The invention here disclosed relates to the dressing of abrasive wheels.
Special objects of the invention are to provide apparatus for such purpose, which will be of simple, rugged construction, low in cost, easy to set and to operate and which can be used for practically any truing or wheel dressing purposes and be operated fast or slow, or at any speed found best suited to the work in hand.
Particular objects are to enable the normal range of the tool to be increased as need be and to enable the tool being applied to special uses, such as forming unusual contours, in addition to the usual uses of truing up, imparting a certain angle or applying a particular convex or concave arc to the wheel.
Other desirable objects and the novel features by which the purposes of theV invention are attained are set forth or will appear in the course of the following specification.v
The drawings accompanying and forming part of the specioation illustrate certain practical embodiments of the invention, but structure'may be modified and changed as regards such illus-V tration, all within the vtrue intent and broad scope of the invention, as hereinafter defined and claimed.

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3, the diamond point or dressing tool 1, is carried by a post 8, mounted in freely slidable relation on a base member 9, and the latter is pivotally mounted on a base member l0, adapted to be secured by bolts or magnetic chuck on the worktable of the grinder.
The' pivotal mounting of the upper base member`9, is eiected by providing it with a dependent relatively large diameter stud I I, rotatable 'in a cylindrical seat l2, in the lower base member and having an annular groove I 3, with an inclined lower wall I4, engaged by the correspondingly inclined inner end of a holddown stud l5, slidable in the bore I6, and backed up by the screw l1. This screw can be set just to hold the upper base member rmly but freely rotatable on the lower base member or to xedly secure and hold the upper member against rotation.
The freely slidable mounting of the tool carrying post on the rotatable base member is effected in the illustration by providing such base member with an upstanding elongated bearing I8, at the back and a track 19, at the front and by providing the post member with a guide pin 20, slidable in said bearing and a companion track 2|, riding on the track I9. y
The post member is shown as having a hollow base portion 22, forming a housing and cover for the slidingly related parts described and serving to protect these parts and keep them free of grit.
TheV guiding and supporting pin 2li, is shown as adjustably and removably secured in the hollow base 22, by screws 23, seated in opposite end walls of this base and having centering projections 24, engaged in center openings 25, in the ends of the pin.
For securing the sliding base 22, in centered or other desired fixed relation on the rotatable base 9, two set screws 26, 21, are shown projecting inward through the back wall of the hollow base into position, one or the other or both, depending on the particular position of the sliding base on the rotatable base, to engage the guide bearing I8.
An upstanding handle lug 28, on top of the sliding base, at the foot of the post or pedestal,- provides a convenient grip for the lingers in holding, positioning or sliding this Abase back and forth and this hand engagement with the base enables the operator to feel the resistance encountered by the tool and to feed the tool accordingly.
To limit the feed stroke in opposite directions,
the supporting track I9, is shown as formed with 3l, 32, at opposite ends of the same are shownv as formed as parts of an upwardly angled gap or wide notch in the lower forward edge of the hollow base member, overstanding and receiving the upwardly projecting supporting track i9, with the stop shoulders at the opposite ends of that. The downwardly iiaring flange 33, about the entire periphery of the side wall or skirt of the upper cover forming member serves to deflect dirt and cuttings away from the parts to be protected.
The rotatable base member S is shown as having a substantially circular rim portion, carrying at the front a 90 scale 3s, registering with an index 35, on the lower base member.
The post is shown as carrying Vertical gage surfaces 3B, 31, on angularly related sides of the same for aiding in setting the dressing tool. For such operations, a gage block, such as indicated in broken lines at 38, may be employed, the Same shown as having an offset 39, which will locate the point of the tool over the exact center of the base pivot ll, when the post is in the mid position, Fig. 1.
For dressing on a straight line, as for truing up the face of a grinding wheel, the swivelled base member 9, is locked against pivotal movement by tightening screw I1, at the position where the sliding base will carry the tool point across the face of the wheel at the desired angle. The' scale 34 provides convenient means for locking up the rotatable base member at such. proper position. The sliding base can then be shifted back and forth by hand, as quickly or as slowly as desired and with varying speeds, as opposition to such feeding movements increases or reduces. This free feeding action enables the operator to in eifect feel his way along and thus determine as the operation proceeds just how fast to go to get the best or quickest results. The post as well as the sliding base portion of the post may be of hollow construction as indicated, so that this whole slide member will be light enough for this variable hand feed operation.
For radius dressing, the slide may be iixed by one or the other, or both set screws 2li, 2l, with the tool pointat the necessary radial distance from the swivel center and then with the screw il, loosened, the swivel base 9, may be rocked back and forth, to carry the point on an arc across the rim of the wheel. Convex and concave arcs can be produced by disposing the tool post at opposite sides of the pivot center.
The cooperating stops 29, 3l and 3l), 32 limit the radius adjustments for these arc forming op erations.
The radial adjustments may be extended however, under the present invention, by mounting the tool carrying base 22, to slide on the upper end of a rocker 4t, Figs. 5 and 6, and connecting it by means of a radius rod 4l, with a pivot pin 42, set to swivel in a supporting base 43. This last mentioned base and the special base 44, which carries the rocker, may be secured by locating them in proper relation on the magnetic chuck 45, on the worktable of the grinder. The radius rod 4I may be calibrated to aid in setting and securing the tool post at the proper radial distance from the center 42. Means for sosecuring the rod are indicated in the form of a clamp screw 46, on center pin 42, and the radius rod is shown as adapted to be detachably hooked into one or the other of seats lil, 48. in opposite sides of the post carrying base, depending upon whether a concave or a convex arc is to be produced.
The special rocker carrying base ZM, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, may be employed for dressing the face of a wheel to any predetermined contour.
This is accomplished in the illustration, by providing a properly contoured template 49, and securing that on the base in position for engagement by a follower pin 5B, shown detachably secured at 5l, to the front wall portion or the hollow base 22.
The contour template 49 is shown as held in position on the base by being engaged in opposing slots 52, in upstanding pins 53, and as resting at the back against the upstanding ridge 54. The template is removably held in this position by pressure of the follower pin against the forward edge of the same, the pin being tensioned insuch engagement by means of the spring 55, acting on the rocker through sliding plunger 5t, and thus upon the base carrying the pin.
The supporting pin which slides in the top of the rocker may be the same pin, 20, provided for mounting the tool carrying base on the swivelled support rst described, or it may be an eXtra pin provided for this particular purpose, the ready removability enabling such substitution of pins, when so desired.
The supporting and guiding of the sliding base by means of a cylindrical rod or pin sliding in an elongated bearing provides a simple, rigid, accurate form of slide mounting, enabling the tool carrier to be easily and smoothly fed by hand, either fast or slow, or at any varying speed and this construction also permits of the carrier being rocked back on the rod as a pivot center, for any purpose, such as to inspect or to lubricate the sliding parts protected by this cover formation.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, comprising a support, a base member mounted to swivel on said support and a dressing tool carrier mounted for free sliding movement on said swivelled base member and directly operable by hand at any selected speeds, said base member having a raised supporting track across the front and an elongated bearing across the back of the same and the tool carrier having a hollow base covering said track and bearing, with a track in the forward edge of the same riding said supporting track and a rod in the rearward portion of the same riding in said elongated bearing.
2. Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels. comprising a support, a base member mounted to swivel on said support and a dressing tool carrier mounted for free sliding movement on said swivelled base member and directly operable by hand at any selected speeds, said base member having a raised supporting track across the front and an elongated bearing across the back of the same and the tool carrier having a hollow base covering said track and bearing, with a track in the forward edge of the same riding said supporting track, a rod in the rearward portion of `the same riding in said elongated bearing, said supporting track having abrupt stop shoulders at opposite ends of the same and said riding track being of longer extent than the supporting track and having abrupt stop shoulders at the ends of the same for coaction with said rst mentioned stop shoulders.

