Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,990, dated May 10, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS REBE'rny, of the city of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for the Manufacture of Firearms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and. exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon.

In the manufacture of a certain kind of pistol, it is desirable, to have a recess, in the side plate thereof, finished smooth, on all its surfaces, and of uniform figure, so that the side plate of one pistol, will answer for any other, of same description. This result can not be well accomplished by hand tools, and the nature of my invention, consists in the use of a frame, in which, any successive number of side plates, may be regularly adjusted, and a uniform recess cut in each, by means of a revolving cutter, guided by the outlines of a figure or profile in one plate of such frame.

To enable others to comprehend and-use my invention, I describe its operation.

A B C D Figure 1, represents, an elevation, and C D Fig. 2, a view of upper plate, and A B Fig. 3, of bottom plate of a frame, to hold the side plate of a cylinder pistol, for the purpose of finishing a recess therein.

The upper plate C D, of frame Fig. 2 has an opening E F in it, shaped like the recess to be finished in the side plate.

p The side plate G H Fig. 4, of pistol has a rough recess E F cast 1n it, which may be finished smooth, by fastening such side plate G H as seen in Fig. 1, by means of the screw I so that the rough recess, will coincide with the profile E F, in the upper plate C D of frame Fig. 2.

K Fi 3 represents the head of screw I, Fig. 1, which is operated by a wrench introduced through the circular opening in bottom plate of frame.

If the frame Fig. 1, containing the side plate G H, be placed on the bed L of a drill press and the spindle M, carrying the cutter N (two views of the cutter being shown in Figs. 5 and 6) be revolved rapidly, and the bed L of drill press be elevated, by the rack O and pinion P, so that the fiat face R of cutter I will press against the flat surface of recess E F in side plate, G H, and the frame, A B C D, be moved, about, on the bed L of drill press, governed by the shank S of cutter N, bearing against the outlines of profile E F, in upper plate of frame the rough edges of recess in side plate, will be smoothed by the teeth on periphery of cutter N and the flat surface of recess, will be smoothed by the teeth on fiat face of cutter, in a uniform and expeditious manner.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The use of a frame, constructed as herein described, having a profile in one plate of it, to shape and finish a corresponding recess in the side plate of a pistol, by means of a revolving cutter, governed by the outlines of such profile.
