' DRAPE HANGER\AND CURTAIN ROD SUPPORTING DEVICE Filed May 28, 1945' Z 17 w 9 j 94 I W I MK Patented Apr. 9, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DRAPE HANGER AND CURTAIN ROD SUPPORTING DEVICE 7 Carl Dodegge, Maywood, Ill.
Application May 28, 1945, Serial No. 596,234
6 Claims. (01. 211-1053) This invention relates to a drape hanger and curtain rod-supporting unit for hanging drapes, curtains, and like fabric window ornaments in association with a window opening.
An object of the present invention is to provide a novel device for hanging drapes or like fabric window ornaments, and by means of which the position of the drapes, or like fabric window ornaments, relative to the window opening may be adjusted or varied laterally so as to create the impression or illusion that the window opening is substantially wider or larger than it actu: ally is.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel device for supporting or hanging drapes or the like in a window opening and which device is simple and inexpensive in construction and readily adjustable so as to hang the drapes or like fabric window ornaments in the desired position relativeto and at the vertical side edges of the window opening.
Another object of the present invention is to provide in each of the new units in the invention a novel device for supporting a curtain rod and for clamping the same in position of use.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a novel device for clamping the curtain supporting rod relative to each of the drape hanger brackets which are embodied in the invention.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which, by way of illus tration, shows preferred embodiments of the invention and the principles thereof and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying those principles. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principles may be used and structural changes may be made as desired 'by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claims.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a window opening showing a preferred form of the new drape hanger and curtain rod-supporting unit associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view illustrating. the
new drape hanger and curtain rod-supporting unit shown in Fig. 1 in position of use;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail plan view illustrating a clamping device embodied in the present invention for clamping the curtain rod embodied therein in position of use Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view, partly in section, illustrating a preferred form of one of the new adjustable clamping units for the drape-supporting bars which are embodied in the invention; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the device shown in Fig. 4.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing, and comprises a pair of similar drape hanger and curtain rod-supporting units 9 which may be suitably mounted in association with and at opposite sides of a window opening as by being mounted upon a horizontally extending upper rail I 2 of a window frame I 3 which is formed orprovided in the building wall M in which the window opening is formed.
Each of the new drape hanger and curtain rodsupporting units 9 comprises a U-shaped supporting and clamping bracket or member I0, which is preferably formed of a suitably shaped single piece of somewhat resilient metal such, for example, as brass, steel or aluminum, and includes a pair of spaced, resilient diverging clamping arms l5 and a bight portion l6 which interconnects the resilient clamping arms l5. The bight portion l6 of each clamping and supporting member It) provides a mounting by means of which the said member ID may be mounted on the parts ll-IZ as by means of suitable fastening elements, such as screws I1, extended through openings l8 formed in the bight portion l6 of each member In The outer end portion of each of the clamping arms IS in each of the members i0 is provided with an opening 19 and each unit 9 includes a pair of slidably adjustable drape hanger supports or supporting bars 20 and 21 The supporting bars 202| in each pair of the same are slidably projected through the aligned openings I9 in the clamping arms l5 of one of the clamping and supporting members H) in parallel and side by side contacting relationship, this being accomplished by manually grasping the clamping arms l5 and pressing the same together, against the force of their own resiliency, from their nor- .mal and divergent position, as in full lines (Fig. 4), into compressed and substantially parallel relation, as in dotted lines, Fig. 4. The inner drape-supporting hanger or bar 20, in each pair of the same, is provided at the outer end thereof withan inwardly curved portion 22 which extends inwardly toward the supporting wall, as 's'hown'in Figs, 1 and 2. a A pair. ofv spaced openings 21 are provided in each clamping arm [5 of each of the members In for the reception of a curtain supporting-rod 23 which is preferably embodied in each of the units 9. The curtain rod 23 may be held in a selected position upon the corresponding mem- V ber 10, and relative to the window opening I l, by
means of a pair of resilient and prefer-ably metallic V-shaped clamping members 24, one of which may be mounted on the inner clamping arm l5 of each member l0. Each of these clamping members 2G embodies a pair of resilient diclamping arms 2-5 is provided with a hole or opening 26 for the reception of the curtain sup ort ing-rod 23.
In the use of the new drape hanger and curtain rod-supporting units 9 which are embodied in the invention the same may be mounted upon the parts H-l2 in association with a window portion of the curtain-supporting rod 23.- This is accomplished by manually compressing the re silient arms of the clamping member 24 between the thumb and finger of the hand while holding the clamping member 24 over the inner clamping arm I5 of the corresponding member H], with the two holes 26 in the arms of the clamping member 24 in alignment with one of the holes 27 in the inner arm l5 of the member ill, as shown in Fig. 4, while employing the other hand to project the outer end portion of the curtain-supporting rod 23 through the thus aligned openings 26 and 21. When the clamping members 24 are thus placed in position and thereupon released from compressed condition their resilient clamping jaws 25 will spread apart under the force of their own resiliency and will thus clamp the end portions of the curtain supporting-rod 23 in the desired position upon the members Ill and relative to the window opening ll.
yerging clamping arms 25 and each of these I dow opening which the drapes border and ornament, and the vertical side edges of which the drapes roughly define, is substantially wider than the width of the window opening II which is indicated when the inner drape hangers or supporting bars are disposed in inwardly extended position relative to the outer drape hangers or supporting bars 2|. It will also be noted that when the clamping arms 15 of each drape hanger and curtain rods'upporting unit 9 are manipulated the curtain rod clamping members 24 ride upon the inner clamping arms l5 of the members l0 and allow the curtain rod 23 to slide relative thereto without altering the position of the curtain supporting-rod 23 itself.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, considered in conjunction with'the accom- The drape hangers or supporting bars Zllan'd 2! may then be inserted through the aligned openings IS in the clamping arms I5 of each member in by manually compressing said arms together, against the force of their own resiliency, intothe' position in which they are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. Accordingly, when the clamping arms I5 of each member H] are then released they will spread apart under the force of their arm resiliency into the position in which they are shown in fulllines in Fig. 4, and will 7 thus clamp the drape supporting bars or hangers 202l in the desired position.
Drapes or like fabric window ornaments may be suspended from the two pairs of supporting bars 2fl-2 I in any suitable manner, as by means of rings slipped over the bars 262! and attached to the upper edges of the drapes, or otherwise.
It will be noted that the two drape-supporting bars or hangers 20-2| in each unit 9 may be slidably adjusted relative to each other and relative to the window opening H by manually compressing the clamping arms l5 of the members In together, so as to enable the drapes to be folded or expanded laterally. Thus when the inner bars 20 are slid outwardly relative to the outer bars 2|, into the position in which the bars 20-2| are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the drapes held thereby will be expanded or unfolded laterally and will thus create the impression thatthe winpanying drawing, that. the present invention provides a novel and simple combination drape hanger and curtain rod-supporting unit which has the desirable advantages and characteristics, and accomplishes its intended objects, including those hereinbefore pointed out, and others which are inherent in the invention.
