- This invention relates to separable fasteners of the type employing stringers with sliders movable along the stringers toecouple and uncouple the same. More particularly, the invention relates to the construction of fasteners of the class described wherein the stringers are arranged and adapted to be coupled in what may be termed side by side relationship, rather than the conventional edge to edge relationship, so that the Stringer tapes or other mountings are coupled in such a way that their edges are in registration and the body portions of the mounting members extend in substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from such edges.

8 Claims. `(Cl. 24-205) 1 This invention relates to separable fasteners of the type employing stringers with sliders movable along the stringers toecouple and uncouple the same. More particularly, the invention relates to the construction of fasteners of the class described wherein the stringers are arranged and adapted to be coupled in what may be termed side by side relationship, rather than the conventional edge to edge relationship, so that the Stringer tapes or other mountings are coupled in such a way that their edges are in registration and the body portions of the mounting members extend in substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from such edges.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views; and in which Fig. l is a perspective view, showing a pair of mountings, arranged in accordance with the invention, with links spaced thereon and coupled and uncoupled by a slider movable along said mountings;

Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3'3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view yillustrating the method of forming the links or scoops on the tapes or other mountings.
In the preferred form of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, two scoop or fastener mounting membersV I0, Iii', which may be conventional tapes,y are shown arranged in what is referred to above as side by side relationship, that E to say, with their outer edges or bead portions i3, i3' in registration and with their body portions extending in substantially.
parallel relationship inthe same direction from such edges. Sets of appropriately formed scoops Il, ii are secured to the respective mounting members with provision on the proximate faces of the tapes for coupling. one set of scoops with the other. The specific form of scoop shown for purposes of illustration is the' subject of a divisional application, Serial No. 572,643, led Januaryl, 1945.
All the scoops on eachtape are of identical form, each being substantially U-shaped in this instance to embrace both the tape bead'and the opposite sides of the tape adjacentandv inwardly of thebead. Also, each scoop in this instance is of the same form on the outer as well as on the inner face of each tape, as appears in Figs. 2 and 3.
The upper and lower faces I9, I9 of the scoops are fiat throughout the length of the scoops except for the upwardly and downwardly projected enlargements I 8, I8 which constitute male coupling portions; and immediately behind the male coupling portions, i. e. between them and the adjacent face of the tape, is an aperture or female coupling recess Il, I l' which extends clear across the scoop (from top to bottom as viewed in Fig. 1). As will be understood, the stringers are securely .interlocked against separation in any direction when the male coupling portions I8 of scoops II (on the side of tape I0 proximate to tape Ili') .are entered into the recesses I1 of scoops I i', as shown in Fig. 3. At the same time, of course, and as also shown in Fig. 3, the male coupling portions I8 of the scoops of tape I0 are entered into the recesses Il of the scoops of tape I0.
In order to couple and uncouple the scoops of mounting members arranged in the manner described, there is provided a slider having what may be termed a generally U-shaped cross-section (Fig. 2) adapting it to embrace both of the tape edges and the scoop members thereon. In longitudinal section in a plane normal to the tapes (Fig. 3) the slider is substantially Y-shaped,
incorporating a single channel for the coupled stringers and diverging channels to couple and uncouple' the scoops, both the single channel and the diverging channels opening on the same side of the slider body.
Such a slider, generally designated 2 l, is shown in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing. It includes side walls 22, 22', which may be roughened as at 2l, 2l' to provide a good nger grip, and inturned flange portions 23, 23 for engagement with the ends of the scoops remote from the tapeedges on vthe outer sides of the tapes. At its wideend the slider has a more or less conventional web portion 25 (Fig. 3) which forms the diverging channels 26, 21 through which the scoops pass during coupling and uncoupling. A
As above stated, each scoop is of the same form on both sides of its mounting member: and while with the tapes arranged in the described side by side relationship this results in the coupling portions on the remote sides of the tapes remaining idle so far as actual interlocking ot the tapes is concerned, the scoop portions on the remote faces of the tapes do provide a rlmning support for the slider and, by t with its inturned flanges 23, 23', secure it against lateral movement 'or removal. Also, it will be recognized, this form of scoop has the advantage ofv permitting the slider and stringers to be assembled -in the described relatonship without requiring one particular side of one mounting member to be located facing a particular side of the other mounting member; that is, the stringers are reversible.

In the light of the foregoing description, the following is claimed:
1. The combination with a pair of scoop mounting members arranged with their outer edges in registration and extending in substaning it to embrace the scoops of both mounting members.
4. The combination with a pair of scoop mounting members arranged with their outer edges in registration and extending in substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from such edges, and scoops arranged on the proximate faces of such members adjacent their said outer edges, of a slider to couple and uncouple the scoo'ps having a substantially U-shaped section adapting it to embrace the said outer edges and the remote faces of the mounting members,
5. The combination with a pair of scoop mounting members arranged with their outer edges in registration and extending in substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from such edgeaand scoops arranged on such members tially parallel relationship in the same direction Y of the mounting members, the portions of' the scoops on the proximate faces of the members having provision for coupling engagement of the one set of scoops with the other, and a slider open at one side only, adapting it to embrace both of said edges and the scoops thereon, and arranged to slide, in coupling and uncoupling the scoops, on the portions of the scoops on the remote faces of the mounting members.
2. The combination with a pair of scoop mounting members arranged with their outer edges in registration and extending in substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from such edges, and scoops arranged on such members adjacent their said outer edges, of a slider having a common channel and a mouth therefor on one side only of the slider to receive both sets of scoops in coupled relationship, and separate channels, with separate mouths, diverging from the common channel to receive and guide the individual sets of scoops in coupling and uncoupling the same.
3. The combination with a. pair of scoop mounting members arranged with their outer edges in registration and extending in substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from said edges. and scoops arranged on such members adjacent their said outer edges, and with interlocking members on proximate faces of the scoops, ol a slider movable longitudinally of such edges in coupling and uncoupling the scoops andV havadjacent their said outer edges, of a slider having an opening on one side only to receive and slide along the said edges in coupling and uncoupling the scoops'.
6. For the coupling and uncoupling of stringers arranged as described, a slider having a Y-shaped longitudinal section embodying a channel portion and two branch channels diverging therefrom, side walls closing the outer sides both of the channel portion and of the said two branch channels, and a Y-shaped lateral opening providing access for stringers to the said channel portion and branch channels.

The combination with a pair of scoop mounting members arranged with their outer edges in registration and extending in` substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from said edges, and scoops arranged on such members adjacent their said outer edges, and with interlocking members on proximate faces of the scoops, o! a slider movable longitudinally oi' such'edges in coupling and uncoupling the scoops and having a substantially U-shaped cross-section adapting it to embrace the scoops of both mounting members, and means on the remote faces'of the said scoop mounting members aiiording sliding support for the slider during movement thereof during coupling and uncoupling of the interlocking members.
8. The combination of a pair oi' scoop mountv ing members arranged with their outer edges in registration and extending in substantially parallel relationship in the same direction from such edges, scoops spaced longitudinally of said members and having coupling portions on the proxi- ,4 mate facesof the members, each coupling por-V tion having on both the upper and lower sides thereof both male andrfemale coupling elements, the male couplings lof a scoop on one member engaging female couplings of adjacent scoops of the other member, and a U-shaped slider body movable along and enveloping the scoops of both members in` coupling and uncoupling the same.
