This invention relates to a clamping device for the intermediate and inner cooling sections of a blast furnace cinder notch.
The invention has among its objects the provision of an improved clamp for the intermediate and inner cooling sections of a blast furnace cinder notch, such sections being termed by the art monkey cooler and monkey, respectively. The clamping device of the present invention is characterized by its simplicity of construction and its long life in service, as well as its positiveness in holding the monkey and monkey cooler in the desired positions in the cinder notch to avoid damage thereto.
These and further objects of the invention will be more readily apparent in the following description.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a view in vertical cross section through a cinder notch of a blast furnace, the section being taken along the line I-I in Figure 3;
Figure 2 is a view in horizontal cross section through the portion of the furnace shown in Figure 1, the section being taken along the line II-II in Figure l, the refractory furnace lining above the cinder notch being broken away; and
Figure 3 is a view in end elevation of the section of the furnace shown in Figure 1 at the cinder notch, the view being taken from outside the furnace. v
The blast furnace to which the cinder notch monkey and monkey cooler clamping 'device of the present invention is applied is provided with a metallic shell 2 having within it a refractory furnace lining l. At the location of a cinder notch the shell 2 is provided with an opening 6 about which is positioned an outer reinforcing plate 8 attached to the furnace shell, and adjacent to which and coaxial therewith there is further provided an inner ring It fastened to the shell, ring it having a frusto-conical inner surface 12 having its smaller diameter at the end innermost of the furnace.

the outer surface 24 of the latter being of a frusto-conical configuration similar to that of surface 22 so that when monkey cooler is thrust inwardly of the furnace it makes a fluid tight connection with the outer cooler. The monkey cooler 2i] is similarly provided with an inner surface 28 at the end thereof inwardly of the furnace, surface 28 likewise being of frusto-conical shape to support the monkey 26 by contact with the correspondingly shaped conical outer surface 3%} thereof and to provide a, fluid tight connection therewith when the monkey is thrust inwardly of the furnace.
In the normal operation of the blast furnace the bath 34 of the molten iron therein has its top somewhat below the inner end of the outer cooler, and the inner ends of the outer cooler, the monkey cooler, and the monkey are submerged in molten slag or cinder 32, such slag being drawn off at predetermined intervals through the opening in the monkey. The flow of the slag through the cinder notch is prevented, except when slag is beingtapp-ed, by the bott 35 which is inserted in the monkey and is held therein by the rod attached thereto and other conventional holding means not shown.
Cooling of the outer cooler M, which is provided with an interior cooling chamber, is accomplished by introducing water thereinto through vertical inlet pipe 38 and by exhausting water therefrom through pipe 40 which is shown more clearly in Figures 2 and 3. Connection between the inlet pipe 38 and the outer cooler is effected by the horizontal pipe 42, and
connection between the cooler and the outlet pipe G l is provided by horizontal pipe 44. The monkey and monkey cooler are similarly watercooled, there being provided an inlet water pipe 46 connected to the monkey cool-er 20 and an inlet pipe 48 connected to the monkey 2t, and an outlet pipe 50 connected to the monkey cooler and an outlet pipe 52 connected to the monkey. Such pipes, as shown in Figure 1, have horizontal portions of substantial length adjacent their points of connection to the monkey and monkey cooler, beyond which they are provided with bends so that they then run parallel to the furnace shell but are spaced somewhat therefrom. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the inlet and outlet pipes 53 and 50 from the monkey cooler 20, are so shaped that their vertical portions lie somewhat closer to the furnace shell than do the vertical portions of inlet and outlet pipes i8 and 52 for the monkey 26.
The monkey cooler and monkey are held in the position shown in Figure '1 so that they form a slag tight joint between the outer cooler and the -monkey cooler, and between the monkey cooler and the monkey solely by means clamping the inlet and outlet cooling pipes leading to the monkey cooler and monkey.
In accordance with the present invention, such clamping means is provided with an L-shaped clamp bar 54 having a vertical leg 56 received in the clamp bar holder 58 which is attached to the outer surface of the reinforcing plate 8 at a position vertically above the axis of the cinder notch. Vertical leg 56 of the clamp bar is provided with a plurality of holes 60 through one of whichis inserted a pin 62 the outer ends of which rest on the top surface of holder 58 to retain the clamp bar in the holder in the desired vertical position. Clamp bar 54 is further provided with a horizontal arm 64 extending outwardly of the furnace in a direction parallel to the axis of the monkey and monkey cooler. In the modification shown, the horizontal arm 6 is square in cross section and has mounted thereon a first clamp plate 85 which has a correspondingly sized square hole centrally thereof so that the clamp plate sides over arm 64, plate 66 being flat in its central section and being provided on each end thereof with bent portions generally semi-circular in horizontal section, as shown in Figure 2, to receive the vertical portions of pipes 46 and 50. Behind the first clamp plate 66 on arm 64 there are mounted a number of relatively thin shim or separator plates 68 which are likewise provided with a square central hole to receive arm 64. A vertical wedge positioned in a vertical slot H centrally of arm 64 engages the rear separator plate 68 and the front separator plate of a, second series of separator plates 72. A second clamp plate M, generally similar in shape to the first plate 66, and having bent portions on each end thereof to receive the vertical portions of pipes 48 and 52, is also mounted on arm 64 and is held in pipe engaging position by a second vertical wedge 16 which runs through a second vertical slot in arm 64.