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, comprising a base member having an upstanding supporting track across the front of the same and terminating in abrupt stop shoulders and an elongated bearing at the back of said base member parallel with said track, a hollow base covering said track and bearing and having in the forward edge portion of the same a track riding said supporting track and stop members for coaction with ,the first mentioned stop shoulders, a guide` rod removably supported in opposite end walls of' said hollow base and freely slidable in said elongated bearing, an upstanding dressing tool post on said hollowv base and handle means on said hollow base for imparting variable hand feeding movements to said hollow base member.

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, comprising a base member having an upstanding supporting track across the front of the same and terminating in abrupt stop shoulders, an elongated bearing at the back of said base member parallel with said track, a hollow base covering said track and bearing and having in the forward edge portion of the same a track riding said supporting track and stop shoulders for coaction with the first mentioned stop shoulders, a guide rod removably supported in opposite end walls of said-hollow base and freely slidable in said elongated bearing, an upstanding dressing tool post on said hollow base and spaced set screws in the back of said hollow base member for engagement with said elongated bearing.

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, comprising a base member having'an upstanding supporting track across the front of the same and terminating in abrupt stop shoulders and an elongated bearing at the back of said base member parallel with said track, a hollow base covering said track and bearing and having in the forward edge portion of the same a track riding said supporting track and stop members for coaction with the first mentioned stop shoulders, a guide rod removably supported in opposite end. walls of said hollow base and freely slidable in said elongated bearing, an upstanding dressing tool post on said hollow base, a pivot stud' dependent from said first mentioned base member, a support in which said stud is rotatably seated, said stud having an annular groove with one inclined side wall, a securing pin slidable in said support into said annular groove and having'an inclined face for engagement with said inclined wall and screw means acting on said securing 6. In apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, a hollow base having a downwardly facing horizontally extending riding track with abrupt end shoulders in the forward edge of the same, a horizontal guiding and supporting rod in the rearward portion of the same, parallel with said riding track, a dressing tool holding post on said hollow base and means for slidably supporting said hollow base, including an elongated bearing for said rod and a supporting track for engagement by said riding track and having abrupt stop shoulders engageable by the first mentioned stop shoulders.

In apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, a hollow base having a downwardly facing horizontally extending riding track with abrupt end shoulders in the forward exdge of the same, a horizontal guiding and supporting rod in the rearward portion of the same, parallel with said riding track, a dressing tool holding post on said hollow base and means for slidably supporting said hollow base, including an elongated bearing for said rod, a supporting track for engagement by said riding track and having abrupt stop shoulders engageableby the first mentioned stop shoulders and a pivotally mounted rocker carrying said bearing.

In apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, a hollow base having a downwardly facing horizontally extending. riding track with abrupt end shoulders in the forward edge of the same, a horizontal guiding and supporting rod in the rearward portion of the same, parallel with said riding track, a dressing tool holding post on said hollow base and means for slidably supporting said hollow base, including an elongated bearing for said rod, a supporting track for engagement by said riding track and having abrupt stop shoulders engageable by the first mentioned stop shoulders and a pivotally mounted rocker carrying said bearing, said rocker being pivotally mounted on an axis parallel with the axis of said bearing to enable movements of said tool carrying base at an angle to the sliding movements of the same and means for directing and controlling said angular movements of the tool carrying base.

In apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, a hollow base having a downwardly facing horizontally extending, riding track with labrupt end shoulders in the forward edge of the same, a horizontal guiding and supporting rod in the rearward portion of the same, c parallel with said riding track, a dressingtool holding post on said hollow base and means for slidably supporting said hollow base, including an elongated bearing for said rod, a supporting track for engagement by said riding trackand having abrupt stop shoulders yengageablekby the first mentioned stop shoulders and a pivotally mounted rocker carrying said bearing, said rocker being pivotally mounted on an axis parallel with the axis,v of said bearing to enable movements of said tool carrying base at an angle to the sliding movements of the same, and means for directing and controlling said angular movements of the tool carrying base, including a template supported independently of said base and a follower on the base for engagement with said template.

In apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, a hollow base having a downwardly facing horizontally extending riding track with abrupt end shoulders in the forward edge of the same, a horizontal guiding and supporting rod in the rearward portion of the same, parallel with said riding track, a dressing tool holding post on said hollow s base and means for slidably supporting said hollow base, including an elongated bearing for said rod, a supporting track for engagement by said riding track and having abrupt stop shoulders engageable by the first mentioned stop shoulders and a pivotally mounted rocker carrying said bearing, said rocker being pivotally mounted on an axis parallel with the axis of said bearing to enable movements of said tool carrying base at an angle to the sliding movements of the same, and means for directing and controlling said angular movements of the tool carrying base, including a radius rod engaged with said tool carrying base and a pivotal mounting for said radius rod.

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, comprising a base having a supporting track at the front of the same and an upstanding pivoted rocker at the back of the same, a tool carrying base pivotally and slidably supported on the upper end of said rocker and having a track at the forward portion of the same slidingly engaging said supporting track.

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, comprising a base having a supporting track at the front of the same and an upstanding pivoted rocker at the back of the same, a tool carrying base pivotally and slidably supported on the upper supporting track and means for controlling the sliding movements of said tool carrying base on said supporting base,

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels, comprising a base member having a horizontally extending supporting track across the iront of the same and a parallel upstanding bearing across the back of the same and a dressing tool carrying post having a hollow base covering said base member and provided with a riding track in the forward edge of the same freely slidable over the supporting track and a guide pin Within the back portion of the same freely slidable in said bearing.

Apparatus for dressing. grinding Wheels, comprising a base member having a horizontally extending supporting track across the front of the same and a parallel upstanding bearing across the back of the same and a dressing tool carrying post having a. hollow base covering said base member and provided with a riding track in the forward edge of the same, freely slidable over the supporting track, a guide pin Within the back portion of the same freely slidable in said bearing, said post having vertically extending gage faces on different sides of the same engageable by a gage block for setting a tool in different angular positions on the post.

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels to convex or concave arcs of different radii, cornprising a dressing tool carrier, a base on Which said carrier is confined to longitudinal and transverse sliding movements, an adjustable radius determining member engageable With said carrier at one or the other side of the plane of operation of the dressing tool carrier, said member including a radius link having a disconnectable pivotal engagement at one end With the dressing tool carrier at one or the other side of the same and an adjustable pivotal anchorage for the other end of said link at either side of said carrier.

Apparatus for dressing grinding wheels comprising a dressing tool carrier, a base on which said carrier is longitudinally and transversely slidable, and a conning and supporting rocker pivotally supported on said base at one end and pivotally and slidably connected with said dressing tool carrier at the opposite end.
17. Apparatus for dressing grinding Wheels comprising a dressing tool carrier, a base on which said carrier is longitudinally and transversely slidable, a confining and supporting rocker pivotally supported on said base at one end and pivotally and slidably connected with said dressing tool carrier at the opposite end, and a templet arranged for controlling the movements of said dressing tool carrier.
