Bolt Fastening. No; 240,260. Patented April 19,1881.

EDWARD LESLIE, OF ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BOLT-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 10,260, dated April 19, 1881. Application filed September 10, 1880. (No model.) Patented in Canada August 23, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD LESLIE, of
' Orangeville, in the county of Wellington, in
' ened.
the Province of Ontario, Canada, gentleman, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Bolt-Fastenin gs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent the bolt-connection escaping from the bolt-hole, and thereby severing the connection of the parts, and also by adjustability to allow the bolt to be withdrawn, when required, to separate the parts connected, such as thill-couplings, 85c. and my invention consists of a device fixedly attachable to a portion of the vehicle near the bolt-head, and composed of a suitable plate having jaws which interpenetrate other jaws on the end of an arm whose opposite end rests in contact with the bolt-head, a latch-piece engaging with one of said jaws, and a cylindrical rubber spring, the whole secured operatively together by a pintle, whereby the latch-piece, when raised from its catch, compresses the spring and allows the arm to turn on the pintle clear of the bolt-head for the removal of the bolt when required.
Figure l is a perspective view of my fastener applied to a thill-coupling in latched position to hold the bolt. Fig. 2 is a like View, showing the same unlatched for withdrawal of the bolt. The other figures show the parts detached.
A is the plate, of any suitable form adapted to the place of application, and fixed thereto by screws or other fastenings, the location being near the head of the bolt to be fast- The plate A is constructed with fixed jaws a a, having holes through which to pass a pintle.
B is an arm, constructed at one end with jaws b b, the other end terminating in a swell, c, which opposes the bolt-head.
O is an elbow-latch, and D a cylindrical rubber spring.
The jaws a a and b b have the same intervenin g space, and when overlapped are hinged together by a pintle or pin, d, which also passes through one arm of the latch and rubber cylinder longitudinally, the latter being placed between one of the jaws a, and the arm of the latch-piece within one of the jaws b, the other jaw I) having a recess, 6, which receives one arm of the latch O, which latter also has notch f to catch with the recess 6 when the arm is in contact with the bolt-head. The resiliency of the rubber springs keeps both parts in latched contact, whereby the arm B will be rigidly held to oppose the escape of the thillbolt E. The latch-piece 0 projects over the jaw, and forms a hold for the thumb and tinger to lift the latch out of engagement with its catch on thejaw b, whereby the arm B can be swung clear of the bolt-head to allow the bolt to be withdrawn when required. The latchpiece being elbow-shaped, when the catchend is raised to release the bolt, as before de scribed, the other end acts as a lever on the rubber spring to compress it, the expansion of the spring keeping the latch and catch in engagement for securing the bolt, as previously described.
I claim as my invention 1. A bolt-fastening device consistin g of the combination of plate A, having jaws a a, arm B, having jaws b b, elbow-latch 0, and spring D, operatively connected by pintle d, in the.
manner andfor the purpose set forth.
2. The latch O and spring D, in combination with the arm B, havingjaws b b, and plate A, having jaws a a, pintled together, as set forth.
. EDWARD LESLIE.
