UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ISAIAH NEWELL, OF HAVERHILL, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND news '1.
STEVENS, OF NORTH ANDOVEB, MASSACHUSETTS.
BURR-C' ONVEYER FOR CARDlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 239,977, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed August 19, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAIAH NEWELL, of Haverhill, of .the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burr-Oonveyers for Oarding-lliachines; and I do hereb declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of the main operative parts of a carding-machine provided with my invention, the nature of which is duly set forth in the claim hereinafter presented. Fig. 4. is hereinafter described.
In such drawings, A denotes the main cardcylinder,B the endless feeding-apron, O and D the feed-rollers, E the burr-cylinder, F the burr-cylinder stripper, G the tumbler, and H the burr-guard, of a common carding-engine, they being supposed to be constructed and arranged in the usual manner, and all of them, except the guard, to be provided with gears or mechanism for properly operating them.
In carrying out my invention I have combined with the carding'machine having such characteristics an endless discharging-apron,
I, arranged directly upon the lower or horizontal part, a, of the guard H, in manner as represented particularly in Fig. 4, which is a longitudinal section of such guard, and the (No model.)
apron and its sustaining-rolls K K. The shaft of one of such rollers is to be provided with a crank, M, or some other suitable means of putting it in revolution, in order for the endless apron to be moved longitudinally, so as to carry off and discharge such burrs and waste matters as may be thrown upon it by the burrcylinder stripper F while the carding-machine may be in operation. The curved lip b of the guard operates to prevent such burrs from being thrown upon the feedingapron B.
The discharging-apron I saves the necessity of an attendant frequently brushing or wiping from the guard any burrs or foreign matters that may accumulate upon it, they, by the endless discharger, being intercepted and carried off and discharged from the machine.
I claim as my invention as follows:
The combination of the endless discharger or apron I, having means of operating it, as
described, with the main card-cylinder A, feedapron B, feed-rollers Oand D, burr-cylinder E, burr-cylinder stripper F, tumbler G, and burr-guard H of the carding-machine, the said discharger I being arranged with the said burr-guard, substantially in manner and to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
ISAIAH NEWELL. Witnesses:
JEREMIAH UNDERHILL, N ATHL. STEVENS.
