` 1s claims. (ci. 51-164) This invention relates to improvements in Tumbling barrels.
'The main objects oi this inventori are:
First, to provide an improved tumbling barrel which is well adaptedfor the practice of wet nishing methods in that it is fluid-tight and at the same time is comparatively simple and economical in structure.
Second, to provide a tumbling barrel whereby the worn out wood lining can be removed and replaced without expending labor for removing the cylinder from the machine and the heads from the cylinder.
Third, to provide a tumbling barrel having permanently associated metal ends instead of removable ends, bulkheads, and wall panels' which can be readily lined without knocking down the machine. l
Fourth, to provide a tumbling barrel in which the lining is mainly made up of strips or bars of wood positioned so as to effectively withstand the wear.
Fifth, to provide a lined tumbling barrel in which the liner elements are supported Without the necessity for bolting to the walls of the barrel.

The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises metal polygonal end members I provided with journals 2. The polygonal sheet metal wall member 3 is welded to the end members. This wall member .comprises angularly disposed panelsthere being one less panel than there are sides to the barrel. The structure illustrated is a two-compartment structure and is provided with an intermediate partition or bulkhead 4 to which the side panels are welded, the bulkhead constituting a supporting and reinforcing means for the wall panels, permitting the use of lighter gauge stock than would be required in tumbling barrels of the same length having only one compartment.
As stated, the wall member has one less panel than there are sides to the barrel and I provide a complemental Wall panel comprising a frame 5 welded to the adjacent edge of the terminal panels 6 of the wall member 3 and to the end members and bulkhead. It will be noted that this frame is of such proportions as to constitute laterally projecting flanges on the panel 6 and on the end members. In the structure illustrated the frame has two openings 'i'.
The panel plates 8 are detachably secured to the frame by means of screws 9. The wall panel ill opposite the panel constituted by the wall panel plates is .provided with` door openings ,I I, the detachable doors being shown at I2, door clamping means I3 being detachably secured by means of bolts Iii.
The end walls and bulkhead are provided with liners I5, these liners being arranged against the sides of the end panels and bulkhead and preferably being made up of sections as indicated in Fig. 2.
The side walls are provided with lateral units I6 preferably made up of a series oi.' bars Il arranged in side by side relation and retained in assembled relation by dowels It. These panel liners have mitered edges I9 adapted to abut when they are in assembled position.
The panel having the door opening therein is provided with frame-like liner members 2U surrounding the door opening and.' the doors are provided with liners 2l iitting into these framelike liner` members. These" frame-like liner members constitute abutments for the adjacent panel liners I6. see Fig. 2;
The removable wall panel plates 8 are provided with liner-panels 22 corresponding to the liner panels I6, these being in mitered engagement with adjacent panels and in effect constituting a key-stone element securing them all in position. The liner panels may be temporarily supported in place as, for example, by means of a prop until the assembly is complete.
The opening 1 in the frame 5 is of such dimensions as to permit the introduction of the liner units I 6 in assembled relation. When introduced, the strips or bars I1 forming the liner units are spaced apart or there is suflcient slack in the assembly on the dowels so that when they become expanded or swollen they form a relatively tight continuous surface.
By thus forming these liner panels the grain of the wood is presented so that it is subject to the least amount of abrasive Wear-that is, the tumbled material moves across the same in the direction of the grain and is much less likely to tear the grain and wear down the liner vthan it would where the movement of the material is crosswise of the grain. The doors counterbalance the-frame and the panel plates.
My improved. tumbling barrel can be made of relatively light stock and at the same time is `strong and rigid and very durable. The body of the barrel may be formed complete and the liners readily introduced which is of substantial manufacturing advantage and also a very great advantage to the user because it makes it possible for him to re-line th'e barrel as the liners may become worn.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a very practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure wil1 en able those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a tumbling barrel, th'e combination of polygonal metal end members provided with journals, a polygonal sheet metal Side wall member comprising angularly disposed panels welded to said end members, said wall member having one less panel than there are sides to the barrel, a polygonal metal bulkhead intermediate said end members and welded to said wall panels and constituting a supporting and reinforcing means therefor, a complemental Wall panel comprising a frame welded to the adjacent edges of the terminal panels of said wall member and to the end members and bulkhead, wall panel plates detachably secured to said frame, the side wall panel opposite said removable wall panels having door ,openings therein, liners disposed against the sides ment through said openings in said frame as assembled units and positioned in relation to their respective panels with the mitered meeting edges thereof in coacting abutting supporting relation, the panel liners adjacent said liners surrounding said door openings being in mitered abutting engagement therewith, said removable wall panels being also provided with similar liner panels in mitered supporting relation to adjacent liner panels, and doors for said openings, said doors being also provided withv liners, said doors and their attaching means comprising counterbalancing means for said frame and removable wall panels.
2. In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal metal end members provided with journals, a polygonal sheet metal side wall member comprising angularly disposed panels welded to said end members, said wall member having one less panel than there are sides to the barrel, a polygonal metal bulkhead intermediate said end members and welded to said Wall panels and constituting a supporting and reinforcing means therefor, a complemental wall panel comprising .A a frame welded to the adjacent edges of the terminal panels of said wall member and to th'e end members and bulkhead, wall panel plates detachably secured to said frame, liners disposed against the sides of the end members and bulkhead, the width of said openings in said frame being substantially the Width of a panel and the length being substantially the width of a panel and the length being substantially the distance between the bulkhead and end liners, and wall panel liner units having mitered meeting edges and comprising a plurality of bar-like pieces disposed transversely of the panels and retained in assembled side by side relation by dowels extending therethrough whereby they may be introduced into the barrel compartment through said openings in said frame as assembled units and positioned in relation to their respective panels with the miered meeting edges thereof in coacting abutting supporting relation, 'said removable wall panels being also provided with similar liner panels in mitered supporting relation to adjacent liner panels.
3. In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal metal end members provided with journals, a polygonal sheet metal side wall member comprising angularly disposed panels welded to of the end members and bulkhead, the width of said openings in said frame being substantially i the width of a panel and the length' being substantially the distance between the bulkhead and end liners, said wall panel having the door openings therein having frame-like liner members surrounding the door openings and constituting liner abutments, wall panel liner units having mitered meeting edges and comprising a plurality of bar-like pieces disposed transversely of the panels and retained in assembledv side by side relation by dowels extending therethrough whereby they may be introduced into the barrel compartsaid end members, said Wall member having one less panel than there are sides to the barrel, a polygonal metal bulkhead intermediate said end members and welded to said wall panels and constituting a supporting and reinforcing means therefor, a complemental wall panel comprising a frame welded to the adjacent edgesof the terminal panels of said wall member and to the end members and bulkhead, wall panel plates detachably secured to said frame, the side wall panel opposite said removable Wall panels having door openings therein, liners disposed against the sides of the end members and bulkhead, said wall panel having the door openings therein having-framelike liner members surrounding the door openings and constituting liner abutments, wall panel liner units having mitered meeting edges adapted to be introduced into the barrel compartment through said openings in said frame and positioned in relation to their respective panels with the mitered meeting edges thereof in coacting abutting supporting relation, the panel liners adjacent said liners surrouning said door openings being in mitered abutting engagement therewith,

