CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,238, dated April 19,1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. DOUGH- ERTY, of Carbondale, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Oouplin gs, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation taken through the line .10 m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the coupling-pin.
' The object of this invention is to furnish car-couplings so constructed that cars of the same height and of different heights can be coupled automatically as the cars are run together.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the bumper-heads, the mouth of which are made hopper-shaped in the ordinary manner, to guide the coupling-link B into place as the cars are run together. The upper and lower sides,0,of the cavities of the bumper-heads A are inclined or curved, as shown in Fig. 1, to guide the coupling-link B into place when coupling cars of different heights.
D are the couplingpins, which pass down through holes in the bumper-heads A near their forward ends. Upon the upper ends of the coupling pins D are formed cross heads E, the arms of which rest in grooves in the upper sides of the bumper-heads A,'so that the lower ends of the said coupling-pins D can swing inward to allow the entering-links O to push the lower ends of the said couplingpins D back and pass them when the cars are run together.
Upon the upper end of the coupling-pin D is formed a short upwardly-projecting point or arm,F, to serve as a handle, for convenience in withdrawing the said coupling-pin to uncouple the cars. The inner surfaces of the upper and lower sides of the cavity of each bumper-head A are grooved in the rear of the coupling-pin D, to allow the lower end of the said coupling-pin to swing back, so that the end of the coupling-link B can push back Application filed September 4, 1880.

G is a pin which is inserted in a hole in the rear of the coupling-pin D in each bumperhead A. I11 the forward side of each pinG are formed three notches, H, to receive the end of the coupling-link B, and support the outer end of the said link in position to enter the bumper-head of an adjacent car when the cars are run together. The middle notch of the pin G is used when the adjacent cars are of the same height. The lower notch is used when a lower car is to be coupled with a higher car, and the upper notch when a higher car is to be coupled with a lower car. The pin G has a collar or shoulder, I, formed upon it, to rest upon the top of the bumper-head A and thus'support the. said pin in place.
To the upper end of each of the holdingpins G is attached the end of a short chain, J, the other end of which is attached to the bum per-head A, to prevent the said pins G from being lost when withdrawn from the said bumper-heads A.
The pin G of the car to be coupled with the car carrying the coupling-link B must be withdrawn when the cars are to be coupled, to allow the coupling-pin D to be pushed back by the entering-link B. When-the cars are coupled one or both the holding-pins G must be withdrawn to give the link B the necessary play.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A coupling-pin for cars having the body D, arms E E, and projection F, as shown and described.
