Description

OOOOOOOO SEL VVVV eeeeeeeeeeee d.
Patented March 29,1881.
i* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD SELVAGE, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO RUFUS WATERHOUSE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NECKTIE-SHIELD.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,347, dated March 291, 1881.
Application filed February 1, 1881.
To all whomI it may ooncern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD SELVAGE, of the city of Brooklyn,` in the county of Kings and State of New York, am the inventor of an Improved N ecktie-Shield, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
` edges thereof-whereby the flexibilityflatwise laterally of the shield, and at the same time its rigidity and Stiffness edgewise vertically, are increased, as hereinafter at length described.
Figure l is a face view of a ncoktie-shield embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a top edge view of the same.
In fabricating myimproved shield, l take a sheetof metal, card-board, heavy cloth, or such other similar material as is adapted for the purpose, and which has been given the proper and desired Outline for the shield, and 1 corrugate or flute the same either throughout its entire extent, as shown in the drawings, or for only a portion of its extent-say, for instanc'e, that portion midway between the ends or wings of the shield.
flutes so that the lines or axes thereof are vertical of the shield-that is to say, so that they extend in direction between the upper and lower edges of the shield as shown in Fig. This corrugating or fluting maybe done by means of suitably-constructed rolls, between I form these corrugatious or (No model.)
which the material of the shield is passed, or by any of the known Ways of producing these forms.
The shield may be covered on its front side by a strip of the material which is to constitute the stuff of the tie or scarf before the fluting or corrugating is done, if desire-d, and when stiif cloth or card-board is used the materi-al may be oaused to adhere thereto by glue, paste, or other suitable adhesive substanoe. If the material is secured to the shield after the shield is fluted, it should be allowed to lie somewhat loosely on the front of the shield, so that the fiatwise flexibility of the shield will not be thercby obstruoted.
It is evident that a shield thus formed With corrugations or flutes throughout the entire or a portion of its eXteut, and with the lines or axcs thereof Vertical of the shield, will have its flexibility flatwise laterally, and its rigidity edgewise vertically, increased, both of which results are exceedingly desirable.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture,| a necktie or scarf shield of stifi' material corrugated or fluted throughout the entire or aportion of its exteut, the lines or axes of said oorrugations i or flutes being vertical-that is to say, extending in direction between the upper and lower edges thereof as and for the pnrpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of January, A. D. 1881.
HOWARD SE LVAGE.
In presence of-- A. G. N. VERMILYE, HENRY EIDLING.
