Arraemf f patented Sept. 10, 1974 FASTENING DEVICE Charles H. Judd and Charles Giammatteo, Cleveland, Ohio, assignors to Tinnerman Products, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Original application November 28, 1942, Serial No. I 467,224, now Patent No. 2,345,053, dated March` 28, 1944. Divided and this application July 22,

2 Claims. l
This application is a division of our application No. 467,224, led November 28, 1942, which issued as U. S. Patent No. 2,345,053 on March 28, 1944. Like that parent case, the object of this invention is to provide a nut of sheet material with eiective means for holding it in definite position on a support of wood or similar material, so that the nut may be readily attached to the support and immediately upon mounting be available for the reception of a threaded bolt or screw without requiring the application of a wrench to hold the nut.
In accomplishing the result we provide a body of sheet material with the bolt opening and embraced by a clip having bolt openings registering with the opening of the body and having a diverted edge about one of the clip openings to engage the thread of a bolt. The sheet metal body has bifurcated portions bent at right angles to the body to provide two pairs of attaching legs. The legs are comparatively narrow and for the most part parallel with each other and lie in the same plane in edge-to-edge alignment being spaced apart by an intermediate notch. The legs are long enough and of narrow enough width so that they may be bent outwardly in their own plane. their inner edges adjacent their free ends so that as they enter the wood or other support they will be caused to are or bend outwardly and thus obtain a rm hold on the support.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of our fastening device mounted in place in a wooden board and associated with a plate to be attached and a clamping screw; Fig. 2- is a longitudinal sectih through the fastening device applied to a wooden board; Fig. 3 is an end View of the parts shown in Fig. 2, sectioned through the board, as indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective of the two parts of the fastening device separated; Fig. 5 is a sectional perspective of the lower arm of the fastening clip.
The body portion of our fastener is made of a single piece of spring sheet metal and has an intermediate region I9 of considerable width narrowing toward each end. A bolt opening I2 is made in the wider part of this base in a region which is offset upwardly from the end portions.
At the ends of the base portion II, the metal is turned down at right angles and is intermediately notched to present at each end a pair of thin, narrow legs I5 parallel with each other and spaced apart and lying in the same plane. These legs are beveled inwardly at their lower ends as shown at I6, which causes the legs to (Cl. {i5-32) Furthermore, these legs are beveled on hare outwardly when driven into a piece of wood.
The thread carrying portion of the fastener is a sheet metal member 2l] doubled on itself to produce a lower arm having a bolt opening ZI and an upper arm carrying a diverted thread-engaging portion shown as a pair of tongues 22, on opposite sides of an opening 23, the tongues being notched at their edges at 24, and warped as in Fig. 1. The lower arm of the clip may have a projection 25 (Fig. 5) about the opening 2l to occupy the hole I2 of the body and lock the clip thereto.
The upper arm of the thread engaging member is preferably curved upwardly slightly at its free end as shown at 26. Just back of this free end the distance between the two arms is normally less than the thickness of the intermediate region of the leg-carrying member, so that the clip may snugly bind on the elevated intermediate region of the base.
In using the fastener of this invention, the thread carrying member is shoved laterally across the leg-carrying member. The open mouth of the doubled member readily receiving the edge of the raised intermediate region II, which cams the arms apart slightly and allows the thread carrying member to be readily slipped across the legcarrying member. In final position, the fold of the thread-carrying member abuts one edge of the leg-carrying member, while on the other side of the latter member the free edges of the two arms grip it so that the doubled member is held in place. In this position the lower arm of the doubled member lies between the two offset portions of the securing member and hence may not shift longitudinally.
Figs. 1 and 2 show the device of Fig. 4 in position on a wooden board A and a bolt opening a. The two legs I5 are apart in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The securing member is thus ,effectively held in position on the wooden board and holds the thread carrying member in registration with the bolt opening a. to receive the bolt without the necessity of any wrench applied to the nut.
Our fastener may be made economically from spring sheet steel by dies and bending tools. By forming the attaching legs from a narrow portion of the fastener body so that they stand comparatively close together, the two legs may be readily driven into the wood by the blow of a hammer against the body portion at the end of the legs without danger of distorting the body. When in place the spread legs firmly attach the fastener.
We claim:
1. A combined nut and mit holder comprising a nut holder provided from a strip of sheet metal dening a -body portion having a bolt opening, an offset portion on either side of the body portion dening spaced shoulders, attaching prongs defined by end portions of said strip projecting in the same general direction as said offset portions, and a nut carried by said body portion comprising bolt engaging means overlying the bolt4 open.- ing in said body portion and a nut retaining element underlying said body portion and engaging the spaced shoulders dened by said offset portions.
2. A combined nut and nut. holder comprising a nut holder provided from a stri-p .of sheet metaldefining a body portion having a bolt opening, an offset portion on either side of the body portion defining spaced shoulders, and pairs of attach- Aing prongs defined by end portions of said strip `inedrloy said offset portions.