It will be seen that the clamping device of the present invention for the monkey and monkey cooler is simple and positive in action, that it permits ready assembly and disassembly and adjustment of the cinder notch parts, and that it presents the thrust from the furnace shell to the monkey and monkey cooler in a nearly direct line in a vertical plane. Thus, the monkey and momkey cooler may be readily removed from the furnace after disconnecting unions (not shown) in the inlet and outlet pipes leading thereto, merely by the driving out of Wedges 19 and 16 from the slots in arms 64 and the removal of the clamp plates and separator plates from the horizontal arm 64 of the clamp bar. The clamping device is flexible in that it allows vertical adjustment of the clamp arm in its connection to the furnace shell. Since the vertical arm of the L-shaped clamp bar lies in the vertical plane of the axes of the monkey and monkey cooler and is placed symmetrically with respect to the water cooling pipes leading thereto, the thrust upon such pipes by the clamping device is a balanced one, and such thrust proceeds almost directly from the furnace shell in a straight line. As a result, the clamping device has a long service life, and is positive in its holding of the monkey and monkey cooler in the desired positions, thereby preventing the damage which would occur should either the monkey or monkey cooler slide outwardly of the furnace as a result of the internal pressure due to the furnace blast and hydrostatic head of the slag, thereby allowing the leakage of molten slag between the outer cooler, monkey cooler, and monkey, with resulting damage to such parts, and to the furnace and its surroundings.
Having thus fully disclosed the improved clamping device for the inner and intermediate cooling sections of a blast furnace cinder notch, I therefore desire to claim as new the following.
1. In the combination of a blast furnace having a wall comprising a shell and a lining, a cinder notch therethrough, an outer cooler for the cinder notch projecting through the furnace Wall, a monkey cooler within the outer cooler and a monkey within the monkey cooler, said coolers engaging one another in the order named along generally conical seats decreasing in diameter in a direction toward the interior of the furnace, said monkey and monkey cooler being water-cooled, the latter two having inlet and outlet cooling water carrying pipes having portions of appreciable length projecting rearwardly therefrom in a direction generally parallel to the axes of the coolers, the improved holding means for the monkey and monkey cooler which comprises clamping means engaging the inlet and outlet cooling water pipes of the monkey and monkey cooler at points outwardly of the furnace shell, a clamp holding member having a enerally straight arm parallel to the axes of the coolers attached adjacent one end to the clamping means, and means at the other end of said arm of the clamp holdin member attaching it to the furnace shell at a location lying at least substantially in a plane containing the axes of the coolers.
2. In the combination of a blast furnace having a wall comprising a shell and a lining, a cinder notch therethrough, an outer cooler for the cinder notch projecting through the furnace wall, a monkey cooler within the outer cooler and a monkey Within the monkey cooler, said coolers engaging one another in the order named alon generally conical seats decreasing in diameter in a direction toward the interior of the furnace, said monkey and monkey cooler being watercooled, the latter two having inlet and outlet cooling water carrying pipes having portions of appreciable length projecting rearwardly therefrom in a direction generally parallel to the axes of the coolers, the parallel portions of the inlet and outlet pipes of both the monkey and monkey cooler being arranged symmetrically with respect to and on opposite sides of a plane containing the axes of the coolers, the improved holding means for the monkey and monkey cooler Which comprises clamping means engaging the inlet and outlet cooling Water pipes of the monkey and monkey cooler at points outwardly of the furnace shell, a clamp holding member having a generally straight arm parallel to the axes of the coolers attached adjacent one end to the clamping means centrally of the latter, and means at the other end of said arm of the clamp holding member attaching it to the furnace shell at a location lying at least substantially in a plane containing the axes of the coolers.
3. In the combination of a blast furnace having a wall comprising a shell and a lining, a cinder notch therethrough, an outer cooler for the cinder notch projecting through the furnace wall, a monkey cooler within the outer cooler and a monkey within the monkey cooler, said coolers engaging one another in the order named along generally conical seats decreasing in diameter in a direction toward the interior of the furnace. said monkey and monkey cooler being watercooled, the latter two having inlet and outlet '5 cooling water carrying pipes having portions of appreciable length projecting rearwardly therefrom in a direction generally parallel to the axes of the coolers, the inlet and outlet pipes of both the monkey and monkey cooler having further portions thereof at a substantial angle to the first named parallel portions, the angularly disposed portions of the several pipes being located adlacent each other and outside the furnace shell, the improved holding means for the monkey. and monkey cooler which comprises clamping means engaging the angularly disposed portions of the inlet and outlet COOIiIlg water pipes of the monkey and monkey cooler, a, clamp holding member having a generally straight arm parallel to the axes of the coolers attached adjacent one end to the clamping means, and means at the other end of said arm of the clamp holding member attaching it to the furnace shell at a location lying at least substantially in a plane containing the axes of the coolers.

