" COMBINED ENVELOPE AND WRITING SHEET Filed April 24', 1945 fatented Nov. 12, 1946 COMBINED ENVELOPE AND WRITING SHEET Henry F. Auger, Medford, Mass., assignor of onehalf to Lewis H. Peters, Mcdford, Mass.
Application April 24, 1945, Serial No. 590,057
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to envelopes of the stationery type, and more particularly to envelopes adapted to hold relatively small articles to be sent through the mail.
Every so often the occasion arises where a person wants to send a small article such as a handkerchief, a few coins, a souvenir present, etc., to another person. Heretofore, the sender usually hesitated to use a conventional enevelope for this purpose for fear it may be torn too readily and the article lost, also because an enclosed covering note or letter may become more or less crumbled by the article and might cast reflections on the senders reputation of good taste. Hence, most persons preferred to do the article up in a small package, send it through the mail, and send a covering note by separate mail, usually involving not only tedious efforts to obtain a neat package but a trip to the post office as well.
It is the aim and object of the present invention to provide an envelope which serves as a neat package for small articles, has a special place on which to write a covering note, may be sealed as quickly and simply as a conventional envelope, is not liable to be readily torn, and may simply be dropped into the nearest mail box on putting the proper postage stamp or stamps thereon.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the latter may be carried into efiect will best be understood from the following description of an illustrative embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an open envelope embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a section through the envelope when sealed.
Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of envelopes embodying the present invention in modified ways.
Referring to Fig. 1, the envelope I is formed from a blank folded to provide a pocket section having inturned side portions I I, an intermediate flap I2 continuous with the back I3 of the pocket section and creased at I4 so as to be foldable against the front I5 of said pocket section, and a seal flap I6 continuous with the intermediate flap I2 and creased at H so as to be foldable against the back I3 of said pocket section II in order to close the envelope in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The paper from which the envelope I0 is made is preferably, though not necessarily, somewhat stronger than that from which ordinary stationery envelopes are made.
Cemented to the intermediate flap I2 is one half I8 of a preferably pre-folded Writing sheet I 9. The sheet I 9 has a width sufficient to overlap the inner edges of the inturned portions II when the envelope is closed and thereby serve as a back for the pocket and as a reinforcing member for the envelope. The seal flap I6 is provided with adhesive strips as at 20, and the intermediate flap I2 is provided with adhesive strips as at 2I, for sealing the side edges of the envelope by adhering to the inturned portions I I.
In using the envelope, advantage may first be taken of the writing sheet I9 to pen a note, whereupon the article to be sent, for instance, a handkerchief 22 (Fig. 2), is inserted into the pocket section. The cement-lined portions 2| of the intermediate flap l2 may then be wetted, whereupon said intermediate flap with the folded writing sheet I9 thereon is foldedagainst the front I5 of the pocket section and pressed down at the cement-lined portions 2| thereof in order to cause adherence of the intermediate flap I2 to the pocket section. The cement-lined portion 20 of the seal flap I6 is next wetted and the latter folded and pressed against the back I 3 of the pocket section to complete the sealing of the envelope Ill. The recipients name and address, as well as the senders return address may be written on and the proper postage stamp or stamps attached to the outer face 25 of the intermediate flap I2 before or after the envelope is sealed. To facilitate the addressing of the envelope, particularly before the same is closed and sealed, the outer face 25 of the intermediate flap I2 may be marked in any suitable manner to indicate its reservation for the recipients name and address, the senders return address and the postage stamp or stamps. For instance, the outer face 25 of the intermediate flap I2 may have lines imprinted (not shown) on which to write the above-mentioned data, or may have a rectangle (not shown) imprinted in the proper corner to indicate the place for the postage stamp or stamps.
The modified envelope It! of Fig. 3 is particularly well suited for a brief covering note requiring no more space than that on an average postcard. To this end, no separate writing sheet is attached to the intermediate flap I2, but the inner face 26 of the latter is used to pen the note.
Another modified envelope is shown in Fig. 4, in which, in addition to the inner face 26' of the intermediate flap I 2", a short sheet of writing paper 2! may be used to write a note. The writing sheet 21 may be cemented to the intermediate flap I2" in the manner shown at 28 in Fig. 4, and
creased as at 29 to facilitate the unfolding of the sheet 2'! for writing thereon.
While either one of the envelopes described herein is Well suited for personal use, it is equally well suited for commercial use. For instance, a manufacturer of small articles may prefer the type of envelope disclosed herein to costly wrappings or packages, for the purpose of sending the article through the mail or offering it to the public in stores. The space in or on the envelope provided for writing may be used advantageously for instructions, an invoice, etc.
I claim:
An envelope comprising a, blank of paper, ofa shape adapted to be folded to provide a portion forming a pocket section having inturnedside portions, a seal portion and anintermediate por- 4 tion of substantially the same width and length as the pocket section, said seal portion and said intermediate portion having adhesive strips at their edge portions, and a sheet of paper secured to a face of said intermediate portion and adapted to overlap the inner edges of said inturned side portions and serve as a partial closure for the pocket section-rand as a reinforcing member for side portions to seal the sides of said pocket section when the envelope is closed.
