Description

This invention relates to improvements in toys.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a whirling toy in which a rotary motion is imparted to the driven or actuated element by means of an oscillating lever-like actuating member.
Second, to provide a toy which may be provided with a pistol grip and with a trigger-like actuat ing element, the actuation of which imparts a rotary motion to the driven or actuated element.
Third, to provide a toy in which reciprocatory motion is applied to rotate a driving wheel which when driven in one direction coacts with s. driven wheel and when driven in the opposite direction is disengaged therefrom.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation, a. portion of one side member constituting the body oi' the toy being broken away.

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, the body is formed of complementary side members I, I coacting to provide a chamber for the various operating parts. The body has a fowardly tapered vertical ribbed barrel portion 2, a wheel housing portion 3 at the rear thereof, and a pistol grip portion l.
A shaft 5 is supported in bearing 6 at the front end of the body and in complementary bearing members l projecting inwardly from the side members, these supporting the shaft adjacent the rear end thereof. The actuated member 8 in the embodiment illustrated is in the form of a blade to simulate the propeller. It will be understood that this may be variously shaped. At its rear end the shaft 6 is provided with a. driven wheel or pinion 9 which may have a smooth face but is preferably serrated or toothed as illustrated at 9 I.
The disk-like driving wheel I0, which preferably has an annular serrated or toothed portion IUI on the side thereof facing the wheel 9 to coact therewith, is provided with a spindle II having a conical pivot Journal I2 at one end and a head or shoe-like slidable journal 3 at the other end.
One side member is provided with an inwardly projecting boss-like bearing portion I4 having a conical bearing recess I5 in its inner end of such dimensions as to permit tilting movement of the pivot journal therein. The other side member has an elongated recess-like bearing IB for the shoe-like journal I3, the elongation being longitudinally relative to the shaft 5. The pivot axis of the driving Wheel preferably lies in the plane of this shaft but transversely thereto.
The actuating lever I1 is pivoted at I8 to project from the body of the toy and has a forwardly curved finger grip portion I9 positioned relative to the grip 4 so that the lever may be manipulated with the foreilnger of the hand gripping the grip.
The actuating cord 2Il is connected at one end to the free end of the retracting spring 2l anchored at 22, the cord being wrapped around th'e spindle II between the shoe-like journal thereof and the wheel and connected to the inner end of the actuating lever Il.
With the parts thus arranged, when the actuating member I I is actuated by pulling on its projecting end as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, the driving wheel is not only rotated but it is tilted into driving engagement with the driven wheel 9 on the shaft 5. However. when the trigger is released or pressure thereon sufficiently relaxed, the spring 2| retracts the cord, returning the lever to its initial position. 'I'his retraction drives the driving wheel in the opposite direction but as it also shifts it out of disengagement with the driven wheel, the driven element is not reversed and the actuating member may be actuated with surlicient frequency to keep the driven element in rapid rotation, the momentum being sufficient to keep the element in motion during th'e return stroke. The pivot mounting I8 for the actuating member and the anchoring pin 22 for the spring preferably constitute means for connecting the side members. Additional connecting screws may be provided as indicated at 23.
With the parts thus arranged there is little likelihood of injury thereto, even by careless or unskilled manipulation. The parts are simple and economical, and easily assembled. It Will be apparent of course that the design and shape of the body may be greatly varied according to the object which' it is desired to simulate.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the embodiments of these adaptations as it is believed the disclosure ,fmade will Yenable those skilled in the yart to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a toy, the combination of a body comprising complemental side members 4enacting to provide a chambered body including a grip, a shaft disposed longitudinally within the body to project from the forward en-d thereof, a driven blade element on the forward end of said shaft, a serrated driven wheel on the rear end of said shaft, a driving wheel disposed at the rear of said shaft and having an annular serrated portion on the side thereof adjacent said wheel to coact therewith, a supporting and driving spindle for said wheel having a pivot journal at one end thereof and` a slidable journal at the other end thereof, one side member having an inwardly projecting bearing provided with a conical bearing recess coacting with the said pivot