In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal metal compartment end members, a polygonal sheet metal side wall member comprising angularly disposed panels welded to said end members, said wall member having one less panel than there are sides to the barrel, a complemental wall panel comprising a frame welded to the adjacent edges of the terminal panels of said Wall member and to said end members, wall panel plates detachably secured to said frame, the. side wall panel opposite said removable wall panels having a door opening therein, liners disposed against the sides of said end members, the width of said lopenings in said frame being substantially the width of a panel and the length being substantially the distance between the end liners, said wall panel having the door opening therein having a liner member constituting a liner abutment,

In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal metal compartment end members; a polygonal sheet metal side wall member comprising angularly disposed panels welded to said end members, said wall member having one less panel than there are sides to the barrel, a complemental wall panel comprising a frame welded to the adjacent edges ofthe terminal panels of said Iwall member and to'said end members, wall panel plates detachably secured to said frame, liners disposed against the sides of said end members, and wall panel liner units having mitered meeting edges and comprising a plurality of bar-like pieces disposed transversely of the panels and retained in assembled side by vside relation by dowels extending therethrough whereby they may be introduced into the barrel compartment through said opening in said frame as an assembled unit and positioned in relation to their respective panels with the mitered meeting edges thereof in coacting abutting supporting relation, said removable wall panels being also provided with a similar liner panel in mitered supporting relation to adjacent liner panels.

