CHARLES L. WOODBRIDGE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BUTTON AND.THE METHOD OAF ORNAMENTING THE SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,489, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed February 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. WOOD- BRIDGE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button and Method of Ornamenting the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to producein buttons of pearl, bone, or other suitable material, in a comparatively inexpensive manner, the effects or appearance ot' inlaid or inserted Work or figures.
The invention consists in cutting the pattern, gure, or design entirely through the button-blank, in then securing on `the back of the blank, with some suitable adhesive substance,
a piece of metal-foil, gilt, silvered, orotherwise colored paper, 85e., that shall be seen through the open pattern or design, land in then applying over the back of the button, hard and smooth, a coating of collodion, celluloid, as-
phalt, varnish, cement, or other suitable material.
Figurel is an enlarged plan ot' a button made by my process, with part broken away to exhibit other parts. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on line x Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In thedraWngs,A represents the button with .the design in figures a cut entirely through it.
B represents a piece of metallic foil or other 'suitable material, secured on the back of the button A with some adhesive substance, so as to cover the said design or gures a and be seen through them from the front, and C represents a coating of collodion, celluloid, varnish,
or other suitable substance, covering the back of said foil B, to prevent the edges of said foil or backing B from becoming broken or detached, and' to make the back of the button smooth and hard. The eyes b ofthe button A are pierced through the foil and coating B C.
Asseen from the front, the bright foil or colored paper B, seen through the open designs a, produces the effect, or has the appearance, of inlaid points or figures of metal or other bright substance, and as these open designs or patterns can be made of any shape, and as the backing can be of any desired color, many styles ot' buttons can thereby be produced.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The method of ornamenting buttons, substantially as herein described, which consists in cutting the pattern or figure through the button-blank, in then securing oh the back of the blank, over the said figures, with some adhesive substance, a suitable backing, such as foil, and in then applying to the back of the foil a coating of collodion, varnish, Celluloid, 0r other suitable substance, as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, abutton having a design ortgures cut through it, and having secured on its back, so as to be seen through the open design or figures, a suitable backing, such as foil, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES L. VOODBRIDGE.
