Appllcationssmberzl. No. 500,756
This invention relates to valve bags, and has for its object to provide a valve which may be positively closed, with a minimum of dimculty and a maximum of certainty, after the bag has been lled. The invention is particularly applicable to a bag in which the valve is formed by omitting the paste from one of the inner flaps in making a pasted-end diamond folded bag, or a similar type of valve.
Valves of the type mentioned close sufhciently for many purposes, and have been used extensively. but there are many materials which it would be desirable to package in valve bags, but
of which even the small leakage usual from suchA bags is objectionable. The purpose of the present invention is to add a valve-closing means that does not interfere with the usual valve-bag illing operation and which may be operated to form a secureclosure by a very simple ,movel ment.
In theform shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the Beneral construction is similar vto that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the same reference characters are applied to identical parts.- There is an additional sleeve l1' the inner end I6' of theupper wall of which forms the valve-closing member. If this sleeve is made of still' paper or the like.
it is creased at i8 so as to form a hinge for the back at I4' and attached to the valve-closing member I6', and' operates to fold that member to closing position, as will be readily understood from Fig. 4.
20 While, for simplicity of illustration, but one 25 bag wall has no direct bearing upon the suppleshows the valve after it has been closed; Fig. 3 is similar to Fig. 1, but shows a modiiied embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 4 is like Fig. 3, but shows the valve after it has been closed. In the form shown in Fig. 1 there is indicated a conventional type of valve bag having endclosing outer naps Il and |I` pasted together in the usual manner and inner nap I2 left free from paste to form a valve iiap.
The addition which constitutes the present invention comprises a strip I3 extending from outmental closing .arrangement illustrated. Also. it will be understood that it makes no di'erence whether the-bag is gusseted or not. While I prefer to make pull member'l I3 or I3' of v a iiat 30 or ribbon like strip, it will 'be understood that any kind ofa pull member vmay be used whichv will serve to swing the closure member into closing position, and any shaped closure member may be used which may be swung into position 85 to securely close the valve opening. Various side the lbag through the valve opening and having its inner end folded back at i4 and adhered to the overlying flap l0 at l5. The folded back end of strip Il also has securely fastened thereto a closure member which extends inward at Il beyond the fold Il of the strip. and is preferably stiifer than the strip.
Itwiilbeseen thatailllingtubemaybein-l -serted beneath strip I3 with no difficulty, and
that the strip and closure member Il do not interfere in any way with the iilling operation. When the bag has been lled and the illling tube withdrawn, strip Il may be drawn out as shown in Fig. 2. This straightens the fold at I4 and folds the strip at l1 at the inner edge of where it is secured to iiap il. This swings closure member Il outward beneath the inner end of flap l2,
of, or in addition to, adhesive wherever desired or preferred. Other changes may be madein the details of construction within the terms of the appended claims while vretaining the essentialfeatures of the invention. What I claim is:' l
' i 1. A valve type bag having a iilling opening through the wall thereof, a valve flap extending into the bag from the inner side of the open ing, an imperforat'e closure member secured tothebagwallontheouterslde ofsaidopening andhingedwithrespecttothebagwallandhavingafree endextendingintothebagfurtherthan' said flap. and a thin iiexible sheet' strip pull memgerhingedlyattachedtotheclurememberwith therebysecurely closlngtheiillingopening. 65 thehingelineinspacedrelationtosaidfreeend th Y', pull member extending outward through the nlling opening to the exterior of the bag and operable to pull said closure member outward about its hinge to a position where it underlies the inner end of the valve ilap to positively grip the latter against the pull strip.
2. A valve type bag having a illing opening through the wall thereof, a valve flap extending into the bag from the inner side of the opening,
extending into the bag further than said flap, a
pull member comprising a thin exible sheet strip?l one end of which is hingedly attached(to;tliewbag'k wall opposite to the ap and which has apoi'tlon' extending from said attachment; invvaifdlvgoi.,.;the; bag, the closure member being attached'to'suchf inwardly extending portion of the pull member in spaced relation to said :freeprend',saidzclosureT member and attached inwardly extendingprtion Y asoman hlnging about saidpull strip hinge and-"thelatter operating to secure the closurermemberftothe bag wall and the other end ofthe ypull member` extending outward through the illingbpening and operable ,to pull said closure member to a position where it underlies the inner end of the valve ilap, said closure member being asheet of material meer nia pull member extends inwardly.
-- 3. A valve type bag having a lling openin ,bakf'upon itself at said point and said 'ti'd'fbkiprtlon being joined to the hinged- ,tab onifgthezinner end-A of said wall of said' sleeve andnwhich.lbeiorefthe valve is closed, normally protrude'sfromadjacent said reversing point gen- :erally inward.. of.l the?A bag beyond the other wall of `the`sleve the'portions being constructed and arranged 'whereby upon pulling the strip out' wrdlyin the Slew@ Saidxntabis Swungandpulled willy "utwarqlygdirgecteu iene??
