JAMES BURBRIDGE, ROBERT C. THORPE, AND THOMAS OAKLEY, OF TOT- TENHAM, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
SYRlNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,086, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed December 30, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMns BUEBEIDGE, ROBERT CUREToN THOEPE, and THoMAs OAK- LEY, all of Tottenham, in the county of MiddleseX, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Syringes, ot' which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to dispense 1o with the use of valves of metal or similar ma enema or syringe embodying our invention.
Fig. 2 represents a section oi' the end of the suction-tube and the suction-valve at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a side view of the discharge-valve, taken at right angles 3c to Fig. 1. Fig. lrepresents a side view of part of the syringe or enema; and Fig. 5 represents a core or device used in the manufacture, as hereinafter explained.
Similar letters of reference designate corre- 3 5 spending parts in the several figures.
ln the drawings, a designates the ball, reservoir, or pump of the enema or syringe; b designates the suction-tube, and d the discharge-tube, all of which parts are formed of 4o india-rubber by the processes commonly used in the manufacture of such articles.
The ball, reservoir, or pump a., which may be of any size or shape before it is vulcanized, has socket-pieces c, ot' hard-rubber compound inserted in its ends. A screw-threaded plug, d', (see Fig. 4,) is then screwed into each socket piece and the parts vulcanized. f
The inner ends of the tubes b and a are provided with ttings, e, which, when the screw- 5o plugs d are removed, are screwed into the socket-pieces c. The nozzle j' is also formed of hard-rubber compound, and is inserted into Patented in England May 5, 1880, and in France September 16, 1880.
the outer end of the. deliverytube previous to vulcanization.
So far as described our syringe or enema is not of-novel construction, but its novelty consists inthe manner ot' forming the valves.
The suction-valve b4 is formed by turning in the end ot' the suction-tube b, as seen in Figs. l and 2, thus forming a collapsible por- 63 tion, and inserting therein a tlat Wedge-shaped piece or core, b3, (shown in Figure 5,) to give said portion a ilattened form. The insertion of the core b3 tends to elongate the turned-in end of the suction-tube, and thus reduces the thicknessof the rubber at that part. The valve Will thus take somewhat the shape ot' what is known to anatoinists as a mitral valve. The end of the tube I), wherein is the suction-valve b4, is enlarged, as shown in Fig. l, to provide 7o lateral space for the working of the valve.
The delivery-valve c is formed by simply `conipressing or flattening the delivery-tube d' while in the plastic state land before vulcanizpassage of liquid outward it will collapse and' prevent air from being drawn into the ball or pump ay during its expansion? lt will be understood that all the littings are added to the tubes, and both valves are formed 8o therein while the material is in a plastic state and before the tubes are vulcanized, and hence the valves by vulcanizin g are given a permanent set.
The ball or pump c and the suction and delivery tubes may be formed in one continuous piece, and notof separate pieces, as here shown; but the valves are always to be formed in the manner described.
What we claim as our invention, and desire 9o to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A syringe having exible tubes, and having its valve or valves composed ot flat-tened and collapsible portions of the sides of said tubes, substantially as specified.
Dated the 30th day of November, 1880.
