UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT P. ODELL, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO E. H. BARNUM, OF SAME PLACE.
LAM P-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,830, dated April 5, 1881. I
" Application filed February 17, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. ODELL, of Bradford,.in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lamp-burners, and is intended as an improvement upon the patent granted to me January 11, 1881; and it consists in the combination of -a lamp-burner of any suitable construction, a
stationary wick-tube, a vertically-movable relief-valve, and a spring which is secured to the wick-tube, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to place the valve around a stationary wick-tube, so that when the explosion takes place the pressure of the gas will raise the valve upward, and then let it snap back into position again, without in any manner moving the wick-tube or any other portion of the burner. 1
Figures 1 and 2 are vertical cross-sections of a lamp-burner embodying my invention, taken at right angles to each other, and Fig. 3 is an inverted view of the same.
A represents the lamp-burner, of any desired shape, size, or construction, and which has the wick-tube B secured rigidly in position The lower end of thisburner is open, as shown in Fig. 3, upon both sides of the lower end of the wick-tube, so as to leave a large free vent for the upward escape of the gas in case an explosion should occur.
The safety-valve (J is placed upon the bottom D of the lower part of the burner, and has a hole made through its center, so as to pass down over the top of the stationary'wick-tube. This valve is so constructed as to form a tight connection with the bottom D of the burner, and around the sides and ends of the wicktube, and yet has afree vertical play upon the tube.
Secured to the wick-tube, either" as here shown or in any other suitable manner, is a suitable spring, F, the lower ends of which bear upon the top of the valve upon opposite sides of the wick-tube, and which spring allows the valve to rise upward far enough, when an explosion takes place, for the gas to freely escape, and then the spring G causes the valve to snap back into position again, so as to extinguish the flame.
Where the wick-tube is made vertically movable wfth the valve, as shown and described in my former patent, it sometimes happens, when the parts are not perfectly made, that in raising the wick the tube will be lifted upward and the'flame either extinguished or its: brightness greatly impaired by reason of the upper end of the wick being brought too near to the opening in the top of the cone. My present invention is intended to remedy that defect.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the lamp-burner provided with a stationary wick-tube, a verticallymovable valve surrounding the wick-tube, and having secured to the wick-tube and bearing on the movable valve a spring for forcing the valve back into position after it has been raised upward by the force of the gas, substantially as shown and described. 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT P. ODELL. Witnesses:

WM. H. KERN.
