Patented Sept. 10, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GLUE CLAMPING DEVICE Robert H. Miller, Brisbane, Calif.
Application March 2, 1945, Serial No. 580,528
1 Claim. (Cl. 144-1-303) This invention relates to a clamp for glue clamping devices.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an adjustable clamp for use with the cusl tomary clamping bars.
A further object is to produce a clamp which may be re-sharpened from time to time so as to form the biting edges.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which may be used with any desired width of clamping bar.
A still further object is to produce a device which has a large bearing surface against the material being clamped.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, K
Fig. I is a top plan View of my invention as used with the customary clamping bars and compresser.
Fig. II is a side elevation of Fig. I.
Fig. III is an end elevation of Fig. I, looking from the left of the drawing.
Fig. 1V is an enlarged view of my clamp, looking from the compression side.
In glueing boards together it is customary to plane the edges, place glue thereon and then force the boards into tight contact with each other through the use of glue clamps. These glue clamps consist of a pair of parallel bars, one above and one below the boards, a movable gripping clamp engages the bars on one side of the boards and a compressing element on the opposite side of the boards, which will force the boards toward the clamp.
My invention is upon the clamp portion and is an improvement upon my Patent 2,359,235, of September 26, 1944.
In the accompanyng drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates an upperrclamping bar, the numeral 6 a lower clamping bar and the numeral 1 a compressing screw rotated by a handle 8 and bearing against a compression head 9, the screw passing through a block II and the head bearing against ing area, which will abut the board C, as in the drawing, and will not cause dents to appear in the board when the same is under compression. Each of these shoes I2 and I3 has divergent offset wings, as shown at I4 and I6 respectively, which wings are beveled, as shown at I5 and I'I respectively, so as to provide biting edges against the bars 5 and 6. The shoe I2 is provided with a slot I8, in which is pivoted a threaded member I9, which threaded member, in turn, threadedly engages a bore for-med in the shoe I3.
As a result of this construction the shoes I2 and I3 may be rotated with respect to each other, and through the threaded arrangement, the biting edges I5 and II. may be adjusted toward or away from each other, to accommodate the thickness of the bars being used. Also, this threaded arrangement permits the beveled edges to be `ground or re-sharpened from time to time, thus obviating the necessity of throwing the clamps away as soon as they become dull, o-r the necessity of having a large number of sets of clamps for different widths of bars.
When my clamp is placed between the bars, as shown in Figs. I and II, and pressure is applied through the compression head 9, the tendency of the two members to straighten out about their pivotal connection will cause the biting edges I5 and II to tightly grip the bars and prevent any possible slipping of the clamps.
It will thus be seen that al1 of the objects above set forth may be readily accomplished.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In an adjustable parallel beam clamp having pressure exerting means at one end and work abutment means at the other end, said abutment means comprising a pair of pressure shoes, means for pivoting said shoes one to the other, said pivoting means comprising a threaded member adjustably engaging one of said shoes and having pivotal connection with a pintle carried by the other of said shoes, and divergent wing members carried by each of said shoes, said divergent members of the respective shoes extending towards each other and each having beveled edges to provide a biting engagement with the parallel beam.
