2 Claims.
A 'I'his invention relates to a rodmill for crushing, pulverizing or mixing materials, such as dye, face powder, or the like, and is a division of my co-pendlng application, SeriallNo. 424,839, filed December 29, 1941, for Rodmill, now Patent Number 2,367,585, dated January 16, 1945.
An object of this invention is to provide in a pulverizing mill an improved means whereby the ground material may be selectively discharged therefrom during the rotation of the mill.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a pulverizing mill of this kind, an improved means whereby the ground material may be removed from an end of the mill .and retained in a chamber at one end of the mill for rotation with the mill and subsequently discharged from the collecting chamber as the mill rotates.
To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Figure 1 is a detail side elevation partly in longitudinal section of a pulverizing mill constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical section of the closure operator.
Figure 3 is an end view of the mill, omitting the frame structure, the carriage and tracks, to show the radially disposed housings.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I9 designates generally a pulverizing mill member which is rotatably supported on a base structure II. The mill member I9 includes a cylindrical body I2 containing a number of pulverizing units or bars I3. The cylindrical body I2 is formed with an opening I4 through which the material is charged for filling the mill. The closure member I5 is adapted to be removably secured to the cylindrical wall I2 for closing the filling opening I4.
A forward end wall I6 is secured to one end of the cylindrical body I2 and a rear end wall I'I is secured to the opposite end of the cylindrical wall I2. A trunnion I8 is secured to the end wall I 6 and is rotatably supported in a bearing I 9 carried by an upstanding bearing support 20 which is fixed to the base II and braced by means of one or more bracing members 2l. The cylindrical-body I2 adjacent the end wall I'I thereof has secured to the outer peripheral surface thereof a circular track or rail 22, which engages a pair of spaced apart rollers 23 carried by bearing members 24 which are fixed to the base I I.
A ring gear 25 is fixed to the outer side of the end wall I6 and is adapted to mesh with a driving pinion 26 carried by a shaft 2'I. The shaft 2'I is connected to a reduction gearing 28 of conventional construction which has connected therewith a driving wheel 29. The driving wheel 29 may be operated in any suitable manner from a power member (not shown).
The end wall II has secured thereto a pair of diametrically opposed and outwardly extending or offset housings 30 and 3|. The housing 30 is formed of an outer side wall 32 and opposite end walls 33, thereby forming a pulverizing material receiving chamber 34. The outer end of the housing 30 has an outer end wall 35 which is connected with the walls 33 and with the wall 32, and is outwardly olfset from the cuter marginal edge of the end wall II. An inwardly extending wall 36 is connected at one end to the forward end of the outer wall 35, and at the outer end is fixed to the peripheral surface of the cylindrical body I2 forwardly of the end wall I'I.
The cylindrical wall or body I2 is formed with an opening 31 communicating with the passage 38 formed by the wall 36, so that when the housing 30 is in a lowermost position, the pulverized material will flow downwardly through the opening 3'I and the passage 38 into the lower porti-on of the housing 30. The inner portion of the housing 30 is connected to the innerportion of the housing 3| by means of an annular connecting wall 39 which, as shown in Figure l, is inwardly oiset from the outer walls of the two housings 30 and 3 I.
The housing 3I is similar in every detail to the construction of the housing 30, the cylindrical wall I2 being formed with a discharge opening 49 adjacent the end wall I'I which communicates withthe chamber 4I through a passage 42 similar to the passage 38.
A conical material guidingV member generally designated as 92 is disposed coaxial with the openings 45 and 9I, and is fixedly mounted on a stub shaft 93. The stub shaft 93 is fixed in a central boss 94 carried by a plurality of radially disposed bars 95 which are removably fixed to the outer side of the end wall I I. A frusto-conical guide member 96 is fixed at its base to the outer side of the end wall I'I, and loosely engages about the base or inner end of the conical guide member 92. The fixed guide member 96 is adapted to prevent the pulverizing material from returning t the mill I0 in the space between the' base of the conical guide member 92 and the rear side of the end wall |1. The conical guide meinber 92 is formed with a centrally disposed sleeve 91 engaging about the stub shaft 93, and a nut or other fastening device 98 is mounted on the rear end of the stub shaft 93 and bears against the rear end of the sleeve 91, so as to tightly hold the guide member 92 relative to the mill I0.
A cylindrical member 99 is disposed within the opening 9| and is formed with an annular and right angularly disposed ange |00 bearing against the outer side of the annulus 39, which is fixed relative to the rear sidesof the housings 30 and 3|. A plurality of radially disposed and inwardly extending webs |0| are fixed to the cylindrical member 99 and are also xed to the outer surface of the conical guide member 92, so
as to provide an additional supporting means for the guide .member-92. Y
A material delivery spout or nozzle |02 is disposed in downwardly inclined position with re' spect to the mill |0 and is formed .at its vupper end portion with an annular flange |03 bearing against Yan annular gasket or sealing member |04 which is interposed between the flange |00 and the flange |03. `'Ihespout or nozzle |02 is fixed toaframe structure Illb forming part of alcarriage |05. The carriage ishorizontally movable on tracks |05 supported in any suitable manner rearwardly ofthe mill i0. The carriage |05 includes rollers |0'| engaging the tracks |05, so that the nozzle |02 may be shifted away from the rear end of the mill |0. f
A `valve plate |09 of the disc-like form is adapted to selectively Venga-ge against the outer end of the cylindrical member 99, so as .to close the passage formed in the annulus 99, and prevent the material from the housings 30 and v3| from being discharged into the nozzle |02. The valve plate |08 is carried by a horizontally disposed and endwise movable shaft |09, which is slidably mounted in a bearing ||0 carried by the frame |0l|b and is slidable through' a boss iixed to the nozzle |02. Theshaft |09 as shown in Figure 1 is provided at its innerend with a head or flange H2 about which a flanged collar H3 loosely engages. The collar H3 isV formed with an annular groove H4 within which the outer end portion of a valve 'supporting spring |5 is mounted. A
'Ihe forward or vinner end of the spring v| i5 is extended throu'ghan opening H0 formed in the plate |08, and is bent laterally as at l1 on the inner side of the plate |08, so that the inner end of the 'spring ||5 will be xedly disposed `with respectto the plate |08. The spring I l5 provides a ilexible coupling Vor connection between Ythe valve member |08 andthe operating shaft |09, whereas the ilanged collar H3 provides a swivelled connection between the spring |I5 and the shaft |09. In Vorder to provide a means whereby the valve member |00 may be angularly shifted at the same time'that it is moved outwardly and away from the sleeve'or annulus 99, I haveprovided a depending lug or abutment H8 which is xed to the upper'portion of the nozzle |02.

In this angular position the material from the housings 30 and 3| will be discharged therefrom into the delivery nozzle |02.
'I'he shaft |09 is adapted to be moved endwise by means of a pivoted lever I9 which is pivotally 10 iixed relative to the shaft |09 loosely engages. i
VIn the operation of this mill, the body' I0 is rotated through the reduction gearing v28 and y gears 26 and 25. Initially lever ||9 is moved forwardly to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1, so as to .hold closure |08'against theouter end of cylindrical member 99. In this position oi` Vclosure |08 the material which enters the collecting housings 30 and 3| through openings 31 and 40, respectively, Will be retained in these housings.