journal of said spinle, the other side member having an elongated bearing recess rotatably and slidahly supporting the other journal of the spindle whereby the driving wheel is supported for limited axial tilting movement to permit its swinging into and out of side engagement with the said driven wheel on said shaft, a pivoted trigger-like actuating meinber extending into said body and projecting therefrom in operative relation to said grip, a spring disposed in said grip and connected thereto at one end, and a cord connected to the free end of said spring, the other end of the cord being connected to the inner end of said actuating member, said cord being wrapped around said driving wheel spindle whereby the driving wheel is rotated and canted on its pivot into driving engagement with said driven wheel on said shaft on the actuation of said actuating member, said spring acting to retract said cord and to tilt the driving wheel out of engagement with said driven wheel on the retracting movement of the cord.
2. In a toy, the combination of a body comprlsingicomplemental side members coacting to provide a chambered body including a grip, a shaft disposed longitudinally within the body to project from the forward end thereof, a driven blade element on the forward end of said shaft, a driving wheel disposed at the rear of said shaft, a supporting and driving spindle for said wheel having a tilting pivot journal at one end thereof and a slidably supported journal at the other end thereof, a pivoted trigger-like actuating member extending into said body and projecting therefrom in operative relation to said grip, a spring disposed in said grip and connected thereto at one end, and a cord connected to the free end of said spring, the other end of the cord being connected to the inner end of said actuating member, said cord being wrapped around said driving wheel spindle whereby the driving wheel is rotated and canted onits pivot into driving engagement with said driven wheel onA said shaft on the actuation of said actuating member, said spring acting to retract said cord and to tilt the driving wheel out of engagement with said driven wheel on the retracting movement of the cord.
3. In a toy, the combination of a body comprising complemental side members coacting to provide a chambered body including a grip, a shaft disposed longitudinally within the body to project from the forward end thereof, a driven element on the forward end of said shaft, a driven wheel on the rear end pf `said shaft, a driving wheel, a supporting and'driving espindle for said wheel having a pivot journal at one end thereof and a slidable journal at the other end thereof, one side member having an inwardly projecting bearing provided with a conical bearing recess coacting with the said pivot journal of said spindle., the other side member having an elongated bearing recess rotatably and slidably supporting the other journal of the spindle whereby the driving wheel is supported for limited axial tilting movement to permit its swinging into and out of side engagement with the said driven wheel on said shaft, a pivoted actuating member extending into said body and projecting therefrom in operative relation to said grip, a cord connected to the inner end of said actuating member, and a retracting spring for said cord, said cord being wrapped around said driving wheel spindle whereby the driving wheel is rotated and canted on its pivot into driving engagement with said driven wheel on said shaft on the actuation of said actuating member, said spring acting to retract said cord and to tilt the driving Wheel out of engagement with said driven Wheel on the retracting movement of the cord.

5. In a toy, the combination of a. chambered body provided with a grip, a shaft projecting from said body, a rotating element on the projecting end of said shaft, said shaft being provided with a driven member at its inner end, a driving wheel mounted for limited tilting movement whereby it may be moved into and out of driving engagement with said driven member on said shaft, a pivoted actuating lever operatively positioned relative to said grip, a cord connected at one end to said actuating lever and operatively associated with said driving wheel for-rotating the same, and a retracting spring for said cord, said driving wheel being swung into driving engagement with said driven member onsaid shaft on the actuation of Said actuating ieverand disengaged therefrom on` the retracting movement of said cord.,

7. In a toy, the combination of a chambered body, a shaft projecting from said body, a rotating element on the projecting end of said shaft, said shaft being provided with a driven member at its inner end, a driving wheel mounted for limited tilting movement whereby it may be moved into and out of driving engagement with said driven member on said shaft, an actuated member, a cord connected to said actuated member and operatively associated with said driving wheel for rotating the same, and a retracting spring for said cord, said driving wheel being engaged with said driven member on said shaft on the actuation of said actuated member and disengaged therefrom on the retracting movement of said cord.
