restrictions placed -thereon because of war conditions,-it is absolutely impossible to have any of the common alloys, heretofore used in making vanity boxes, allotted to the construction @of such devices, and :it ,is ,an object "of this invention to make a vanity :box in which not ,a single part employed is of almetallic character,-and .the design of the vbonds such-as to lend ithe construetion of the s,ame to the use of wooden materials or ;.plastic {materials tor a c ombin, ajti on of both.
,One :object of my invention is 5110 :so design ;a yanity box that the main ,parts of the box, :such as the cover and the body may ,be constructed from longitudinal strips 'of material in the form of a molding such as canibe oonvenientl made :of wooden material and which parts may be a cut off in sectionsirom themolding in accordance awiththe predetermined size not the box. Fig. 2 is -a plan view of the "box showing the cover in closed position with portions broken away to show detail construction.
,Fig. 3jisa front end view of the same.

13 1s. .5 is a similar view toFig. dexcept showing a fragmentary portion of the cover as it-appears in open position.
Referring nowto the drawing in which like numerals designate like parts throughout theseveral views, the numeral 10 designates generally the body member and the numeralai .l the cover member. The body Ml has a base portion 12 that is so designedlas to be made Iroma stripiofmolding material, the latter being providedwith various formations to subserve the mechanics .revquired for the box. Specifically the front edge of the base 12 is provided with a longitudinal rounded beaded portion is extending the .full length of the base and terminating ;at .its upper surface in-a longitudinal upstandin lip or flange d with-a relatively narrow flat plane 1-5 provided between the lip is and the rounded-portion of the bead 13. The bead i3 is designated to vbe about half the total thickness of the box.
The rear end of the base is formed with an upstanding longitudinal rib l5 alsoextendingthe full length of the base and which-rib is removed vaidistance from the rounded'end H constituting the rear edge of the body and providing vfor a platform or flat surface a! 8 between the rounded end H -and the rib lfi. The-platform J8 ,is pref erably on a plane slightly-elevatedabove the top surface 42a of the base 12 for reasons ,as will To the opposite transverse edges of the base 12 are-secured end walls 19 identical in construction-and may be secured in place by wooden .pins (notshown) .or glue or a combination of both. The end walls 19 when attached :to the base [2 constitute the complete body lid.
The cover member 1 I, as already pointed out,
:is :also designed to be fabricated froma-strip of ,moldingmaterial and out we length equalto the length of the base l2 of the :body member H). The molding material is so formed thattthecover member :will provide fora relatively large bead at extending the full length of the cover ,at-the rear end thereof and depending a considerable distance-below the inner surface 1|: lwof the cover member. The rear head 20 is adapted to have its opposite ends hingedly connected to theend walls IS as-by wooden hinge pins 2! inia manner as shownin the sectionalized portion of Fig. 2. The hinginglbead Z IJ -isadapted to operate within ran angular recess defined by the platform Band ithe adjacent surface of the rib it as best shown in Figsn iandfi. 'I hecover member It! when in closed position is designed and proportioned so thatitsouter surface will lie flush with the upper ed es of the bodyend walls IS.
.The f iontedge of the cover member H is.also
provided with a rounded bead 22 extending the full length of the cover and depending below the inner cover surface I Ia a distance somewhat less than the rear bead 2G and is joined into a relatively narrow platform 23 disposed in a plane slightly above the inner cover surface Ho. The front cover bead 22 similar to the front base bead I3 is designed to be about half the thickness of the total box height, and when the two front beads I3 and 22 are brought together, when the cover is in closed position and by reason of their rounded contour, they provide for a general V- shaped recess 24 disposed at the mid-portion of the front edge of the box and extending substantially the full length of the box. This V-shaped recess serves as a convenient means for receiving the thumb of the operator anywhere along the front edge of the box for purposes of opening the cover. It is also to be noted that, when the cover is in closed position as shown in Fig. 4, the dependent surface of the bead 22 is adapted to rest upon the flat plate I5 of the front base bead I3 and the narrow platform 23 of the cover is adapted to rest upon the upper adjacent surface of the longitudinal lip I 4, thus providing for two contiguous engaging surfaces at the front end of the box that serves to provide for a good sealing connection at the front closing edges of the cover and body members to prevent any leakage of the powdered cosmetic material.
Within the inner surface IIa of the cover is formed a recess 25 of relatively slight depth extending throughout the entire length of the cover and into which is fitted a mirror 26 that may be permanently secured into place by a film of glue disposed between the rear surface of the mirror and the base of the recess 25. The recess 25 serves to properly position the mirror 26 relative to the cover I I and prevent it from sliding during the gluing operation.
In designing this box it is my intention to arrange a suitable stop for the cover when in open position so that the mirror will be disposed at the most convenient angle for the user.
location of the rear cover bead 20 a fiat edge 21 at the rear end of the cover is provided for of substantial width and in opening the cover this rear edge 21 is adapted to engage against the platform I8 of the base I2 at a point substantially where it joins into the rounded rear base edge I! in such a manner that the cover will be disposed at an obtuse angle relative to the plane of the body for the above pointed out reason.
Obviously the open angular position of the cover ,1
can be varied by merely changing the location of the body platform I8 relative to the outside surface of the body in the fabrication of the molded strip for the base.
In order to assure that the cover will be maintained in a closed position, provision is made for a pair of cylindrical felt washers 28 disposed in suitable sockets 29 provided in the opposite transverse edges of the front cover bead 22 in the manner as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The felt washer is adapted to frictionally engage the adjacent surfaces of the end walls I9 and frictionally maintain the cover in a closed position. The subject matter of this frictional felt washer is more completely described and claimed in the patent to Robert L. McKnight, No. 2,349,802.
It has been considered unnecessary to show how the cosmetic materials and holding members are to be fitted into the hollow portion of the body, as it is considered that any desired ar- To this end it will be noted that by reason of the size and rangement can be provided for by fitting partitions therein to make it either a single or a double box or any other arrangement that may suit the particular needs of the manufacturer who will fill the box to meet his own particular needs and fancies.
While the form of the invention herewith shown and described embraces a preferred embodiment of the same, it is to be understood that the construction may be varied as to mechanical details without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope Of what is claimed.
I claim:
