SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,825, dated April 5, 1881.
Application filed September 3, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Xenia, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of theinvention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of rotary churns which are mounted upon a frame and operated by gearing, as seen in the patent. of Wm. Robinson, N 0. 50,63}, dated October 24, 1865, as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out in the claim.
The main objects of my improvements are to construct and arrange the parts acting upon the cream so that they shall be within the churn-box, and protect the cream from the deposits of the frictional bearing-surfaces.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a vertical sectional view of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the churn-box partially broken awayto show the tube extending from the bottom of the box. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the dasher with the center tube or cap partially broken away to show more fully the socket to receive the upper end of the shaft, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the strainer.
In the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, the letter A represents the frame having a platform, B, upon which is mounted the churn-box C. To the under side of the platform B are arranged two or more brackets or journal-bearin gs, to support the operating-gearing. In' the bracket or journalbearin g D, which is arrangedin the center of the platform, is stepped thevertical shaft E, having near its lower end pinion b, meshing with pinion d, arranged at right angles thereto, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The churn-box O is provided with a central tube, F, extending from the bottom of the box to about twothirds or three-fourths the height of the box, as seen in Fig. 2. This tube is rigidly attached to the under side of thebottom of the churnbox and passed through an openwith the downwardly-projecting dasher-arms e. The central portions of the cross-bars are formed with asocket and provided with a tube or sleeve, K, as shown fully in Fig. 3. This sleeve or tube K is designed to tit over tube F so as to'make a close joint and prevent the escape of the cream when it is being agitated. This tube also serves to prevent the dasher and central shaft from wabblin gdurin g the operation. This dasher is adjusted onto the shaft by fitting the socketiover the upper end of the shaft E, and the tube K passing over the tube F of the churn-box so as to make a close joint.
Within the churn-box is arranged thestrainer M, with the ends turned up, constituting a surrounding flange, Z, and correspondingin dimeusions with the area of the inside dimension of the churn-box. This strainer has a perforated bottom, and is provided at diagonal corners with handles N, to lift it out of the churn. corresponding in size to the tube F, in order that it may be let down into place over the said tube.
Operation: The cover or lid is of the box is removed, and the cream poured into the churnbox until it reaches, or nearly so, the top of the tube F, so that the churn-box shall be twothirds, or nearly so, full. already in place, is adjusted in position so the arms 0 shall extend downwardly. The cover is now replaced to close the churn-box.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a churn, the combination of the churnbox 0, the cover 70, and the tube F for the passage of the operating-shaft with the churn- 25 dasher H, provided with an overfitting cap or sleeve, K, said tube F and dasher being coma pletely located within the el1urn-box,'as set forth.
