c. GENJACK' v Feb. 19, 1946.
TOY
Filed Oct. 30, 1944 llYf/l/Y TOR C n/Mo 60mm Patented Feb. 19, 1946 TOY Conrad Genjack, North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Application October 30, 1944, Serial No. 560,916
4 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in toys of the fire arm type.
The objects of the invention are to provide a toy weapon such as rifle, tommy gun, ack ack guns and quick firing guns generally which is capable of being very cheaply made and which can be used to simulate single or multiple shots at will, and one which is capable of producing a realistic noise as each shot is fired. A further object is to provide a structure wherein by manipulation of the gun, the noise of the simulated detonation may be modulated at will, so that when one or more such guns are used by skillful performers tonal values akin to music may be obtained.
The invention consist of a gun having a diaphragm which is adapted to be struck in response to the actuation of the trigger or firin crank, as will be more fully described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a general elevational View of the invention representative of a tommy gun, with the magazine above the gun stock.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the operating mechanism of the gun.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a modified form in which the magazine is below the gun stock.
Fig. 4 i a perspective View showing the single shot firing means.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the numeral 1 indicates the gun stock which is provided at its outer end with a dummy barrel 2. The stock is cut away behind the barrel and is fitted with a magazine 3 which is preferably formed as an ordinary cylindrical can having an end closure or diaphragm 4 at its rear end and is open ended at its forward end.
The stock immediately to the rear of the magazine is bored longitudinally as at 6 to form a cylinder for a spring retracted bolt 1. The bolt I is provided with a head 8 at its rear end which is adapted to be engaged by the peripheral teeth H) of a cam H which is housed in a mortise [2 in the stock I. The bolt 1 is provided with a peripheral groove l3 into which one end of a retractile spring 14 is turned to form a rear anchorage for said spring, the forward end of the spring i bent to form a, hook l5 which is hooked over the forward end of the wall [6 surrounding the cylinder 6. The length of the bolt 1 is such as to permit it to strike the diaphragm 4 each time the head 8 slips off a tooth III of the cam II. The cam II is secured to a shaft l8 which is fitted on the outside of the stock with a. hand crank [9.
In the modification shown in Figure 3, 20 indicate the stock which is fitted with an open ended magazine or cylinder 2| below said stock. A spring retracted plunger 22 having a head 23 is mounted in the lower part of the stock and is adapted to be engaged by the teeth 25 of a cam 26, the cam being mounted on a shaft 28 which is fitted with a hand crank 29.
The assembly of the magazine 2|, plunger 22, the cam 26 and the hand crank 29 is similar to that previously described except that in the gun shown in Figures 1 and 2, the cam II is turned in an anti-clockwise direction to fire the gun, wherea in the modification shown in Figure 3 the cam 26 is turned in a clockwise direction.
To afford convenient access to the head 8 of the bolt 1 to retract it by the finger tip, as for firing single shots, the stock is gouged out adjacent the head as at 30, see Figure 4.
In operation the gun is held in the usual way according to the purpose for which it is to be used.
In the device as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the hand crank is turned in an anti-clockwise direction, causing the plunger 1 to be repeatedly withdrawn from contact with the diaphragm 4, the spring returning said plunger to strike the diaphragm and produce the desired report each time the head 8 slips off a cam tooth H).
In the device shown in Figure 3 the hand crank 29 is turned in a clockwise direction with identical results.
By partially or wholly closing the open end of the magazine with the hand when firing, the tone of the successive reports from the weapon is modulated, so that with practice some semblance of music may be played. The report from the diaphragm is not only capable of modulation by partial closure of the mouth or open end of the magazine, but is greatly increased and improved in resonance by being surrounded with the cylindrical wall of the magazine formin a sound bell.
What I claim as my invention is:
1.,A toy gun comprising a stock, a barrel, a diaphragm supported by the stock, a bell surrounding the diaphragm, a plunger slidably mounted within the stock to strike the diaphragm, a manually operated toothed member for engaging the plunger to move it in one direction and retractile spring means for moving the plunger in the opposite direction.
2. A toy gun comprising a stock, a barrel, a, diaphragm supported by the stock, a member normally held in contact with the diaphragm by a retractile spring, said member being mounted to strike the diaphragm and manually operated means having teeth for engaging the member to retract said member.
3. A toy gun comprising a stock, a barrel, a diaphragm supported by the stock, a retractile member mounted to strike the diaphragm, said retractile member having a head at one end, a cam carried by the stock adapted to engage the head to withdraw the retractile member from the diaphragm and manual means for actuating the cam.
4. A toy gun comprising a. stock, a barrel, a diaphragm supported by the stock, a plunger carried by the stock adapted to strike the diaphragm, said plunger having a head, a spring for moving the plunger towards the diaphragm, a cam having teeth carried by the stock, said teeth being adapted to progressively engage the plunger to withdraw it from contact with the diaphragm, a crank for rotating the cam, said stock having a portion exposed to afford access to a portion of the head to facilitate the retractile movement of the plunger by finger tip action.
