3 Claims.
The invention refers to a rest room for vehicles especially rail cars.
More particularly the invention is concerned with the arrangement of the entrance doors for two narrow elongated compartments such as toilets, individual wash rooms or the like which are together arranged generally in the shape of an L.
It is an object of the invention to permit the aforesaid arrangement without requiring undue space for the doors which would impede the of about equal size and form. are arranged near the short end wall of these compartments remote from the partition wall structure 20,2l,22.
The compartment 23 is accessible through a door opening 26 provided in the arm 2!. This openingis closed by a door 21 swingably attached arrangement of other accessories such as wash basins or the sitting space in the rest room.
The objects of the invention are mainly achieved by the new arrangement and formation of the partition between the two compartments and by the arrangement of the doors, all of which will be more clearly understood from the attached drawing of an embodiment of the invention and from. the following description of such embodiment. r
The drawing is a diagrammatic, fragmentary plan View of one end of a passenger rail car.
I and 2 are the side walls of the illustrated .rail car; 3 is the end Wall and 4 a partition wall which separates the interior of the car from the vestibule 5.. The wall 4 is provided in bustomary fashion with a central door 6. Adjacent I the wall 4 and along the side wall 2 'is arranged the rest room 1. This room is formed by aportion of the side wall 2, a portion of the end wall 4 and partition walls 8, 9 I and H. These partition walls leave an aisle 12 between them and the end wall 4, the side wall I and another partition wall [3, l4; this aisle connects the vestibule 5 with the passenger compartment [5. The
rest room '1 communicates with the side aisle l2 through a door opening l6 and the interior of the rest room may be shielded by a short partition wall I! arranged next to this opening.
A portion of the rest room 1 is partitioned off by transverse walls l8, l9 which are spaced from and extend parallel to the partition wall 9. The partition wall l8 which adjoins the aisle wall It is longer than the partition wall I 9 adjoining the outer wall2. Inserted between the ends of the walls l8, l9 and the transverse partition wall 9 is a wall structure 29, 2|, 22 which is Y or V shaped in plan View. The arms 2|, 22 of the Y or V are attached respectively to the ends of the walls l8, l9, and the end of the'shank 20 of the Y or the apex of the V is connected to the wall 9 in a region near to but spaced from the intersection with the wall 8. This arrangement results in two toilet compartments 23 and 24 near the shank 20 of the Y-shaped partition wall structure. The compartment 24 is accessible through a door opening 28 closable by a door 29. The door 29 is however, hinged to the wall 22 near the partition wall I 9.
The described arrangement of the Walls, of the door openings and of the hingings of the doors permits easy entry of the compartments 23 and 24 and the easy closing of the doors by persons in the interior of one of these compartments. A small portion only of the wall space of the main portion of the rest room is required for giving access to the compartments 23 and 24, and the arrangement is such that a wash basin 30 may be provided in the corner formed by the walls 2 and I9. Other rest room facilities such as basins 3!, chairs 32 or a sofa may be arranged as desired. 7
The described arrangement provides, also for ample closet space which is important when the car is sleeper-coach or lounge. One closet 33 is formed by the partition wall 8 and the adjoining portions of the transverse walls 4 and 9 in the space betweensaid wall 8 and the door 6. Another large closet 34 is formed by a portion of the wall 2 and the walls H and M. A third closet 35 or drinking water fountain may be arranged in the corner between the side wall I and the partition wall l3.
Itwill be understood that the invention is liable to many modifications and can be adapted to different specific arrangements and requirements. All such adaptations and modifications are intended to be covered by the attached claims.
Whatis claimed is:
1. Ina vehicle; two narrow elongated compartments arranged together in the general form of an L; two wall portions se arating said comnartments from each other, diverging from about the intersection of the inner walls of the L and including acute angles with the direction'of the short arm of the'L; a pair of doors. one door forming at least partly one of said wall portions and the other door forming at least partly the other of said wall portions; the one door being hingedly attached near or at said intersection for swinging movement into the interior of the compartment constituting the long arm of the L;
The hoppers 25 the other door being hingedly attached at a distance from said intersection for swinging movement into the interior of the compartment forming the short arm of the L.
2. In a vehicle; two narrow elongated compartments arranged together in the general form Of an L; two wall portions separating said compartments from each other, diverging from about the intersection of the inner walls of the L and including acute angles with each other and the direction of the short arm of the L; a pair of doors of which one forms at least partly one of and the other door the other of said wall portions; the one door being hingedly attached near or at said intersection for swinging movement into the interior of the compartment constituting the long arm of the L; the other door being hingedly attached at a distance from said intersection for swinging movement into the interior of the compartment forming the short arm of the L.
3. In a vehicle; two narrow elongated compartments arranged together in the general form of an L; two wall portions separating said compartments from each other, diverging from a region spaced a short distance in the direction toward the long arm of the L from the intersection of the inner walls of the L and including acute angles of similar size with the short arm of the L; one door forming at least partly one of said wall portions and a second door forming at least partly the other oneof said wa11 portions; the one door being hingedly attached near or at said region for swinging movement into the interior of the compartment constituting the long arm of the L; the other door being hingedly attached at a distance from said intersection for swinging movements into the interior of the compartment forming the short arm of the L.
