguidevvay transversely of the table, a slide reciprocableupon the 4 guideway, handle means for reciprocating the slide, and a work carrier provided with an index mounted upon the slide.
2. The structure of claim 1, in which said handle means comprises a lever centrally in pivotal connection with the slide and having a fulcrum connection with a link, said link being pivoted to said table.
3. The structure of claim 1, in which said slide is provided with a support on which the Work carrier is rotatably mounted, and the work carrier is provided With a stop, said slide having an arcuately .extending stop member provided with `stop means for coacting with the stop of the work carrier, said member being adjustably mounted on the slide and having clamping means for maintaining its adjustment angularly about the work carrier.
4. In a device of the character described, the
combination with a main frame and a grinding wheel provided with means operatively supporting it from said frame, of a subframe in pivotal connection Withsaid frame atV a point remote fromsaid wheel, said subframe having a portion adjustable to and from the Wheel, means including a foot pedal and link for actuating said subframe portion toward the wheel, a stop bolt in pivotal connection with the subframe 4and provided with a stop nut, said frame having bracket means with which said nut is engageable whereby adjustably to limit the approach of said subframe portion to said wheel, a table provided with a transverse pintle pivotally connecting the table with the subframe, a lever on the table,A a segment on the subframe With which said lever coacts, clamping means for adjustably securing the lever to the segment whereby adjustably to x lthe ltilted position of the table respecting the subframe, means providing a transverse guide- .49 Way on the table, a slide reciprocable on said guideway, stop means for limiting the reciprocation of said slide respecting the table, a circular support upon the slide, a stop'ring disposed upon the slide about the support, means for adjustably determining the angular position of the stop ring respecting the slide, a work carrier rotatably adjustable upon the support, said ring and ,carrier having means interengageable in selectving indexing positions of the carrier, and xture 0 means on the carrier for supporting aserles of blades to be successively indexed into operative position beneath said vvvheel to be sharpened thereby, the movement of said slide carrying a selected blade longitudinally beneath 'the Wheel 5,5 `at an angle determined by the tilt of the table and a level determined by said stop nut and bracket `when said subframe portion is elevated by said pedal.