In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal metal compartment end members, a polygonal sheet' metal side wall member comprising angularly disposed panels welded to said end members, said wall member having one less panel than there are sides to the barrel, a complemental wall panel comprising a frame welded to the adjacent edgesof the terminal panels of said wall member and to said end members, wall panel plates detachably secured to said frame, liners disposed against the sides of said end members, and wall panel liner units having mitered meeting edges adapted to be introduced into the barrel compartment through said opening in said frame and positioned in relation to their respective panels with the mitered meeting edges-thereof in coacting abutting supporting relation, said removable wall panels being also provided with a liner panel in mitered supporting relation to adjacent liner panels.
9. In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal metal compartment end members,
polygonal sheet metal yside panels welded to said end members, there being one less side panel mental wall panel comprising a frame 'disposed with its inner longitudinal edges substantially' ilush with the adjacent edges of the adjacent side introduction and removal of wall panel liner units and the positioning thereof in relation to their respective panels.
10. In a tumbling barrel, the combination oi polygonal metal compartment end members.
polygonal sheet metal side panels welded to said end members, there being one less panel'th'an there are sides to the barrel, and a complemental wall panel comprising a frame disposed with its inner longitudinal edges substantially ilush with the adjacentedges of the adjacent wall panels to project=outwardly from such edges and welded thereto and to said end members, the width of the opening' of said frame being substantially the width of `a panel and the length being such as to permit the introduction and removal f wall panel liner units and the positioningl thereof in relation to their respective panels, and a closure for said opening detachably secured to said frame.
11. In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal compartment end members, sheet metal side wall panels ilxedly secured to said compartment end members, there being at least one less of said side wall panels than there are sides to the barrel, and a complemental wall panel comprising a frame disposed with its inner longitudinal edges substantially flush with the adjacent edges of adjacent side wall panels to project outwardly from such edges and flxedly secured thereto and to said compartment end members, the width and length of the opening of said frame being such as to permit the introductionand removal of panel liner units through the opening, and a closure for said opening provided with a liner.

In a tumbling barrel, the combination of polygonal metal compartment end members, polygonal sheet metal side panels welded to isaid end members, there being one less side panel than there are sides to the barrel, and a complemental wall panel comprising a frame disposed with its inner longitudinal edges substantially flush with y, the adjacent edges of the adjacent sidewall polygonal sheet metal side panels welded to said end members, one of said side panels comprising a frame disposed with its inner longitudinal edges substantially flush with the adjacent edges of than there are sides to the barrel, and a comple'` the 'adjacent side panels to project outwardly from such edges and welded thereto, and a side panel plate detachably secured to said frame,

15. In a tumbling barrel, a polygonal metal y compartment comprising polygonal end members,
polygonal sheet metal side panels permanently joined to said end members, one of said side panels comprising a frame disposed with its inner longitudinal edges substantially flush with the adjacent edges of the adjacent side wall panels to project outwardly from said edges, the frame and saidedges being permanently secured together, and a removable panel plate detachably secured to said frame, the width of the opening oi said frame being at least equal to the width of a panel and the length being such as to permit the introduction of wall panel liner units and the positioning thereof in relation to their respective panels, and another of said side panels directly opposite the ilrst named panel comprising a door supporting panel having a door opening therein whereby liner units can be pushed out through the opening of said frame by a. tool inserted in the door opening.

In a tumbling barrel, a polygonal metal compartment comprising polygonal end members, polygonal sheet metal'side panels permanently joined to said end members, one of said side panels comprising a frame disposed with its inner longitudinal edges substantially ush with the adjacent edges of the adjacent side wall panels to project outwardly from said edges, the frame and side edges being permanently secured together, and a removable panel plate detachably secured to said frame, the width of the opening of said frame being at least equal to the width of a panel and the length being such as to permit the introduction of wall panel liner units and the positioning thereof in relation to their respective panels, and another of said side panels directly opposite the ilrst named panel comprising a door supporting pane1 having a door opening therein, the adjacent panels to said door panel -having door mounting brackets thereon.
