The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character which when mounted on a float, barge or the like may be conveniently operated, either manually or by motor power to raise or lower the drill carried thereby for compensating for the rise and fall of the tide, to maintain the drill bit aligned with the hole being drilled to prevent the drill bit from binding or sticking or from breaking incident thereto.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description roceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a drill lift constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the mounting thereof on a barge or float for supporting the bit of the drill in alignment with the hole being drilled in a bridge abutment, sea wall or the like.
Figure 2 is a plan view, partly in section, illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing a portion of the lift.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing. both the hand and power means for bringing about vertical adjustment of the drill.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly in section, of the operating means.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a barge or float and 6 a bridge abutment, sea wall or the like, and I holes in the bridge abutment or sea wall formed by a power operated drill 8 of a conventional construction either pneumatically or electrically operated. I-Ie'retofore it has been very difllcult to maintain the bit of the drill 8 properly aligned with the hole being drilled due to the constant changing of the tide, frequently resulting in the bit sticking or jamming in the hole and sometimes resulting in the breaking of the bit. To overcome this difiiculty, the present invention is employed for the support of the drill on the barge or float whereby vertical adjustment of the drill can be easily brought bout and further whereby the drill may be adjusted horizontally. v
Mounted vertically on the barge or float is a tubular post 9, the lower end of which is fitted in a base 10 removably secured to the barge or float.
Paralleling the post '9 and forming an integral part with opposite sides thereof are guide ribs H) to revent turning of a bearing sleeve ll slidably mounted On the post. The bearing sleeve H includes a clamp I2 for supporting horizontally of the post and between the latter and the bridge abutment or sea wall a bar Hi. The clamp l2 will permit the bar l3 to be adjusted endwise and mounted thereon is the drill 8, the latter being provided with a clamp H to embrace the bar 13. By employing bars I3 of different lengths one or more drills may be mounted thereon. The clamp M will permit the drill 8 to be tilted upwardly or downwardy for varying the direction of operation of the bit of the drill indicated by the character l5.
A vertically arranged frame It is carried by the base l0 and the upper portion of the post 9 and rotatably supports a feed shaft l1. Meshing with the feed threads and forming an integral part of the bearing sleeve II is a feed nut l8. The rotation of the feed shaft H in different directions brings about sliding movement of the bearing sleeve in opposite directions and consequently raises and lowers the drill and its bit with respect to the bridge abutment or sea wall. The upper end of the feed shaft has secured thereto a gear l9 engaged by gears 20 and 2|. A power shaft 22 is secured to the gear 20 and a hand operated shaft 23 is secured to the ear 2|. The hand shaft 23 isjournaled in the upper portion of the post 9 and i equipped with a hand wheel 24. The shaft 22 is journaled in a frame 25 carried by the upper portion of the post and is connected to a motor 26 of the reversible type, either electrically or pneumatically operated.
The motor 26 is supported by the frame 25.
Through the use of the motor 26, the drill 8 may be raised and lowered by power and at any time it is desired to vary the elevation of the drill 8 of the post 9 and to the barge to cooperate with the base ID, in maintaining the post 9' in a vertical or perpendicular position.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be .l understood that minor changes in construction,
combination and arrangement of parts may be 1 made without departing from the spirit and scope 1 of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;
In a'1ift,.a vertically arranged post, a base attaching the lower end of the post to a supportallel to said post and having its lower end secured to said base with its upper end secured to said post, a feed screw journalled through the upper end of said frame with its lower end secured in the lower end of said frame, said feed screw paralleling said post between said frame and said post, a feed nut engaging said feed screw v and secured to said bearing sleeve, means for roing structure, a bearing sleeve mounted on the tating the feed screw, a, clamping member secured to said bearing sleeve for adjustably carrying and positioning a horizontal supporting bar and a horizontal frame carrying a drill adjustably clamped to said supporting bar at right angles thereto, whereby said horizontal frame --may be supported at varying vertical angles relative to said supporting bar.
