W. VO GEL.
Automatic Electric Gas Lighting Apparatus.
No. 239,896. Patented April 5,1881.
I JWNM/MMMNWVWMMMANWVWI mmmmml UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILHELM VOGEll, OF FREIBURG, BADEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM OF S. DUKAS, OF SAME PLACE.
AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC GAS-LIGHTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,896, dated April 5, 1881.
Application filed November 16, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILHELMVOGEL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Freiburg, Baden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas-Lighting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and economical apparatus for automatically turning on the supply of gas to any number of burners and simultaneously lighting the gas-jets by electricity. This object I attain in the manner which 1 will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved gaslighting apparatus with the outside casing in section; Fig. 2, a corresponding side view, and Fig. 3 a vertical section.
A is the gas-tube, bent as shown in Fig. 3, provided at its upper on d with the usual burner B, and threaded at its lower end for attachment to a suitable gas-bracket or chandelier. This tube is provided with a four-way cock, 7r, the stem of which carries on the outside a ratchet-wheel, r, Fig. 2, having eight teeth.
Secured to a projection on the tube A is an -clectro-magnet, E, insulated from the tube,
and resting on one edge of the poles is an armature, g, which, when the electric circuit is not closed, is kept raised by means of a spring, It, as shown in Fig. 2.
To the outer end ot'the armature,at one side, is pivoted a pawl, t', which engages with the teeth of the wheel r under the action of a spring, l. To the outer end of the armature, g, on the other side, is pivoted a rod, n, connected to an arm on a cock, l, adapted to a conical seat in an enlarged part of the tube A, above the cock k, the cock l being held to its seat by a spring, 19. This cock is provided with an opening communicating with the interiorof the tube A, and also with an outlet, 1n, within a short distance of the burner. About this outlet m is arranged a piece of platinum wire, a, communicating through the wire I), coils c d e of the electro-magnet, and wire f with a suitable battery capable of making the platinum wire red hot, the circuit being completed through the gas-tube A and pipes.
The devices are preferably inclosed in a removable casing, VI.
Supposing the cook to be in such a position as to cut oft the supply of gas from the burner and it is desired to light the gas, the electric circuit is then closed. This will have the effect of attracting the armature g, drawing with it the pawl i, which will thus turn the cock k an eighth of a revolution and open the communication to the burner. At the same time the cock l is so turned, through the medium of the arm n, as to open the communication with outlet m, so that the gas, escaping through this opening and coming into contact with the platinum wire a, which has been made red hot by the electrical current, ignites, and the flame thus formed, passingoutthrough an opening in the casing, ignites the gas at the burner B. The circuit being then broken, the armature released is raised by the spring, the cock lclosed, and the pawl 6 moves to the next tooth, so that by closing the circuit again the cock It will be turned so as to cut 011' the gas supply and so extinguish the light. By this means any number of gas'burncrs may be lighted from a central station.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of the gas-burner, electro-magnet, armature, and electric circuit with a rotary cock, I, having an arm and a rod, a, connecting it with the armature, an outlet, m, adjacent to the burner, and a platinum wire in the circuit opposite said outlet, as set forth.
2. The combination of the gas-burner, electro-magnet, armature, and electric circuit with cock 7t, its ratchet-wheel and spring-pawl connected to the armature, and the cock 1, adapted to be operated by said armature, and having an outlet, m, adjacent to the burner, and a platinum wire in the electric circuit opposite said opening, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILHELM VOGEL.
Witnesses JOSEPH MAYER, EMIL PISCHINGER.
