SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,080, dated April 12, 1881. Application filed March 18, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. ALFRED BERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddles for Stacks or Spark-Arresters and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth- IO ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to saddles for sparkarresters, and the object is to improve the construction of such saddles.
The invention consists in constructing a saddle in such a manner that the part in which are arranged the inclined guides by which the sparks, 850., are conveyed into the connectingpipes which connect with the return-fines can be easily detached and replaced when worn out by a new one. The rings to which the bar- 2 5 rels of the stack are attached are secured to this saddle.
It also consists, as a modification, in arranging the inclined guides in the saddle on the inside of the smoke-arch instead of on the out- 0 side or above it, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my improved saddle. Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a modification of the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical section at right angles of the 0 modification.
In the drawings, A is the lower part or base of the saddle, secured, by suitable flanges, to the boiler above the smoke-arch, and having the inclined guides I) b for conveying the sparks, 850., into the connecting-pipes E, that 5 connect with the return-fines. To the upper end of the base the rings B C are secured, and to them, the inner and outer barrels (shown in dotted lines) of the smoke-stack are attached.
As a modification of this construction the guides 11 b may be arranged in a base forming a pocket, D, which depends into the smokearch, and, having suitable flanges, is bolted on the inside of said arch. Saidguides communicate with the space 0 of the base of the saddle. The lower end of the pocket is provided with suitable flanges d d, to which the connecting-pipes E, which connect with the return-fines, are attached. It will be thus seen that this part of the saddle is easily remova ble, and can be readily detached when worn out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A saddle for spark-arresters, provided with a detach able base having inclined guides, arranged substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
2. A saddle for spark-arresters, having a base made to be easily detached from the smoke-stack and boiler, and provided with inclined guides for conveying sparks, 850., into the connecting-pipes, substantially as set forth.
3. The saddle for spark-arresters herein described, consisting of the detachable base A, provided with inclined guides b b, in combination with the rings B C and inner and outer barrels of a smoke-stack, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