In the combination of a blast furnace having a wall comprising a shell and a lining, a cinder notch therethrough, an outer cooler for the cinder notch projecting through the furnace wall, a monkey cooler within the outer cooler and a monkey within the monkey cooler, said coolers engaging one another in the order named along generally conical seats decreasing in diameter in a direction toward the interior of the furnace, said monkey and monkey cooler being watercooled, the latter two having inlet and outlet cooling water carrying pipes having portions of appreciable length projecting rearwardly therefrom in a direction generally parallel to the axes of the coolers, the parallel portions of the inlet and outlet pipes of both the monkey and monkey cooler being arranged symmetrically with respect to and on opposite sides of a plane containin the axes of the coolers, said pipes having further substantially parallel portions thereof at a substantial angle to the first named parallel portions, the angularly disposed portions of the several pipes being located adjacent each other and outside the furnace shell, the improved holding means for the monkey and monkey cooler which comprises clamping means engaging the angularly disposed portions of the inlet and outlet cooling Water pipes of the monkey and monkey cooler, a clamp holding member having a generally straight arm parallel to the axes of the coolers attached adjacent one end to the clamping means centrally of the latter, and means at the other end of said arm of the clamp holding member attaching it to the furnace shell at a location lying at least substantially in a plane containing the axes of the coolers.
5. In the combination of a blast furnace having a wall comprising a shell and a lining, a cinder notch therethrough, an outer cooler for the cinder notch projecting through the furnace wall, a monkey cooler within the outer cooler and a monkey within the monkey cooler, said coolers engaging one another in the order named along generally conical seats decreasing in diameter in a direction toward the interior of the furnace, said monkey and monkey coolers being watercooled, the latter two having inlet and outlet cooling water carrying pipes having portions of appreciable length projecting rearwardly therefrom in a direction generally parallel to the axes of the coolers, the inlet and outlet pipes of both the monkey and monkey cooler having further portions thereof at a substantial angle to the first named parallel portions, the angularly disposed portions of the several pipes being located adjacent each other and outside the furnace shell, the improved holding means for the monkey and monkey cooler which comprises clamping means engaging the angularly disposed portions of the inlet and outlet cooling water pipes of the monand monkey cooler, said clamping means comprising a cross member engaging the rear surfaces remote from the furnace of the pipes leading to the monkey and a cross member engaging the rear surfaces remote from the furpace of the pipes leading to the monkey cooler, a clamp holding member having a generally straight arm parallel to the axes of the coolers attached adjacent one end to each of the cross members of the clamping means, and means at the other end of said arm of the clamp holding member attaching it to the furnace shell at a location lying at least substantially in a plane containing the axes of the coolers.
6. In the combination of a blast furnace having a wall comprising a shell and a lining, a cinder notch therethrough, an outer cooler for the cinder notch projecting through the furnace wall, a monkey cooler within the outer cooler and a monkey within the monkey cooler, 'said coolers engaging one another in the order named along generally conical seats decreasing in diameter in a direction toward the interior of the furnace, said monkey and monkey cooler being watercooled, the latter two having inlet and outlet cooling water carrying pipes having portions of appreciable length projecting rearwardly therefrom in a direction generally parallel to the axes of the coolers, the parallel portions of the inlet and outlet pipes of both the monkey and monkey cooler being arranged symmetrically with respect to and on opposite sides of a plane containing the axes of the coolers, said pipes having further substantially parallel portions thereof at a substantial angle to the first named parallel portions, the angularly disposed portions of the several pipes being located adjacent each other and outside the furnace shell, the improved holding means for the monkey and monkey cooler which comprises clamping means engaging the angularly disposed portions of the inlet and outlet cooling water pipes of the monkey and monkey cooler, said clamping means comprising a cross member engaging the rear surfaces remote from the furnace of the pipes leading to the monkey and a cross member engaging the rear surfaces remote from the furnace of the pipes leading to the moneky cooler, a clamp holding member having a generally straight arm parallel to the axes of the coolers adjustably attached adjacent one end thereof to each of the cross members of the clamping means centrally of such cross members, and means at the other end of said arm of the clamp holding member attaching it to the furnace shell at a location lying at least substantially in a plane Containing the axes of the coolers, said last named means comprising a second arm on the clamp holding member substantially at right angles to the first arm, said first arm lying in a vertical plane through the axes of the coolers, a member having a sleeve attached to the furnace shell slidably receiving the second arm of the clamp holdin bar, and means adjustably holding the said second arm in the sleeve.
